NYFW: Beauty Spot

Beauty is only skin deep. Except — we suppose — for beauty of the soul. So, we guess you could say skin-deep beauty, specifically, is really only skin deep. Unless you have both kinds, in which case: um, that’s a lot of beauty. But we digress. Fortunately, you won’t have to pick apart semantics at the new Fashion Week Beauty Lounge, by Next Artists in conjunction with Fashion Week Online and FTL Moda.

The lounge will be held at FTL Moda’s NYFW venue, Space 404. There will be beauty products, beautiful people (inside and out), and lots of gifts and fun to leave you feeling great for the rest of the day, week, month … maybe beyond.

No invite? No problem! We’ll be bringing you LIVE, exclusive behind-the-scenes coverage of the Next Artists / FWO Beauty Lounge, with Next’s top models, celebrity hair stylists and makeup artists, and VIP guests of New York Fashion Week.

We’ll be bringing you LIVE, exclusive behind-the-scenes coverage.

Next Artists — a division of Next Models — is, of course, part of the legendary talent agency founded in 1989 by Faith Kates with Joel Wilkenfeld. They’ve represented an incredible range of talent over the years: everyone from Alexa Chung and Alice Dellal, to Jessica Alba, Lana del Rey, Suki Waterhouse, and many others.

Our countdown will begin soon … stay tuned!

Super Review: Sicky Sunglasses: Insane in the Membrane!

0

Throwing Shade: Me and Gigi Hadid Go “Matchy Matchy” … Not Really

sicky-hadidster-mainMy sunglasses always seem to come to tragic ends. My Persol 714 “Steve McQueen” series sunglasses? Unceremoniously sat on. My Dita Classe 19009d? Hung on the outside of a carry tote (dumb, I know) and left behind at In-N-Out Burger.

Making matters worse is how difficult it is for me to find sunglasses I like in the first place. Everything I wear inevitably seems to accentuate something I don’t like.

54mm-size frames look gigantic on me, making me look like Trevor Horn from The Buggles, or maybe Jeff Goldblum when he becomes The Fly. “Tiny” 47mm-size frames (like my Retrosuperfuture acetate shades) make me look like something horrible happened to John Lennon; although — at 49mm — my Saint Laurent translucent frames look pretty okay.

Long, tragic story short: I’m insanely picky, and probably just insane, when it comes to finding sunglasses I like.

Some make me look like something horrible happened to John Lennon.

Enter Sicky sunglasses, my latest eyewear acquisition.

Insane in the membrane. Insane in the brain!
Insane in the membrane. (Insane in the brain!)

I admit, since I’ve been in fashion, I’ve developed a weakness for eyewear from Japan and Italy. Although Italy still reigns supreme in the realm of handmade ready-to-wear, both Japan and Italy are renowned for artisanal eyewear, combining cutting-edge optics with painstaking craftsmanship etc.

I’ve developed a weakness for eyewear from Japan and Italy.

Mainly — after decades of being dirt poor, and going from one pair of $10 mall knockoffs to another, which tend to “spontaneously deconstruct” — my heart beats fast for anything that feels well-made. (See my entry on shoes, and prepare to shriek.)

Tangent alert: I spent the day off at Barneys yesterday, and couldn’t help but feel cheated that these Louboutin Spiked Dandelion Venetian Loafers shout “look at me! I’m fashionable!” … whereas my twice-as-expensive A1923 cordovan ankle boots go mainly unnoticed.

Which is more expensive? I’m crying as I write this.

louboutin-shoes-spiked
$1,395 – Fashion forward!

Which is more expensive? I'm crying as I write this. $2,200 – Lives on a railroad!

My point (I guess), is how things feel is as important to me as how they look, and maybe moreso. (Although it does help if they look great, too.)

So back to my latest acquisitions, just in time for summer: Sicky CS S10 in matte black (also available in ivory), and the Sicky S1 in coffee gloss.

You may notice that my new “bff” — in terms of two completely unrelated people who now own the same brand of sunglasses, as might happen with Nelson Mandela and Kid Rock, maybe — Gigi Hadid is also a fan of the brand, wearing a number of Sicky models including the aforementioned CS S10s and the Sicky S14 silver mirrored.

