VR Fashion Shows: Latest Advances in Virtual Reality

0

Last 2009, Alexander McQueen collaborated with Nick Knight to showcase his collection in the first-ever (by some accounts) livestream show.

This innovation changed the way we look at the fashion show forever. With the latest advent in technology — virtual reality fashion shows — designers are looking for ways to incorporate these advancements to their show, to improve the experience for their fans. Today, an increasing number of fashion brands are using virtual reality that provides a unique and special ways to look into the services, products and runways shows. Augmented reality offers a closer look, personal experience and intimate access in the industry.

Virtual Reality: The Future of Fashion Shows?

In the fashion industry, technological innovation presents a new and interesting approach to entice new buyers. Imagine a show where you will never have to deal with the stressful traffic, late models and unnecessary talks; or perhaps, you are looking for ways to just skip the horrible collection and just move to the better stuff. Imagine all of that happening at the comfort of your home. You will have the best seat in the fashion shows while sitting comfortably at your armchair.

With augmented reality, the location of the fashion shoot can change invariably. They will simply shoot the entire show using the green screen at the backdrop, and they can easily alter the location once they placed it at the VR set-up. They can make the models appear like they are walking on the glaciers, through a narrow platform at the space station or perhaps at a secluded location at the Amazon jungle.

Using augmented reality allows you to shot the entire event in 360-degrees which means that everyone who has an access to the fashion show using the headset can have a premium pass and an exclusive access to the Behind-the-scene footages. VR is still in its stage of development, but as this medium evolves, more innovation and features should be expected that will raise the fashion shows into new heights. The true potential of this technology is yet to be uncovered, but as of today, it allows us to watch the things that are beyond the usual runway.

Virtual reality has also invaded the New York’s Fashion week as several designers have hoped to boost the consumer experience of the attendees by offering their brands using the VR technology. The public was able to have an access to the 13 collection using their gadgets in 2D. It has been a revolutionary opportunity for the fashion industry. By using this latest technology, they made it possible for the thousands of individuals to have the best seat. The increase in the visibility and the awareness in the part of the designer are just immense.

As the fashion industry starts to use the VR technology, most designers are looking forward to the vast opportunities that will lead to better capabilities and enhanced customer experience. Since you are not basically restricted to the laws of science in augmented reality, this can change the way designers create and present their clothes.

Differences Between Paris and New York Fashion Weeks

0

No doubt, NYFW is a significant fashion event, where the best designers get to show their new ideas and garments, while new fashion trends can be “tried on” (so to speak). However, the monthlong fashion extravaganza known as “fashion month” actually begins in New York and finishes in Paris.

It’s a favorite pastime of fashionistas to compare New York Fashion Week with Paris Fashion Week, in order say which has the highest influence on fashion trends.

New York Fashion Week has the largest number of shows, and, on the whole, is a showcase for a more minimal American aesthetic. Paris, on the other hand, is home to some of the world’s largest and more storied brands, from Chanel to Dior to Saint Laurent … and way beyond.

NYFW

New York was the first city to initiate a fashion week in 1943. And it’s definitely an important center of fashion today, as many designers choose New York as a launchpad for their new collections. And except for Paris, it attracts the most journalists and media attention.

During New York, media coverage is huge, and the brands presented are numerous. Celebrities from all over the world visit to get their picture snapped front row. New York Fashion Week is, simply put, a big marketplace, and event to be “seen” at.

Paris Fashion Week

Every fashionista’s dream is to visit Paris during fashion week, at least once in their lives. Paris still honors the traditional forms and Parisian haute couture sensibility, even in its ready to wear. This makes Paris the capital of fashion, where a buyer may find the finest garments, by the most important fashion designers and houses.

Paris paves the way for all the important deals. That’s why all serious media professionals and buyers visit it every year. The world’s fashion industry depends on Paris Fashion Week. Though it is the last event chronologically, there is no doubt that Paris still holds the key to fashion trade. Every respected buyer will come to Paris to take a look at new ideas and place orders from the most prestigious fashion designers.

So, Which is “Bigger?”

Ultimately, this is probably a useless question. In number of raw shows, NYFW edges PFW out (although not by much). In terms of “big names,” Paris takes an indisputable lead (in fact, it’s second only to Milan for household name designers). In terms of emerging designers, the win goes to New York.

