Perry Ellis NYFW FW18

Iconic American designer Perry Ellis presented its Fall/Winter 2018 collection during New York Fashion Week on Tuesday evening.

The runway show also heralded its new platform and Spring campaign ‘Life Ready Since 1976,’ which harkens back to the brand’s heritage and reinforces the idea of anywhere dressing, an important part of the Perry Ellis ethos.

The Hippodrome NYC, once the site of a circus and other public gatherings, served as the backdrop for the Perry Ellis Fall/Winter 2018 runway show. The rich, festive history of the location and the depiction of a “Circus Sideshow” by George Seurat began a deep fascination with a modern take on pointillism. From the stage production of “Sunday in the Park With George”, based on a fictionalized version of Seurat, the collection derives a rich color palette and crosses over into the exploration of versatility of sportswear and fabric usage.

Creative Director, Michael Maccari, loosened up the styling of the collection to reflect go-forward daily needs of the Perry Ellis man preparing him to go at the day in a variety of ways. The collection featured printed anoraks, puffers and vests that layer over total stretch trousers and other functional pieces.

Color blocks and hand painted landscapes mix with complicated jacquards providing depth to non-solid weaves. The use of color serves to provide the connection between work and play. Graphic statements nod to the seasonal direction and are in every case ON POINT. The canvas is prepared and the foundation has been laid for a season based on design, order, harmony, balance and composition.

Notables including in attendance included: 21 Savage, Marc E. Bassy, Danell Leyva, Elijah Boothe, Steven Kolb, Pico Alexander and more. Drag performer contestant Daniel ‘Milk’ Donigan walked in the show.

Grooming was provided by Aveda.

What You Absolutely Need to Get You Through Fashion Week

0

Fashion Week Essentials

One of the most frequently asked questions I get is “how do you get through fashion week?”

It may seem very glamorous from all the street style shots in my Manolo Blahniks and Instagram stories in the front row. But it takes months of preparation and many seasons to understand the system. So I am going to give you an insight into the ABSOLUTE essentials that get me through fashion week.

You are going to need some statement pieces. You need to give the photographers swarming the streets a reason to want to shoot you, and good looks aren’t going to be enough. We love these statement pearl earrings from Elizabeth Cole, her designs frequently seen on Katy Perry. You can always expect crazy cold temps and a blizzard during February fashion week in New York.

Your solution is this warm WANTED faux fur scarf. Even the trendiest girl needs a pair of classic Manolo Blahnik heels for fashion week. I personally cannot live without these especially during fashion week. If you haven’t heard that scrunchies  are going to be one of the biggest hair trends this year then you are already behind, this trend is one of my favorites because it saves me a good 30 minutes of precious prep time in the morning.

If you follow the chic fashion editors from all the big publications (including our own @savento_) you’d know by now they are all raving about a few things.

1) These Adam Selman x Le Specs glasses that are an absolute necessity

2) Vintner’s Daughters Active Botanical Serum that you literally have to try for yourself to see just why every single blogger and editor swears by it.

Beauty trends always originate from Fashion Week, and from the work of Pat McGrath. Her lipsticks and new palette are the hottest beauty launches of 2018 yet. You are going to want these handy during fashion week as Pat shows you which colors and products she is using on the runways looks via Instagram.

Fresh glowing skin is easy to maintain during this high-stress week with these miracle products. To avoid any unwanted bumps or acne we always keep Juice Beauty’s Blemish Clearing Powder and  Blemish Be Gone Stick. I keep Glossier’s soothing face mist and Coconut Balm Dotcom  in my bag so that I can quickly refresh my face and lips after a couple hours of shows. A year round hero of mine that takes the cake for my favorite night cream ever is Goop’s Replenishing Night Cream. This powerful little cream gives me an overnight facial that melts away all the stress, puffiness and dullness in my face. Combine that with Juice Beauty’s Stem Cellular Instant Eye Lift Algae Mask and you’d never know if I had 10 hours or 4 hours of sleep!

Mornings are filled with coffee and espresso, nights are filled with wine and champagne. To keep my smile photo-ready I keep Go-Smiles tiny little teeth stain erasers on me at all times. Nothing is worse than having stained teeth when you see photos pop up the next day.

You cannot overlook your health during fashion week. The only time I have to eat or sit is usually as I am simultaneously on my way to the next show, posting Instagrams, answering emails and trying to take notes on what we just saw at the last show. No-fuss healthy and filling protein bars like these RXBars are always in hand, bonus points for their aesthetically pleasing packaging that you wouldn’t hate to be photographed holding. Another thing I am always drinking during shows is Dirty Lemon DrinksFor a hydrated and elastic skin I drink one of the skin+hair collagen bottles. I am a sucker for anything matcha, and their matcha bottles are filled with antioxidants that elevate metabolism and help burn extra fat during the day.

