USC Visionary Artist Award

A finance professional turned high-end luxury fashion designer, Vivienne Hu’s goal is to bridge the gap between a woman’s professional and personal lives. Her designs, which take inspiration from designers such as Oscar de la Renta and Yigal Azrouel, blend European elegance and New York street style to create looks that are equal parts professional, fun, and fashion-forward. Now she has a new credit to her name: recipient of the USC Visionary Artist Award.

In 2012, she founded her personal brand: Vivienne Hu. Vivienne used her perspective observing woman in the world of finance to create her designs. She believed that women were becoming forcefully dressed or uniformed in their personal style.

The University of Southern California Pacific Asia Museum recently hosted its 40th year gala, recognizing Vivienne Hu and Arts Philanthropist Mei Lee Ney.

The Gala recognizes and awards select artists each year, requesting their presence. This year the 2019 USC pacific Asia Museum Gala chose to honor Vivienne Hu with the Visionary Artist Award along with Mei-Lee Ney for the Legacy Award.

The ceremony has raised more than one million US dollars: all funds donated to charity.

Born in China, Vivienne attended the Goethe-Institut and the University of Hohenheim in Bonn, Germany where she completed her BA degree. After her graduation, she worked in the investment banking of Citigroup headquartered on Wall St., New York.

She went on to pursue a fashion degree from Parsons School of Design, and her looks have successfully attracted fashion stars’ eyes since the launch of first collection.

Choupette’s Diary Launches ‘RIP Daddy’ Collection in Memory of Daddy Karl Lagerfeld and It’s for A Good Cause

Dahhhlings! Let’s cheer up and support the star of Karl Lagerfeld’s life, Choupette Lagerfeld, as brought to fictional life via Choupette’s Diary.

Karl Lagerfeld’s passing was difficult for everyone. Fortunately we have Choupette’s Diary to fill the void. Yes, it’s a big responsibility to cheer herself — including Karl’s beloved fans — up, but Choupette is doing an incredible job and taking this role passionately.

Photos by and courtesy Choupette’s Diary

On March 14, Choupette’s Diary announced the launch of its ‘RIP Daddy’ collection in memory of Daddy Karl Lagerfeld. The collection includes hoodies, t-shirts, mug, iPhone cases and an actual diary. Well, not Choupette’s own diva diary, but a diary notebook. The ‘RIP Daddy’ collection was designed by Choupette’s Diary illustrator, Monica Smiley of eighty seventh ST.

“Together, we will persevere. I ask that all humans show their support by shopping the collection using my (Instagram) bio link. Then, wear & socially share the ‘RIP Daddy’ collection, tagging moi and using the hashtag #RIPDaddy.”

A portion of the proceeds from select items will be donated to the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

Choupette Lagerfeld was first owned by French model Baptiste Giabiconi, who asked Karl’s maid to take care of the now 7-year-old Birman cat while abroad.

Karl once told in an interview in 2015, “Choupette belonged to a friend of mine who asked if my maid could take care of her for two weeks when he was away. When he came back, he was told that Choupette would not return to him. He got another cat who became fat, and Choupette became the most famous cat in the world and the richest. She did two jobs and made 3 million euros last year. One was for cars in Germany and the other was for a Japanese beauty product. I don’t allow her to do foodstuffs and things like this. She’s too sophisticated for that.”

Choupette was also on the cover of Vogue Brazil alongside supermodel Giselle Bundchen in 2014, photographed by Karl himself.

Exclusive Interview with Choupette’s Diary

Q: Many people were affected when your Daddy Karl passed away. Did you feel the same? Are you currently on a one-on-one pet therapy session?

The loss of Daddy Karl Lagerfeld sent me into mourning.

Q: What’s your most memorable moment with Daddy Karl?

All of the memories we shared together hold a special place in my heart, especially the moments shared in his library where he would sketch, and I would playfully paw at his papers.

Q: You are the most glamorous and rich cat in furry history; how are you “living the life” day by day?