A hierarchical look at life tends to be reductive, at best, so it’s best to leave the matter at that. No matter how you look at it, NY and Paris Fashion Week bookend the world’s biggest fashion gathering. More importantly, in that monthlong span, a vast number of designers find the chance to promote their work.

Best of all, both add just a little bit of glamour to everyday life.

Sometimes you really can’t ask for more than that.

Celebrating Age: The New World Order

0

Old Guard, New Icons

iris-apfel-mainFor seemingly as long as any of us can remember, we’ve been taught to combat age (“defy it!”), not celebrate it. It’s a curious phenomenon is a world where everyone — read that again, please: everyone — can only get older. It’s also a proposition that’s a little insane: akin to asking someone to hold their breath indefinitely. The mind boggles at how much unhappiness, misery even, this simple idea — of feeling somehow shamed between the ages of 18 and 99 (roughly 80% of our lives) — has created. But good news is here: we may all soon be able to breathe a sigh of collective relief.

The mind boggles at how much unhappiness the idea of perpetual youth has created.

Along with a host of other aged-and-proud fashionistas, a new wave of style influencers has attracted the spotlight in the last decade. One scroll through Instagram’s fashion and beauty feed or a single glance at the beauty bloggers or vloggers is enough to understand the amount of young, pretty faces saturating the fashion world.

There seems to be a uniform “look” dominating our computer and phone screens: porcelain skin, flawless makeup, and unbelievable bodies. It is the age of Kardashian-esqe perfection; one look at Kendall Jenner and the age-old mantra of accepting one’s age as it is doesn’t seem to suffice. Of course, there are exceptions to this formula for online fame; but it still seems to be the overarching attitude.

There seems to be a uniform “look” dominating our computer and phone screens.

Among these exceptions are some fabulous femmes over forty. After Iris Apfel’s successful documentary, Iris, aired on Netflix, her popularity soared, even gaining her an exposition in Le Bon Marché in Paris. In her documentary, she stresses again and again her love for originality and eccentricity, turning from the uniformity of many new-age fashion influencers.

After Iris Apfel’s successful documentary, Iris, aired on Netflix, her popularity soared.

In fact, she rejects the obsession with beautiful things, on account of their transience, saying: “I never felt pretty; I don’t feel pretty now. I am not a pretty person. I don’t like pretty, so I don’t feel bad. And I think it worked out well because I found that for instance all the girls that I know, pretty girls, that got by on their looks — as time passed by and they faded, they had nothing.”

Of course, no one should be shamed for their natural-born beauty; quite the contrary! What Iris is getting at, and what many others have been getting at, is that there is a lack of appreciation for creatives with something to offer beyond a fresh and profitable ten years of youth.

Advanced Style on Netflix

Also on Netflix — and perhaps the harbinger of a new trend of such films — Advanced Style reflects on the carefree wisdom of older fashionistas. Far from caring about the masses and their collective opinion, these women seem to have mastered how to live stylishly and happily. In fact, they’ve compiled them on a convenient blog.

Advanced Style reflects on the carefree wisdom of older fashionistas.

lyn-slaterMeanwhile, Lyn Slater — the Accidental Icon — runs an Instagram account, a Facebook page, a Twitter, a Tumblr — you name it — just as well, if not better, than the millennials who dominate the platforms. With a crisp, classic, and absolutely enviable style, her blog features well-written and introspective posts paired with, frankly, iconic photos in muted urban environments.

Lyn Slater — the Accidental Icon — runs an Instagram account, a Facebook page, a Twitter, a Tumblr

giampaolo_alliataCertainly, older women are beginning to shake the fashion world, but their male counterparts would be remiss if they were left behind. Enter Giampaolo Alliata, Italian Instagram personality. With a considerable following, Alliata shares his clean-cut taste in photos that feature a refreshing smile more often than not.

Frank Muytjens, head of menswear design at J. Crew, records a more relaxed look on his Instagram feed, along with the contents of his home, environment, and even his cheery pup. He is the city slicker with a sense of style, without the aftertaste of gentrification.

Frank Muytjens As much as we all hate to admit it, our parents are usually right. The same goes for the older generation of fashion: they’re usually right. Sure, the younger generation brings new ideas, concepts, and attitudes to the fashion industry, but it hardly means that older stylists should be excluded from the dialogue.

Welcome to the New World Order.

With any luck, it’ll soon be a nicer, safer place for all of us.