Stick with these essentials and I promise you, your fashion week will be 10 times more enjoyable. Just like in life, its the little things that count. Like having not one, but three amazingly chic portable chargers that will not only save you in times of a crisis, but may even make a stranger with a dying phone a life-long friend. (true story, this has actually happened to me!)

Diplomacy makes clothes to live by, clothes with meaning behind the threads. It is our desire to remind the world of the long-lost art of diplomacy, to champion the practice of thoughtfulness, tact, and civility that is the ethos behind our brand.

The panda in our logo symbolizes friendship, peace, and strength. Its eyepatch conveys individuality, confidence — the boldness to live by your own rules.

Indeed, the highest form of dignity is not in what we say, it is in how we live.

Private Policy Fall Winter 2018: New York Fashion Week Men’s

Private Policy NYFW FW18

Represented by Agentry PR.

During a time when few people defied Hitler, Charlie Chaplin created the cinematic spear, “The Great Dictator,” to mock the most powerful man on earth. Prior to the outbreak of WWII, Hitler’s Nazi ideals were not heavily criticized in the United States. Instead, he garnered support, to a point where Jews in America avoided the subject in conversation to avert conflict.

Chaplin could not hold back his faith in freedom, justice and humanity. He made a film to expose the dictator, not only of his evil and cruelty, but also the ridiculousness and self-righteousness he attributed. Utilizing Chaplin’s skilled understanding and usage of comedy and filmmaking, he created a Hollywood masterpiece and a wake up call for humanity.

“Today we ask ourselves, how do we prevent another rise of a dictator? Maybe the answer is in the pursuit of knowledge and truth so we will not be fooled; maybe in the embrace of individuality and equality.

“PRIVATE POLICY has dedicated our FW18 collection to the bravery of Charlie Chaplin. We also want to stand up for what is right. Anti nuclear weapon, Anti dictatorship, Anti ignorance!

“We mix military uniform with the NEW YORK youth iconic silhouettes and fabrication. Once again, we want to dress up our fellow revolutionaries to be empowered to fight for our faith in Love and Equality!”

Descendant of Thieves Fall Winter 2018: New York Fashion Week Men’s

0

Descendant of Thieves NYFW FW18

Represented by Atelier PR.

We were inspired by the traditional yet controversial English Fox Hunt,” said Matteo Maniatty, Descendant of Thieves’ Creative Director and Co-Founder.

“We considered the fox hunt’s strict clothing etiquette when building the collection into 3 distinct and competing teams. However, there is a twist on the interpretation of the hunt. Our version of a fox is someone who is handsome, chic, and a distinctive dandy. By inverting the idea of the fox hunt, we also modified the definition of the ‘kill.’

“In this case, the audience, editors, influencers, and photographers actually become the hunter with the intention of nailing that ‘killer shot.’ The objective of the game remains constant with the ultimate goal of capturing the fox.”

Hendamy: Bringing Egyptian Jewelry to the World

0

Interview with Hanan Ibrahim

Hanan Ibrahim never intended to become a champion for the time-honored craft of Egyptian jewelrymaking. But with Hendamy, that’s exactly what she’s done: create an opportunity for Egyptian artisans to become known to a global audience.

Her journey from fashionista to businessperson is fascinating, and we were delighted to be able to speak with her about her adventure for Fashion Week Online. You can find out more, and shop Egyptian designers, at Hendamy.com.

Egyptian Artifacts

[portfolio_slideshow id=48774 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Q: How did Hendamy begin? What is its genesis? Who founded it, when, and why?

Ever since I was young, I had a passion for handmade jewelry and it just stayed with me. I love collecting unique jewelry pieces whenever I can. Ever since I moved to the US I haven’t been able to fulfill this passion; I couldn’t find handmade jewelry pieces that I could connect to and when I found something nice, it was unrealistically overpriced.

when I found something nice, it was unrealistically overpriced

On a visit to Egypt I got acquainted with several Egyptian jewelry designers and I immediately fell in love with their designs. These designers have been very successful building a reputation for themselves locally in Egypt and to me they were ready for the global challenge but needed support.

And this is when the idea behind Hendamy was born, which is creating a bridge for Egyptian jewelry designers to make their fabulous designs attainable in the US for women like me. Women who are looking for unique artisan jewelry that they can connect to without having to spend a fortune.