Gigi Hadid is also a fan of the brand.

The Hadidster Rocks Sicky

[portfolio_slideshow id=14035 align=center width=499 click=advance thumbnailsize=40]

I’m loving my Sickys. First of all, they indeed look sick. (In the “hip” sense — you know, “dope” — not like when I drive through Burger King and get the “jalapeño chicken fries” and regret it for the rest of the day.)

The CS S10s, handmade in Japan, feature polarized lenses, which is one of my all-time favorite sunglass features when I can get them. My cellphone screen looks green; the LED clock on my car dash flickers spookily; and there isn’t a glare as far as the eye can see. Since I don’t drink or take drugs, polarized lenses are about the closest I get to feeling high. (And that’s a pretty anemic rush, I do realize.)

The S1s, handcrafted in Italy, are framed by some really thick Italian acetate, which is great to hold. I love thick acetate because it’s sort of like wearing a frame made out of non-sticky Jolly Ranchers, creating that weird urge I sometimes get to chew things that feel really great to the touch, like my Guidi-leather M.A+ origami wallet. (TMI?)

2016: The Year of Us

1

There Is No “Them” … And Never Has Been

Editorial

nyfw-official-schedule-2015-spring-2016If you’ve been following FWO regularly, you already know we’re not just about cutting-edge news (although — in the expression “cutting edge” — what exactly, is cutting what? The whole figure of speech is a bit confusing. We just see one of those jagged haircuts that implies the wearer is living “on the edge!” Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Anyway, please don’t ask to see our yearbook photos).

No, we’re also known for over-reaching editorials where we talk about stuff we have no business talking about. And on that note ….

We loved 2015. (You probably already guessed that from our editorial “You Are Beautiful: Fashion’s 2015 Revolution“. Even Vogue discussed the changes sweeping fashion in terms of “revolution” in a pictorial in its latest issue.)

But, what if we could take these ideas further in 2016?

So in 2016, we’re calling for the “Age of Us.”

But this is a special kind of “us.” “Us” usually appears in the context of “us vs. them.” But what is there is no “them,” and never has been?

But what is there is no “them,” and never has been?

What if we were all just here, supporting each other, regardless of differences in sexual orientation, body type, country of origin, or religion? What if the very same “race” invented classical music, country, jazz, and hip-hop, built the pyramids, put a rocket into space, and invented crêpes, tandoori, and sushi? What if, instead of saying “the Chinese culture” or “the Russian culture,” we said our African culture, or our Polynesian culture? What if all cultures on earth belong to all of us? What if, on the 2020 census, we crossed out all the racial options and wrote in “human.” Is that corny, or is that more accurate?

What if we were all just here, supporting each other?

What if money wasn’t as important as being happy? And what if happiness could come from biting into an apple, or simply walking down the street?

How would the world change? And how would a small investment in these new ways of thinking create a new world where we look out for one another? How many problems would simply disappear?

Food for thought.

Here’s to an amazing 2016!

Wayin: A Cutting-Edge Accessory for Fashion-Forward Brands

wayin-fashion-week-real-timeThese days, social media touches every aspect of our online experience. But as user-friendly as the front-end of sites such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook has become (or tried to), the analytical side has traditionally left much to be desired. Until now.

Wayin has helped clients from Nike to Teen Vogue to track and create real-time experiences for their social media followings. “Visualizations” allow companies to track real-time trends in social media in ways that are user-friendly, even fun, for statistical analysis and interaction with core customers.

Wayin helps clients track real-time trends in social media in ways that are user-friendly, even fun

We like it so much, we’ve been using it this fashion week to give our readers a taste of what’s happening, from street style to notifications about real-time runway live streams.

It’s almost eerily simple to use.

For example, a short code snippet produces this “Collage” visualization:

(The above is an interactive, real-time example.)

And if you want to see how other fashion outlets are using it, take a look at this recent contest created for Teen Vogue:

But the metrics go further than accumulations of pictures from Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. The interface allows you to find out where buzz is being generated, and display it as a “Heat Map” visualization to team-members, or your readers, for a fun overview.