Will VR Replace Traditional Fashion Shows?

0

As of 2016, the fashion show industry was supposed to be dominated by virtual reality.

Before the VR industry came in, many people were predicting that film fashion shows would eliminate the expensive runways and catwalks but to their surprise, catwalks and runways are still dominating almost every fashion show. Many tech giants have invested heavily in virtual reality devices like Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear, and Google Daydream so as to enhance the effectiveness of the fashion shows but the demand of these devices are still very low. In 2016 surveys, it was revealed that 55 percent of fashion show fans wanted to buy virtual reality devices, but only 24 percent of the fashion show organizers were ready to invest on virtual reality.

Good Reviews from Users

For the few people who had the privilege of testing the virtual reality devices, they gave positive reviews about them. Besides the extraordinary emotional enrichment on fashion collections that virtual reality devices gave to people, they were also cheap and affordable, an example being the Google Cardboard. Ideally speaking, the technology of vr is great but what is lacking is the consumer engagement and usefulness to the new inventions. If VR has to predominate the fashion industry, then a lot of brands should embrace and utilize it so that people can get used to it.

The Effectiveness Behind Virtual Reality

Fashion is based on emotions and experiences, if the fashion style yields an exceptional feeling to the customers, then it would definitely be chosen by many people. Virtual reality can create that feeling and emotion even though the brand itself might not be up to the standards. Virtual reality creates the environment, circumstance, and feeling where the customer is not there in reality, but he or she wants to be there. A good example is when virgin holidays made their customers to enjoy destinations using virtual reality. It brought windfall earnings because many customers stayed in those destinations for long.

John Lewis was also able to get a lot of clients when he used virtual reality to do his house remodeling work. A lot of people liked, it and he started getting endless contracts since people wanted to get something different and unique. If the fashion collection stores and shows can embrace virtual reality and make people use it in large numbers and frequently, then VR is definitely going to dominate the fashion industry.

The Bottom Line

As it stands, customers are ready to use the technology of virtual reality, but very few people are ready to stream their fashion shows in virtual reality technology. This is what is making the runways and catwalks to be predominant everywhere. Fashion shows have been using VR and 360 degrees videos. An example being the New York Fashion week which used Intel as there technology partner to stream their show using virtual reality. Mercedes Benz fashion week used the YouVist to stream their show in virtual reality technology from preparation to front and backstage. There is a dilemma on the fashion show organizers, whether to stay traditional or go for virtual reality technology. But by the look of the situation, virtual reality is far away from eliminating traditional fashion shows.

What Are Resort Fashion Shows And When Do They Occur?

There are an increasing number of fashion weeks around the world. One of the most confusing parts of fashion shows for shoppers is the dates of the various weeks and why stores start selling the next season’s items in the middle of the current season.

What Are Swim / Resort Shows?

The term “resort” comes from its origins in Old French, to “go out again,” as resort collections were designed for people who were going to be traveling to warm areas to escape colder climes. While the rise of Internet shopping has made buying seasonal clothing easier, many brands still have resort fashion shows. In fact, they’re becoming more popular as awareness of fashion week itself grows.

Today, resort fashion shows are not really about showing lines that are meant to be taken traveling. However, there a few lines that still create collections with that goal in mind. Instead, most fashion brands use resort fashion weeks to show their “pre-collections.” These collections are very important for fashion brands because most pieces in a pre-collection are designed to be more wearable pieces — as in the case of Louis Vuitton using similar embellishments on a dress for autumn/winter and an oversized sweater in the resort line. There are many other examples of this, and you can easily see the continuing patterns, especially if you compare a fashion week show to a resort show.

“Pre-collections” are also meant to bridge the gap between the time fall/winter clothes go on sale, and before spring lines are fully released. This is why you will see a mixture of heavy and light fabrics and different cuts and styles in these fashion shows. These are also the collections that are available for sale the longest amount of time, due to the release dates.

When Do Resort Fashion Shows Take Place?

Resort fashion shows are on a different schedule than other fashion weeks. Most times, the fall/winter fashion weeks take place in February and March, and September is the home of the spring/summer fashion weeks.

Most brands host their resort fashion shows during summer. However, we are seeing more brands having two resort fashions show a year. The time period of November to January is becoming the other popular time to show resort wear and other “pre-collections.” The release date of most resort lines is around mid-November, but this date may change depending on the store and the brand.