My name is Hanan Ibrahim, an immigrant originally from Egypt, a wifey and a mom of two amazing angles. I am a Computer Science bachelor and I’m a fashion and jewelry fanatic. With all my passion for jewelry, my computer science background as well as my beloved husband’s support, Hendamy became a reality. I believe that technology should connect us with our passion and Hendamy just did that to me and to all my customers.

I’ve been thinking about the idea since 2016. It took me about a year to perform the market research, and communicating our idea with the designers to get their support. They all loved it at once and they were very cooperative. I started my online store with only one designer brand whom I’m very grateful for her support and in several months I now carry collections from 4 jewelry designers.

It took me about a year to perform the market research

Q: What makes Egyptian jewelry unique?

Well, the history of handmade jewelry is traced back thousands of years ago and according to history, jewelry crafting started at the heart of the earliest known civilizations on earth and, in particular in Ancient Egypt, so jewelry crafting runs deep down the Egyptian DNA.

jewelry crafting runs deep down the Egyptian DNA

Throughout history and until our modern age, Egypt has been renowned for its opulent culture and profound history that has greatly influenced and inspired designers and artists not only from Egypt but also from around the globe. This amazing influence appears greatly in the Egyptian designers’ aesthetic as they marvelously incorporate the Egyptian culture, history and heritage into their contemporary, modern conceptual designs.

All of that is backed up with the astounding and prodigious talent of the Egyptian craftspeople and artisans to finally create state of the art exquisite jewelry pieces; all handmade at reasonable prices to indulge a wide range of our passionate customers.

Q: Why did you choose the name Hendamy and what does it mean?

Hendamy is Arabic for (tidy or well-groomed) … all precisely describing people who like to make a statement about what they wear — whether it is their cologne, shoes, outfit or jewelry. I think the name is very interesting and it becomes even more interesting when you know its meaning. It perfectly aligns with the concept of the store.

Q: How do you find your talented designers?

We are always scouting for new talents by extensively researching fashion events and gatherings. Good designs speak for themselves and don’t actually need effort to be found and recognized. We also get requests from new designers to join aboard Hendamy. So it’s basically a two-way process that we are excited about.

Good designs speak for themselves

Q: Your items are all ethically sourced. What does this mean to you, and why is it so important?

Ethical sourcing is a core value at Hendamy.

To handcraft a unique jewelry piece that truly reflects your inner soul, it is indispensable that it is sourced ethically. The materials have to be unadulterated and environmentally responsible. In addition to that, the jewelry piece has to be created by the hands of a passionate craftspeople, who are artists themselves. Every artisan has to have a connection and passion for the jewelry he/she is creating. It is basically adding life to sketched designs on paper.

Ethical sourcing is a core value at Hendamy

Without respecting the worker’s talent that jewelry piece won’t have life and won’t be unique. At the end of the day, the designer along with the craftspeople are creating a piece of art, and art makes the world a better place. It should never warp the universe or people.

Q: What makes jewelry purchased from your artisans unique?

The designers at Hendamy are renowned for their ingenuity. They design jewelry pieces that are contemporary, perfectly incorporating absolute functionality, uniqueness, modernity and spirituality ,in a fashionably yet timeless aesthetic concept.

All designers at Hendamy produce their jewelry pieces in limited numbers, all handmade; no jewelry piece is identical to another. It is almost like a fingerprint. There’s no mass production involved, thus adding to their value and uniqueness. The fusion of quality materials such as 925 sterling silver, precious stones, genuine leather, and other materials creates unique designs.

each piece is like a fingerprint

Q: How does Hendamy create opportunities for craftspeople and artisans? And how do you support this vanishing group of artists?

Through promoting the designer’s labels in the global fashion market, Hendamy aspires to aid with creating job opportunities for craftspeople and artisans who work really hard to build better future for their families and themselves. The designers also contribute to the community by holding workshops across the country to educate more people and provide them with hands on experience on jewelry crafting. This also aids to conserve this ancient profession that is slowly diminishing.

Hendamy aspires to create job opportunities

Jean Paul Gaultier Spring Summer 2018: Paris Fashion Week

Jean Paul Gaultier Paris Fashion Week FW18

When one thinks of the classic runway show during a time before the Instagram influencer and the obsession for quick fame, you have an experience where the product is the central subject and produces great emotion among show goers. The models appear to want to be there; a time when they were excited about their work — sometimes they even danced to show how the clothes they model move and how it made them feel.