Your readers can point at different parts of the world to see where — and what — the buzz is happening. In the real-time example below, we’re curious to know which fashion week is most popular where, based on hashtag usage.

The colors of the map below will actually change as we pass through each fashion week, with different concentrations as different times.

What about polls and contests? Are people more excited about Paris and New York fashion week, for example? Why not have them vote, with a “Tilt” visualization?

They can vote, with a “Tilt” visualization.

(This is an interactive, real-time example.)

Why not create a contest centered around your visitors’ (or customers’) social media interaction with you? The possibilities are vast, and you explore even more visualization here.

But what is Wayin, and how did it come about?

scott-mcnealy-wayin-sunCo-founded by Scott McNealy, the former Sun Microsystems CEO and co-founder, Wayin is led by key Sun Microsystems alumni, as well as top digital and media industry veterans.

“It’s thrilling to see how Fashion Week is using the power of social display to maximize exposure of this week’s shows,” said Jordan Slabaugh, VP of Marketing, Wayin. “What was once an exclusive event for fashion’s most elite is now an engaging experience that fashion lovers everywhere can take part in. With a real-time look at the hottest trends and designers, a whole new circle of consumers can get a front row seat and instantly share in the excitement.”

FWO is Getting a Makeover

0

Pardon Our Redesign

As we prep for September (and cover a little menswear in the meantime), we’ve decided it’s high-time for FWO (and its sister sites) to get a much-needed design refresh.

Yep, FWO is growing, which is rad-opolis. But after 3 or 4 years of doing this (and tweaking the design slowly, in between 1,000 other octopus-armed tasks), we thought it might be nice to upgrade our overall look. Like, maybe even use actual CSS, instead of hand-coding so much stuff in HTML, like a caveman. (And if you don’t know what we’re talking about, good for you!)

So while this story is about our makeover, we thought we’d throw a little bonus love to one of our beloved sponsors, Toni & Guy.

Once the design is done here (hopefully in the next week or so), we’ll roll it out to NewYorkFashionWeekLIVE and the other city sites.

Stay tuned; more fun to come.

Lots of love,

FWO

How to Attend or Buy Tickets to Fashion Week

3

Updated 9/26/2015

Attend New York, London, Milan or Paris Fashion Week

Jump to:
New York | London | Milan | Paris

Want to buy tickets to the upcoming “Big 4” series of fashion weeks? Or volunteer, work or show your designs?

If so, we have good news and bad news. Attendance rules (and opportunities) vary by location, and are generally based on your connections to the industry. But in some cases there are alternatives for those who want to do a little legwork.

See below for information on how to attend, participate, volunteer or work during fashion week.

ATTEND NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

INDUSTRY SHOWS

Industry New York Fashion Week shows are reserved for buyers and press.

Most buyers and press outlets contact the design houses directly. Bloggers can submit for accreditation to producers like IMG. IMG registration generally opens up a few weeks before the events. Several thousand people apply, and only a small percentage are accepted. There’s also an application fee (usually around $80), which doesn’t guarantee approval. And even if your application is approved, that still doesn’t guarantee admission. It simply allows you to submit to the various designers for their consideration to actually attend shows.
There’s also an application fee (usually around $80), which doesn’t guarantee approval. And even if your application is approved, that still doesn’t guarantee admission.
Of course you can can always watch the shows streamed live, online.

OPEN-TO-THE-PUBLIC SHOWS

More and more opportunities are being offered to the public, via prize giveaways, and opportunities to buy tickets, from people such as Macy’s, emerging designers, and more.

There are also various other companies of varying degrees of legitimacy offering “tickets” to New York Fashion Week.
In general, we don’t recommend companies selling “tickets” to New York Fashion Week.
For the most part, we don’t recommend companies selling “tickets” to New York Fashion Week. Although some of these companies may be trustworthy, and shows may be fun, you’re essentially buying at your own risk. Find out about the company’s track record, first. There’s nothing wrong with seeing these shows, but be aware of what you’re getting.

If you go, have a great time. 🙂

Volunteer at New York Fashion Week

For volunteer opportunities, you might want to try the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), IMG, or individual design houses (start a-Googling).

Watch and Participate Online

You can watch the shows live, and interact, at NewYorkFashionWeekLIVE.com.