Resort fashion was originally intended to showcase clothing that you would take on vacation. This is why resort fashion shows have different dates from many fashion weeks. These fashion shows can include everything from sneak peeks of the spring/summer lines and swimsuits to heavier spring clothing. Over the years, resort and swim fashion shows have become more about bridging the gap between fall/winter and spring/summer.

Brands to Watch at Miami Swim Week

What brands should you watch out for at Miami Swim Week? Here are just a few:

Jade Swim

This swim label was launched by Marie Claire’s senior fashion market editor, Brittany Kozerski. She included simple pieces that focused on the silhouette. The pieces also included fabric that shapes the body in order to smooth out any imperfections. Brittany admitted that she took on the project during a very busy season, but she noted that there is no time like the present.

Monica Hansen Beachwear

As a former model, Monica also broke into the scene with her collection as a newbie. Her focus was on the 1970s hippies movement and on pieces were made in Italy.

For Love and Lemons

This is another brand to look out for at Miami Swim Week. With a vast use of bridal and neutral undertones, For Love and Lemons also maximizes on beautiful one-pieces with high cuts, cutouts, and lace.

Malia Jones Collection<

The Metallic Moment wowed through its use of simple yet subtle metallics and structured styles. The ability to turn something that people would shy away from into something that people fall over themselves to buy is a gift. That is why Malia Jones in such a force to be reckoned with.

Ward Whillas

Ward Whillas once again stunned with reversible swimwear that is both functional and fun recommended you read. The line came in with new impressive cuts that set a trend for swimwear lovers. With this kind of reputation, Ward Whillas is one to watch this upcoming Swim Week.

The event was started in conjunction with the Florida Sports Magazine. The event became a success and it was continued till 1998 successfully. However, the event stopped after 1998 and was restored by 2005. Miami Sports International, which is a subsidiary of the Swim Gym Aquatics, played a major role behind restoring the event. This organization was led by the fourth year captain of the University of Florida Swimming Team, Jonathan Strauss.

Parties and Shows of Last Miami Swim Week

0

Life’s a Beach at Swim Week

During Miami Swim Week, a large number of parties and shows are organized throughout South Beach. They offer an amazing experience to guests, and there’s something for everyone to take part and enjoy. Here’s a brief overview of some of the parties and shows that were held at last Miami Swim Week.

Of all the parties organized at last Swim Week, MIAMI Magazine’s 8th-Annual SPLASHION received some of the most attention. In this party, Uncle Luke and Yes Julz teamed up to host one of the most-attended parties at Swim Week. It was an invite-only party, but a decent crowd came out to enjoy every moment of the event.

The Lazy Sunday BBQ was another popular party, which was celebrated by people at last year’s Miami Swim Week. It was held at the 40 Island Avenue in Miami Beach. This was an ideal event for individuals who were looking forward to taking part in a more relaxed party. People who attended this party also got the opportunity to explore the luxury of the Miami Beach Hotel.

The Beach Bunny Swimwear afterparty with Voco was held on Washington Avenue. To purchase an entrance ticket to this party, people had to pay between $20 and $40. This was the official party organized by Beach Bunny, and it happens every year. A few celebrities even turned up to enjoy a bottle or two.

The Aloha! Sunset Party was another impressive event held at the last year’s Miami Swim Week. This party was held in the last day of Miami Swim Week. As a result, a large number of guests turned up. The sunset party was dedicated to individuals who have been struggling with a bikini diet for the past few weeks. It’s the last day of Swim Week, so they can eat anything they like. In other words, the guests will not have to worry about anything until they turn up at Swim Week 2018. For an entrance ticket of $45, people were provided with access to the all-you-can-eat section. This section included charred pineapple salads, roasted pigs, and many other food items, which can make the guests feel both proud and bloated. Seating arrangements were organized alongside the pool.

The Swim Miami Kickoff party was another fête held at last year’s event. It was hosted along with the assistance of Vikina Lopez and Kent Jones. This was an RSVP via email event, which was held on South Beach’s Collins Avenue. People who attended got the opportunity to rub elbows with the Swim Week elite.

Apart from the resort and swim looks in evidence, it was filled with music for guests to enjoy. Vikina Lopez kept the crowd alive throughout the party as well.

For more information on this upcoming July’s events, stay tuned!