Right now, it’s important to me that I give back to those animals who can’t “Live the Life” as you humans say. For this reason, I launched the #RIPDaddy collection today [interview was on March 14th before the launch]. With the purchase of select items from the “RIP Daddy” collection, a portion of proceeds will be donated to the Helen Woodward Animal Center, a private non-profit organization in California that has been committed to the philosophy of people helping animals and animals helping people for over 40 years.

Q: Will you still be the muse on Karl Lagerfeld’s collections in the future?

Only time will tell.

Q: What’s your stand right now on your dream job as a satirical fashion commentator on Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar?

Have their people call my people!

Q: Any inspiring words to your dahhhling followers out there?

Daddy will always be watching over us all from heaven, seated beside Mommy Coco Chanel.

ERR;OR Reveals SS19 Graphics with Leader Gerard Adams

ERR;OR Reveals SS19 Graphics with Leader Gerard Adams

PUL Sheen, The creative director and designer of ERR;OR NYC and Korean artist Kove Lee want to involve and question the public through an interactive design. On Monday, March 11th Creative & Leader Gerard Adams sat with Designer PUL Sheen as he gets first take on the new interactive Print t-shirts in collaboration with designer Kove Lee. There will be three different versions of the t-shirts which are called Scientism, John Nash, and SAFEWORDERROR.

Scientism

Referring to the attitude that only science provides true knowledge and can explain all problems but by putting graphics about scientism and religion in the same space, they want to question the public, “Can science be explained with faith?”

ERR;OR

[portfolio_slideshow id=78085 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

John Nash

The film “Beautiful Mind” which starred Russel Crowe as John Nash which is a film about a genius mathematician who was challenged with the problem “ Riemann Function”. The “Riemann Function” is what ERR;OR focuses on as it was one of the world’s seven most difficult problems that drove many mathematicians to death. Pi, the mathematical symbol representing the Riemann Function, has been slightly modified to make it look like a Chinese letter which meant death. The words on the back of the shirt are in German which tell the story of Riemann.

SafeWordError

The Riemann Function led a lot of geniuses to death, so the image on the t-shirt which is related to the tragic situation is beautifully represented by the soft tones of baby pink and blue.

Each t-shirt will have a different and in depth meaning which lead to the overall question: “Can faith be explained with science?”

Gerard Adams says, “Faith is within us all and we are all allowed our own opinions. There are many things science has yet to prove but we are allowed the tools ourself to possibly figure things about. We need to challenge ourselves more which will push us in many ways and to open more doors.”

Allowing fashion to bring us together and allow us to mentally challenge ourselves as we question some of the most difficult challenges. Interaction is what PUL Sheen strongly believes in and is focused on as he brings on innovation to each piece created. This particular collection is focused on the grand scheme of science and mathematics from symbols to word translations. It is more than just a t-shirt, it is an interaction between the mind and body.

The images are Leader and Creative Gerard Adams posing with each t-shirt and interacting with Designer PUL Sheen. As a motivational speaker and influence it is Gerard Adams job to tell a story and depict or understand the complexity of certain degrees of life so he was the perfect candidate to have first sit down with as he went through the t-shirts.

These t-shirts are set to release in April while in the meantime ERR;OR will be collaborating with SXSW on March 15th, with his second presentation as well as a music showcase featuring some of Korea and Japan’s biggest artist.

Peach and Lily Launches Power Calm Cleanser

You know the feeling after you use a cleanser, and your face is so dry you’re unsure if it took half your skin off, along with the makeup? Yeah, it’s a real problem. I sometimes skip all the steps like toner, essence and serums to go straight for a heaping amount of moisturizer just to pump some hydration back into my skin. Well, Alicia Yoon heard our cries for help and solved all of our problems with the launch of Power Calm Hydrating Gel Cleanser.