ATTEND LONDON FASHION WEEK

London’s most prominent series of events are held by the British Fashion Council. As with Mercedes-Benz’s series of events in New York, you’ll need to register on the official site (in this case, that of the British Fashion Council). You’ll also need a verified address in London to register (presumably to show you’ll actually be able to attend if accepted).

But if you can’t get into those events, you’re in luck. Because directly following London Fashion Week is a four-day, open-to-the-public series of events called London Fashion Weekend. And yes, you can buy tickets!
But if you can’t get into the official London Fashion Week events, you’re in luck, thanks to London Fashion Weekend.
Volunteer at London Fashion Week

Want to volunteer at London Fashion Week? We recommend trying the British Fashion Council site. Although we’ve never seen specific opportunities posted there, if you wanted to contact the BFC, that would be the place.

You could also inquire at the London Fashion Weekend site (see link above).

ATTEND MILAN FASHION WEEK

To attend Milan Fashion Week, you’ll need to register at the National Chamber of Italian Fashion, which organizes the shows of Milan Fashion Week.

Volunteer at Milan Fashion Week

The Chamber of Italian Fashion has a job network where you can upload a resume or browse job opportunities. (Yes, we’ve actually seen some there.)
Milan Fashion Week has an active job network.
ATTEND PARIS FASHION WEEK

Even though New York came first, Paris is still considered by many to be the grande dame of all fashion weeks (Paris having been the epicenter of fashion for most of the history of Western civilization).

As with the other fashion weeks, you can apply for accreditation, this time at the French Federation of Fashion. (You’ll note the screening process is more intense, and the language on the website a bit more stern.) You can also try emailing the designers directly, as each season the schedule is posted with each designer’s press contact.

You’ll also need a verified Paris address in order to attend.

But you don’t have to wait for fashion week to see a runway show in Paris. The Galeries Lafayette has runway “trunk shows” (showing new collections debuting in-store) throughout the year, and they’re free to attend.
You don’t have to wait for Paris Fashion Week to see a runway show in Paris.
Volunteer at Paris Fashion Week

Your best bet here is to volunteer for any of the design houses. You can also try contacting the officials at the official Paris Fashion Week website.

We wish you lots of luck in your fashion adventures!

Lots of love,

FWO

From New York to Milan, Fashion is Changing

Behind the Scenes, Fashion is Changing

by Mandy Murphy

Just as fashion is constantly changing, the entire fashion industry itself is undergoing a transformation. Two big trends we have our eyes on here at Fashion Week Online are an uptick in interest in menswear, and a renewed appreciation for artisanal craftsmanship.

First, Quick News Roundup

If you’ve been following fashion news of late, you’ve seen the announcement that Scott Sternberg’s Band of Outsiders has disbanded. In other news, supposedly IMG is struggling to find a new automotive sponsor, but if there’s one thing the press can be relied upon, it’s to make much ado about little.

And in a little bit of brighter light, Victoria’s Secret’s live televised show will be returning to New York in 2015.

That’s the quick “fashion news roundup.”

Two Trends to Watch

But what’s happening behind the scenes?

First, we’re now witnessing the rise of menswear. Remember how not long ago, being a man who cared about clothing earned you the moniker “metrosexual” (a word that never really carried much meaning, except perhaps a shade of scorn)?

Not long ago, being a man who cared about clothing earned you the moniker “metrosexual.”

In 2015, “menswear fashion websites” like Mr. Porter are commonplace. Designers like Trina Turk have also made moves to capture the menswear market. At Turk’s site for men, the appropriately named “Mr. Turk,” beautiful Euro-styled swimwear is available for men who aren’t afraid to show a little skin.

But it doesn’t stop with retail. The CFDA is holding its first-ever menswear only shows this summer, to feature star menswear designers such as John Varvatos.

Milan, Paris and London already have dedicated “men’s fashion weeks” (actually lasting 3-5 days).

Our prediction is that more and more men will continue to catch the “fashion bug” in the United States (as they did many years ago in Italy, Paris and London). Dressing well won’t be an anomaly; increasingly it will be the norm. (And we don’t mean square-toed black shoes and poor-fitting blue button-downs.)