This classic model of a fashion show of the 1980s and 1990s has been abandoned for a less stimulating and emotional display, where people show the pretension of having better things to do and not possibly caring to be present. There was something about Gaultier Paris’ S/S2018 show that had a very elegant, old-fashion-show air about it, just as when shows used to be fun and excite emotions.

Jean Paul Gaultier: Paris FW18

[portfolio_slideshow id=48852 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Considering Jean Paul Gaultier’s resume and legacy in fashion, I was so pleased to attend this season’s couture show. Never did I expect to experience such a lively presentation that would give me such profound satisfaction! Upon receiving the invitation, I knew I’d be in for the treat, with the ’60s and ’80s blended design that was featured on one side.

Never did I expect to experience such a lively presentation

The designer created a stripped effect on a variety of fabrics, particularly beautiful on leathers. It gave the fabric a new range of textures that is both exciting and fashionable. Occasionally, the collection featured very elegant and polished pieces with others that were decayed and worn out – another opportunity to mix high and low in appearance.

One of the most interesting and translatable pieces was a cape-not-cape, which I think did well in rethinking the blazer in a very couture way yet reminiscent of a ’40s classic silhouette. I adored the abrasive silk upper thigh high boot, also seen at A.F. Vandervorst and can only hope this becomes a real thing in fashion. Though inconvenient, it is gloriously fabulous.

In terms of coloring, there was a lot of black and white, with a small subset in rich royal blue, then occasionally a monochromatic look in very vibrant colors. The crowd responded well to many of the sharp elliptical shapes seen on jackets, skirts, handbags and jewelry. Some pieces also donned my seasonal favorite dramatic 1920s fringes, such as in Ralph and Russo, but here they were far less conventional and a lot more emotionally extravagant.

The crowd responded well

There were some prominent 1960s futuristic thoughts, a time when there was an expectation of producing things that were forward-thinking and new. Never boring, darling!

The most charming moment of the show came at the end, when Coco Rocha appeared dancing in a cozy number at the head of the runway and revealed her daughter hiding in her dress. The two closed the show with the most fashionable mommy and me look paired with the most adorable dance the couture world has ever seen.

Bravo, Gaultier Paris.

Musing it Over: A Look at Some Inspiration Behind New York Fashion Week

0

Inspiration on the Runway

As New York Fashion week approaches, many hot new designers will showcase their collections and visions for Fall / Winter 2018. Here is an exclusive look at some of the creative inspiration behind the looks that will be gracing the runway this season.

NYFW Inspirations

[portfolio_slideshow id=48935 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=true]

Art life

Art and fashion often go hand in hand and when it comes to beautiful paintings and sculptures this had a profound impact on Misha Kaura’s collection, “This collection was inspired by the glitter-based sculptures of Mauro Perucchetti, particularly By Prescription and Precious One. Fashion lovers can expect to see jewel-tone colored pieces that are shiny, sparkly, and ethereally feminine. Put another way, “there will be lots of sequins,” Misha Kaura explains. The fully sustainable collection proves that recycled fashion does not need to lack any sparkle.

Similarly, for his Fall Winter collection 2018 Harrison Wong found inspiration from the mid-20th Century abstract expressionist, Mark Rothko whose unique paintings featured vibrant hues and stark black and greys. Featuring an abundance of oversized sweaters and fitted overcoats in gradient tones his Fall Winter Collection combines elements of both modern classic and sportswear. With so many wearable pieces this collection is bound to catch the eye.

With its deep plum and burgundy hues and opulent fabrics, it’s clear to see that theatrical art was a strong source of inspiration for Anveglosa’s up and coming collection. The collection encourages creativity and oozes sophistication.

Throwback Thursday

There’s no denying that looking back at previous fashion trends and eras often serve as a great inspiration for designers. Vivi Zuebdi has put together a stunning collection based on not only her travels but also with a subtle nod to a previous generation, “When I saw the elderly weavers in the village in South Kalimantan, I suddenly wanted to create a collection inspired by the fashion of their time, the ’40s through ’60s. I want to make chic and stylish masterpieces with their handcrafted materials. I want this fabric to be the new trend in fashion.”

Heaven Please referenced an era of elegance and Hong Kong’s eclectic culture when putting together its collection. Inspired by DăCuòLe “Wrong Number” (a novel from Liu Yichang), the bold looks will integrate literature and a strong ’50s influence.

Nothing can be more inspirational than a strong, independent woman and it’s that notion that Dan Liu based his collection around. Even though The Spy Who Loved Me is a James Bond movie, the focus is female and on strong, feminine looks that celebrate that. Expect streamlined silhouettes, bold colours and a strong retro vibe. There’s no denying that this collection is bound to get people shaken up.