The toxin-free formula took 40 chemists and several years to get just right. The team had finally come up with a perfect calming cleanser, but Yoon figured why not try and add some super hydrating ingredients into the formula. Two sulfate-free cleansing agents work to remove all impurities deep within the poors while leaving your protective barrier untouched, preventing that stripped dry feeling of other cleansers.

The formula has insanely calming ingredients like chamomile, ginger and cucumber extracts, camellia and hyaluronic acid. When your skin feels calm it now has energy to go things like brighten dark spots, product collagen and fight acne. The cleanser is repowering your skin to do the things it doesn’t have energy to do because of barrier stress. Now all I need is a Power Calm Cleanser for the rest of my life…

Australian Sustainable Designer Debuts With The R Collective

Award-winning designer, Tess Whitfort, brings her up-cycled and groundbreaking zero-waste collection from competition catwalk to commercialisation

Up-cycling brand The R Collective, born from NGO Redress, launches award-winning Australian sustainable fashion designer, Tess Whitfort’s first commercial collection, entitled Avoidance. The collection is created using rescued textile waste and innovative zero-waste design techniques to catalyse a circular fashion system. Tess shot to fame after winning the world’s largest sustainable fashion design competition, the Redress Design Award in Hong Kong. Her resulting collection, which is heavily featured in the latest season of Redress’ award-winning documentary series Frontline Fashion , is available at www.thercollective.com with select styles available in Asia’s leading luxury department store, Lane Crawford.

Focusing on emerging designers and educating the next generation of the fashion industry, the Redress Design Award drives growth towards a circular fashion system. In collaboration with The R Collective, Tess’ competition collection was transformed from concept to catwalk and into retail, demonstrating a strong business case for positive change.

Tess Whitfort

[portfolio_slideshow id=77795 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

“I wanted to incorporate a bit of attitude and punk edge into this collection, whilst keeping it timeless and within The R Collective’s aesthetic,” said Tess Whitfort, who has a Degree in Fashion Design from Australia’s Box Hill Institute. “There are many stereotypes around sustainable fashion and it is often portrayed as natural, feminine, and wholesome. Instead, I create grungy streetwear so that badasses can wear ethical clothing too. Environmental issues are going to affect us all, so sustainability can’t just be for people who love the environment, it can’t be a niche, it needs to be for everyone.”

Tess’ six-piece Avoidance collection features an aviation inspired jumpsuit alongside the experimental ‘Preston Dress’ with adjustable belted detailing and a classic retro varsity style jacket, which all feature unique twists on classic designs. In partnership with award-winning sustainable manufacturer, TAL Apparel, Tess’ zero-waste pattern techniques brought about groundbreaking fabric utilisation during manufacturing, with several of her styles achieving less than one percent fabric wastage, compared with an industry norm of approximately 15 percent. Her collection is formed of upcycled denim, crepe, wool, and cotton , which were rescued from world-leading luxury brands, mills, and manufacturers, thereby avoiding the need to create virgin materials and minimising fashion’s negative environmental impacts.

Social impact business The R Collective works collaboratively with Redress to prove Redress’ legacy at pioneering a more sustainable fashion industry. The R Collective collaborates with Alumni from the Redress Design Award to provide a creative platform to reduce waste and pollution in fashion.

“Working with the Redress Design Award Winner, Tess Whitfort proves the essence of Redress and The R Collective’s beliefs that creativity, collaboration, and a design-driven sustainable and ethical collection deserves its place with the world’s best retailers to inspire shifts in fashion consumption,” said Christina Dean, Redress’ Founder and The R Collective’s Co-Founder.

The theme of the AW2019 collection – “éclat de la diversité” (brilliance of diversity) focused on the colors of the autumn season and was inspired by the hope for inclusion rather than exclusion of human beings – as in foliage of autumn colors – parallels the possibilities for us to understand and to feel spiritually connected, thereby inspiring that crucial balance of respect for one another and life.