But that’s not the only change we’re seeing.

The second trend is a return to artisanal craftsmanship. Disturbing issues have been raised about the cruel effects of cheap “insta-fashion.” One of the solutions is renewed respect for hand-crafted clothing, which lasts longer and is also (not surprisingly), more beautiful.

One of the solutions is renewed respect for hand-crafted clothing, which lasts longer and is also (not surprisingly), more beautiful.

Films like Men of the Cloth explore the artisanal craftsmanship of yesteryear, while hinting at signs of its rebirth.

And if you think artisanal menswear is confined to suits and ties, witness edgy, handmade tailoring from an artist like Simone Cecchetto of A1923, or Boris Bidjan Saberi.

The future of fashion is being created now.

And as far as we can see, the future is bright.

Grammy Award-winning artists Maroon 5 and Juanes will perform.

For the first time on network television, viewers will get a glimpse into Victoria’s Secret’s sexiest swim show of the year, THE VICTORIA’S SECRET SWIM SPECIAL, Thursday, Feb. 26 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT), on the CBS Television Network. This new special follows the Angels as they land in Puerto Rico to shoot their swimwear campaign. With exclusive access to the models as they tackle jungle treks, underwater shoots and overcome personal fears, the special gives unique insight into their character and life stories. Joining them on the island to perform exclusively will be Grammy Award-winning artists Maroon 5 and Juanes.

Supermodels Adriana Lima, Candice Swanepoel, Lily Aldridge, Behati Prinsloo, Alessandra Ambrosio, Elsa Hosk, Martha Hunt, Jasmine Tookes, Stella Maxwell, Joan Smalls and Jac Jagaciak will talk about shooting in Puerto Rico, the significance of VS Swim to their lives and careers and what drives them.

victorias-secret-swim.jpgCapturing their first of three Grammy Awards as Best New Artist of 2005 and going on to sell more than 17 million albums worldwide, Maroon 5’s releases have gone gold and platinum in more than 35 countries. The band quickly won over fans and critics alike with the hybrid rock/R&B sound they introduced on their debut album, Songs About Jane and their double-platinum release, It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. In 2010, the band debuted their third studio album, Hands All Over, which featured the group’s anthemic chart-topping smash single “Moves Like Jagger.” The song has since gone on to become one of the best-selling singles of all time. Maroon 5’s last album Overexposed reinforced the group’s status as a powerhouse in popular music with all of its singles rising to the top of the charts and setting an all-time record for the most #1s (six in total) by a group in the Top 40 chart’s 20-year history. The group’s latest release, V, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart and features the hit singles “Maps” and “Animals,” which just hit #1 on the Top 40 chart, and their new single, “Sugar.” On Feb. 16, Maroon 5 will embark on a world tour that kicks off at the American Airlines Center in Dallas and takes them all over North America and then Europe.

With seven solo albums to his credit and multi-platinum sales of more than 16 million copies, Juanes is the world’s leading all-Spanish language rock artist – both a two-time Grammy and 20-time Latin Grammy Award winner with nine #1 singles on Billboard’s Latin Singles charts. Hailed by the Associated Press as “the first truly international rock star to emerge from Latin America,” Juanes is also frequently recognized as one of the Spanish-speaking world’s leading social media voices with an online following of more than 19 million fans. The Colombian superstar’s dedication as a global activist also extends far beyond his passionate lyrics and is seen in his wide ranging charitable work for his own Mi Sangre Foundation and as a co-founder of the Paz sin Fronteras (Peace Without Borders) organization. Working with famed rock producer Steve Lillywhite, Juanes’ latest album, Loco De Amor, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s “Latin Pop Albums” chart and topped iTunes sales in more than a dozen countries. In addition to already winning a Latin Grammy Award, Loco De Amor holds a current Grammy Award nomination for Best Latin Pop Album. The new year has also seen the release of Juanes’ latest single, “Juntos (Together),” recorded for the new Disney movie “McFarland USA.”

THE VICTORIA’S SECRET SWIM SPECIAL is being produced by done and dusted, inc. Edward G. Razek, Ian Stewart and Hamish Hamilton are the executive producers. Hamish Hamilton is the director.