Life’s a Beach: Pop-Up Shops During Miami Swim Week

Life’s a Beach: Pop-Up Shops During Miami Swim Week

Miami Swim Week is the largest swimwear show in the world. People from around the world take a trip to Miami Beach, not just to watch the runway shows or to get some sun, but to visit the pop-up shops of designers and fashion houses at the shows. Since Miami Swim Week is also a trade show, you can find amazing deals if you are willing to look closely. Here are some areas that offer pop-up shops where you can shop.

Funkshion

Funkshion is the longest running event in Miami Swim Week, which started in 2003. In the past, Funkshion was the only runway tent that was on South Beach. However, Swim Miami also had a tent on South Beach in 2016. Funkshion is still the largest tent show with two runways, a lounge, and a KYBOE pop-up shop inside. Many other pop-up shops can be found nearby since most of the events are not open to the public.

Dive

Dive is a younger show because it is only in its third year. Dive is different compared to other shows because the show is run by a former producer of Made Fashion Week in New York, which helps launch new labels and misfit brands. There are shows for both ladies and men’s wear during the Dive show. A pop-up shop carrying a variety of brands is normally open during and after the show. This makes it easy for you to buy the pieces that you saw on the runway. It should be noted that most years, the pop-up shop is only open in the afternoon and closes around 9pm.

Where to Find Pop-up Shops?

Along with the pop-up shops at the runway shows, there are some brands that host their own pop-up shops. These usually include local boutiques and fashion brands like As a Boutique, which had a pop-shop in one of the luxury hotels in Miami.

If you are looking for pop-up shops that are open to the public, your best option is to look for events and shows that are not invitation only. Most private events only allow the event guests to shop at their pop-shop, so most only have one or two shops.

Public events and areas around them will most times have large numbers of shops because they are trying to sell both their new lines and older pieces. This is where many brands get their start and make most of their money. It is common to see still photographers and fashion magazine editors at public pop-up shops, so they can find new designers who have amazing styles.

If you are planning on shopping at pop-up shops, you should make sure that you have both cash and credit cards with you. Even though some shops only take cash, many other shops now take credit cards.

Shopping at Miami Swim Week is a unique experience because you are shopping alongside fashion buyers and celebrities. Most pop-up shops at Miami Swim Week will have pieces that were shown in the runway shows along with other new pieces.

Miami Swim Week Show Registration

0

Miami Swim Week is one of the biggest and most popular shows that take place every year. Swim week is highly anticipated by lovers of swimwear and other industry bigwigs. This is because the event provides the basis for summer’s trends. Like every other fashion week, it provides designers with the opportunity to showcase their newest ideas and designs on the runway in a bid to introduce or reintroduce trends to the world of swimwear.

How Do You Register?

Miami Swim Week registration is open to buyers, vendors and the press. To register for the event, visit the official website and fill in your details on the spaces provided. After you have confirmed that the information you filled is correct, go ahead and submit it. This year’s show is supposed to take place in June and registering early is important. Some of the benefits of early registration include:

Securing a Slot

Attendance is never guaranteed. You may want to cover swim week as a member of the press, but if you register late, you may not get a pot. You may also want to set up a stand to sell your wares but end up missing space because you registered late. If you sign up early enough, the event organizers are able to secure a place for you in good time. Miami Swim Week is one of the most popular swimwear events in the world, and it happens once a year. It attracts many attendees including the who’s who in the industry. Securing a spot early enough will save you from the hassle of trying to find a place last minute. This helps them with organization of the event to have a more fluid and seamless event.

Runway Shows

Runway shows are not guaranteed. There are very specific high profile brands that get to showcase their designs. The only way to get to showcase your designs on the runway is to register early in advance and follow up with the organizers to find out if you could feature some of your wares on the runway.

For Personal Planning

Once you register, you will be compelled to block out the dates of the event and slot everything else around those dates. This will help you to organize your schedule and deny you the chance to flake out of going to the event, especially if there are no high stakes for you. If you are a vendor, you get to organize your models, staff, and vendors and prepare them for the big event. Late registration poses the threat of being unable to attend swim week, and so no one would proceed with organizing their showcase without having registered. It is only logical.

Miami Swim Week is a big deal for gurus in the fashion industry, specifically those who are more invested in swimwear. In order to attend one has to register. The good thing about the registration process is that it is online and does not require a lot from you. It is, therefore, advisable to register early enough if you would like to attend swim week as a vendor or a buyer.
