Children undergoing cancer treatment must spend long periods of time in the hospital wearing the same traditional, drab hospital gown. In recognition of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, Hope & Heroes challenged the fashion industry to use their talents to re-imagine the next generation of hospital gowns and bring joy to these patients, all while helping to raise awareness and support for a cure.

“Every year, thousands of families face a devastating childhood cancer diagnosis. We work with the highly-skilled and compassionate team of doctors, researchers and staff at Columbia to create an exceptional treatment experience—one that gives children the very best chance to overcome their disease but also allows them to experience as much of their childhoods as possible,” said Bob Bomersbach, executive director of Hope & Heroes. “The Hope & Heroes Fashion Challenge brings imagination, new resources and hope to our work and we are deeply grateful for the designers, brands and students that have leant their time and talent to this important cause.”

Noteworthy designer Heidi Weisel developed a hospital gown design as part of the challenge, along with students from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Submissions include imaginative designs that range from super hero themes to under-the-sea designs to interactive swap-and-change creations.

The public is invited to visit https://hopeandheroes.org/fashion-challenge/ until November 8 to vote for their favorite gown and help spread the word about the campaign.

In addition to funding Hope & Heroes charitable work, the goal of this fundraising campaign is to reproduce, and bring to life, at least one of these designs for child patients at CUMC. All designers will be honored at the Hope & Heroes Annual Gala on Thursday, November 8. Luxury fashion brands, including Giorgio Armani and Mara Hoffman, are also supporting the campaign through premier auction items to support Hope & Heroes charitable work.

“Despite their cancer diagnosis, kids are filled with imagination and joy. They deserve to look and feel great in something that is comfortable, familiar and most of all fun to wear!” said Heidi Weisel, designer and Council of Fashion Designers of America member. “As an industry, we are inspired by their determination and strength. We are here to help children and families so one day we will all live in a world free of childhood cancer.”

CUMC is home to the largest and most comprehensive pediatric oncology program in the tri-state area, and one of the largest centers in the nation for stem cell and bone marrow transplants. Funding from Hope & Heroes ensures that every child who comes through its doors has access to the newest and most advanced treatments available in the United States, including the latest chemotherapy and radiation oncology regimens, bone marrow and stem cell transplant treatments, immunotherapies and personalized medicine specifically tailored for each patient. Research funded through this effort benefits not only the children at CUMC, but also children worldwide.

Q: Tell us about how you became an artist working in the field of jewelry.

After teaching myself about the science behind metalworking, I became obsessed with the manipulation of raw materials. My technique of choice is hand fabrication, and I consciously disregard the traditional.

Instead, I use unorthodox combinations of precious metals, rough gemstones, concrete and resin to create tension and expose the unexpected. I thrive in an atmosphere of controlled chaos, while allowing the materials to dictate the final outcome of my work.

I thrive in an atmosphere of controlled chaos

I draw my inspiration from New York City’s textures, architecture, concrete and steel. While manipulating raw material, I look for contrasts, empty contours and visible and imagined boundaries, which allows me to conceptualize the shape within.

I am fascinated that metal can change so drastically from smooth and industrial in appearance to an intriguing organic form bearing no resemblance to the original. It is as if an object not only assumes a second life but reveals its true identity. My attitude towards life is decidedly non-conformist, and so is my art.

Cult Italian Shoe Favorite Baldinini is Re-Releasing 100 Years of Shoes

Baldinini Presents the Archive Project

Represented by GUITAR Advertising & PR.

Baldinini, the legendary fashion house born in 1910, is creating new editions of a long history of storied shoes. With more than 100 years of history to choose from, the Archive Project is sure to excite both Baldinini obsessives as well as earn new fans. The first shoes in the re-release are culled from their collection of iconic Texan boots.

The boots, born in the mid-’80s, have been a notable part of the history of Baldinini, and become true symbols of the Italian “western” style, now re-edited for the Fall/Winter 2019 women’s collection.

The distinctive elements that have characterized them, such as the vaguely eighteenth-century hussar style, and even the Tex-Mex with studs, or the elegant floral work typical of flamenco, revive in new models, in a perfect fusion between aesthetics and modernity.

[portfolio_slideshow id=69659 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

“The company has a rich archive, a precious heritage consisting of about 3000 pairs of shoes, cataloged and organized thanks to the collaboration of the University of Bologna,” says Gimmi Baldinini, CEO of Baldinini.

The company has a precious heritage consisting of about 3000 pairs of shoes

“A real testimony of a past that is and will always be our future and that, soon, could be part of our personal museum. This is a very important project of which the Texan boots are the first stage. Other iconic models will be recovered from our historical archives and updated in the next collections.

“For next winter, the new Texans, rigorously Made in Italy, rework the proportions of the eighties models. The shape has a more elongated line and aggression is emphasized by cutting edges at the sides. The heel is important, oversize, embellished with special processing or metallized.

“The theme that distinguishes the new boot, proposed in the different color variations, is an optical geometric design, with fancy inserts. A work and a design, dear to the brand already thirty years ago, that fit the model line covering it with full size inlays.”

GLAM+GO’s Founder Erika Wasser Spills About the Blow Out Revolution

GLAM+GO’s Founder Erika Wasser Spills About the Blow Out Revolution

I don’t think there’s a single woman out there who doesn’t like to get a blowout. I also don’t think there’s is a single woman out there who likes to sit in a chair for over two hours to get her hair done. Erika Wasser is one of those women, and three years ago she decided she was tired of spending so much of her time getting blowouts.