The lululemon x Soulcycle Collab We Want Every Piece From

0

lululemon x Soulcycle

Two of the biggest brands in the athletic space known to have a cult-like following — lululemon and Soulcycle — have teamed up to give the world a highly innovative 20 piece collection designed to enhance the Soulcycle experience.

Over the last year, the two teams created lifestyle and cycling specific pieces for both men and women to fall in love with. From breathable reflective leggings to a water-resistant jacket, you now have the perfect outfit to feel comfortable and confident in.

I tested the new collection out on my weekly 10:45am Sunday class with Roxie (my personal favorite instructor) and ran errands afterwords, and let me tell you … I ended the experiment with buying even more pieces from the collection.

I ended the experiment with buying more pieces

If you cycle regularly you understand the need for cooling, breathable clothing while you spin your heart out on the bike. This collection features lululemon’s Everlux fabric that is known for high ventilation and comfort.

The Ride and Reflect Tight is a high-waisted legging in a highly breathable fabric that will stretch and breathe where the body needs it the most while active. The coolest part about these leggings is that when you are riding or use a camera flash you can see the two brand’s logos down the sides of the leggings.

If you have a larger chest you know that finding a full coverage sports bra for cycling is challenging. The To The Beat Bra is a answer to all of our problems. The fabric wicks sweat and the design gives optimal support with a chic strappy design.

On the men’s side there is a variety of shorts, tees and hoodies to keep you warm to and from class and to keep you on the top of your game during class. The Pace Breaker Short is perfect for keeping everything where it is supposed to be during a cycling session and is made from a super lightweight, four-way stretch, sweat wicking fabric.

At UFW’s main location, Mystetskyi Arsenal art space, guests beheld the performance, during which models transformed each other’s outfits radically, demonstrating the multipurpose use and styling versatility of the AW19 pieces. 2 pairs of trousers would unite to form a coat, the sleeves would become a hood, and a vest would turn into a bag – these are just a few examples of the utilitarian variety celebrated at DZHUS’ happening. Hair and makeup looks were created by Y.Vision Creative Group. Cruelty-free footwear was provided by INTERTOP.

Founded in 2010 by Ukrainian designer and stylist Irina Dzhus, DZHUS conceptual womenswear brand is recognised for innovative cut concepts, multifunctional transformer garments and austere industrial aesthetics. Inspired by the complex structure of the ambient, Irina Dzhus generates unique experimental constructions. The brand’s ideology stands for consciousness and humanity. Stephen Mihalchik

New York-based Stephen Mihalchik is one of our favorite fashion week photographers. Coming from humble beginnings, he’s worked to realize his dream of shooting fashion and glamour subjects in setting most people only dream about.

“I started my photography journey eight years ago out of the love and appreciation I had for the art since I was a child. For the first five years I studied photography and all the technical details, as well as doing tons of free work to practice my art. The two biggest influences in my photography career were the teachings by world renowned pro photographer and author Tony Northrup. I was also extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to train with the amazing fashion photographer Emily Soto at one of her elite workshops. Three years ago I started my own photography business and its been such a wonderful and wild ride.

“From such humble beginnings, I now shoot at the fashion shows during New York Fashion Week. This season was a mix of bold styles and lots of leopard print, super-long sleeves and elegant headwear. I was also very happy to see so many trends and styles from the ’80s coming back.

Hakan Akkaya brought back almost everything I loved about ’80s fashion. Puffy coats, animal prints, studded leather jackets and more. Rufat Ismailov’s Afffair collection was jaw dropping. A dramatic difference form last years stunning collection. Bold, bossy and eye catching. Clothing that instantly makes you respect the person wearing it. All the designers brought something different and fun this year.

“My goal this season was to spend more quality time with each designer’s collection and not rush through each show. To really immerse myself in their creations and understand their vision. I achieved that and enjoyed every minute.

My goal is to understand their vision

“I think back to when I bought my first little Canon point-and-shoot camera and started taking photos of trees and flowers for a local calendar in the suburbs. A few months ago I shot Paris Hilton.

“Never give up believing in yourself.”