As a standup comedian and TV host with “naturally unruly hair,” she wanted to find a way to cut the time she spent getting her hair done to the 20-30 minutes her team managed to transform her hair between sets. In her true entrepreneurial nature she started to pitch the idea of a speedy blow dry salon and started GLAM+GO with just two chairs. Fast forward three years and she has grown the business to 12 national locations in NYC, LA, Miami and Washington D.C.

When I heard that I could get a gorgeous blow out in half an hour, I was skeptical. My visit to the TriBeCa flagship shattered this doubt faster than I could finish my coffee. The trick is that they don’t wet your hair, and get straight down to business. The stylist had achieved a loose curl that is a very traditional blow out style in half an hour, and it even stayed intact the following day.

Erika Wasser has truly created a genius company that gives woman the hair we all want, in a fraction of the time. We sat down with the CEO and Founder to pick her brain on GLAM+GO. Trust me when I say you’re going to want to hear this for yourself!

GLAM+GO

[portfolio_slideshow id=69658 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Q: Tell us a little bit about how you came up with the idea of GLAM+GO.

Prior to starting GLAM+GO, I was working full time as an on-air digital host for HGTV and as a stand up comedian. I was regularly in (very tiny!) green rooms where I was getting my hair done really efficiently without sacrificing quality.

Realizing we didn’t need all the hoopla to achieve the same — if not better — hair results, in less time, was a major “lightbulb” moment for me! This is what all busy women need, not just the ones on camera.

This is what all busy women need

Q: What were some of the hurdles you had to overcome starting the company?

For starters, I knew nothing about hair and had limited-to-no skill doing my own. Secondly, I knew nothing about business or how to start one. I was really lucky to have great people around me like my parents who are both entrepreneurial, and my then-roommate at the time Myk Likov (founder of Modern Om). He had a Wharton MBA and was just starting his business and had just made his pitch deck. I had no idea that all you needed to start a business was an idea and Powerpoint, but everything grew from there.

I had no idea all you needed was an idea and Powerpoint

Q: How did you cut down the traditional blow out time to 30 minutes? I left your salon with a blowout that looked like I was in the chair for hours!

If I told you, I’d have to kill you. : ) A small tip, the saying that “piss-poor planning creates piss-poor results” applies to blowouts, too.

Don’t get lazy about sectioning!

Q: You talk a lot about balancing your work and social life while still staying active and healthy. What are the best practices you live by to achieve this? I know it is always such a struggle for so many of us.

Finding time that’s yours and yours alone and being unapologetic about it I think it really important for your sanity. Figure out what works for you and be honest about it to yourself and others.

For me, that’s my mornings, because if I don’t work out in the morning, it is not happening for the day. Anyone who is scheduling things for me knows this. Balancing social life is a bit harder, but luckily, if I really mess up, I can gift a friend a blowout.

Q: You are opening up more locations this year, including one in D.C. and just opened your flagship in TriBeCa. Are you planning on growing your brick and mortar presence even more next year, or venturing into other areas of the beauty industry?

Looking at the end of 2018 into 2019, it really feels like we’re about to hit our stride. We’re adding multiple locations in California, a second Miami location within the Shore Club, launching a new partnership with Joel Warrens Salon Project within Saks Downtown Brookfield Place this fall, and, yes, entering Washington D.C. for the first time!

Our D.C. location, within the Fairmont Georgetown, will be our largest footprint, which is very exciting. We’re also branching out our service menu, looking to add a men’s membership for shape ups, hair cuts and root touch up across multiple locations.

We’re looking to add a men’s membership for shape ups

We’re careful to listen to our members, who we see on average six times per month, to make sure we’re giving them the services they want, where they want them, so we’re constantly innovating and coming up with new ideas.

It’s going to be a big year!

Dining in London: Searcys at the Gherkin

0

Searcys at the Gherkin

Located in London’s iconic Gherkin Building, Searcys is the restaurant that lives the 39th floor. What’s most impressive is its stunning aerial views of the city below. Everything is shiny and bright, great for a daytime meal. The restaurant evokes a feeling of exclusivity, and the staff treats each table the same, especially with the surprise champagne toast upon arrival. Service is smooth and concise, yet does not feel rushed at all.

Searcys Gherkin

[portfolio_slideshow id=69211 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

The brunch menu on the weekends warrants the perfect amount of food for what one would look for in the early afternoon after a couple of drinks at the bar on the top floor.

[portfolio_slideshow id=69212 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

What might be better than the food itself is in fact the cocktails the bartenders at the Gherkin have come up with. Each one is carefully concocted, and all feel quite special since none are served in the same glass. They each look like a fun work of art that probably took twenty minutes to make.

The New York store has a bespoke interior concept, designed in collaboration with London based art, design and fabrication studio Matter. Characterised by Whistles’ signature contemporary design approach, the space has a gallery-inspired aesthetic, taking influence from sculptural references and using an artisanal approach to create handcrafted fixtures. The central rails form a key focal point as the frames emerge from sculptural forms, shapes and materials, each one unique to the other.

Large-scale paintings designed by British multi-disciplinary artist Rosie Tonkin grace the walls, exclusively commissioned in bright, bold graphic designs to contrast perfectly with the stores palette of pale pinks and soft neutral tones.

“We are really excited to be opening our first standalone store in New York,” says the brand. “North America is a key market for Whistles and forms a crucial role in our US expansion plans. Since entering the US market in 2014, we have built a loyal, ever-growing customer following who love our distinctive designs and effortless approach to dressing. It’s fantastic we can now offer our full collections in the US for the first time!”
