Interview with Christian Siriano: Spring 2019 New York Fashion Week

Christian Siriano NYFW FW19

Represented by Agentry PR.

When I think fashion, I think Christian Siriano.

The Spring 2019 show was the highlight of my New York Fashion Week experience and was everything fashion should be — bold, dramatic, and captivating. The show was held at Gotham Hall with celebrity guests such as Cynthia Nixon, Whoopi Goldberg, and Carmen Electra, to name a few.

The Spring 2019 show was everything fashion should be

The Spring 2019 collection was inspired by the perfect dream holiday vacation in Hawaii. Chic and elegant island life inspired by bold tropical prints, animal-printed organza separates, textured raffia coats and jackets, and bright-citrus evening gowns.

The collection was playful, colorful, bright, and romantic, with femininity but still powerful and exciting. It has movement like a dance at a Hawaiian luau and feels fresh and young for the ever-growing Christian Siriano customer.

Interview with Christian Siriano

Q: How did you find your inspiration for this collection?

The goal was to take everyone on a Hawaiian holiday. I didn’t want it to be typical Hawaii with grass skirts, but still wanted to capture the essence with beautiful, elegant, and romantic designs.

Q: What is your favorite piece from the collection?

Oh, it’s so hard to pick a favorite. I don’t know, I love it all. They’re all my babies. Like 70 babies.

Q: What is your creative process?

It’s very random. I like a fabric, I pick a place, or like I like an idea. I do a lot of sketching and then just go right into it. I never run out of ideas, so that is helpful. I just enjoy the journey of it.

I just enjoy the journey of it.

Q: How are your collections evolving and what do you plan to change for your collections going forward?

I do many different things each season. I push myself. I try to use fabrics I’ve never worked with. I like to have fun and also show amazing different types of people on the runway.

I like show amazing different types of people on the runway

CIVIDINI Spring 2019: Milan Fashion Week

Cividini Milan Fashion Week FW19

Represented by Guitar Advertising & PR.

Karen Blixen and Out of Africa were the inspiration for the latest collection from husband-wife design duo Miriam and Piero Cividni.

“When the movie Out of Africa came out, Miriam and I still did not think about creating CIVIDINI,” says Piero Cividni. “But taking care of fashion and creativity we did not fail to see it being impressed by the skill with which Milena Canonero managed to masterfully combine the bourgeois aesthetics of the European North of the years immediately preceding the first world war with the influences and the commingling of the colonial society in Kenya.”

“Looking for incipit for the new collection that we imagined could be exotic and at the same time metropolitan, we remembered that film and the aesthetic emotion that had caused us and from that moment everything was clear, we had created the common thread that he would have guided in his conception of development.”

Cividini: Milan FW19

[portfolio_slideshow id=67010 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Here then the conceptualization of those aesthetic sensations reinterpreted according to the codes of CIVIDINI give life to a mix between bon ton and military whose contextualization finds hospitality in the modernity and cleanliness of the design that has always distinguished CIVIDINI.

The polka dots are “smudged” so that their traditional graphicity is softened by this desired and sought imperfection while the camouflage print recreates the atmosphere that unequivocally refers to colonial Africa in the collective imagination.

Among the constants:

Leggings designed with large polka dots and squares that sneak into each look.

Lightweight turtlenecks with polka dots or hand-painted checks, woven on ultra-thin frames.

And finally, a loose pleated skirt in plaid fabrics, with polka dots, plain inlays or in printed camouflage around which the whole collection pivots; carried by itself or with overlapping prints and drawings and lastly under the over and enveloping clothes as well as with elongated and soft blazers or with the rigorous duster, closed by small snaps.

Not the aesthetic canons of that society but Karen Blixen’s way of being a woman guided us in the contemporary transposition of that distant memory.

Collina Strada Spring 2019: New York Fashion Week

Collina Strada NYFW FW19

Represented by Mode Public Relations.

The soft sounds of a gong being struck reverberated through the small Soho public school gymnasium as the Collina Strada S/S19 show was being seated.

Designer Hillary Taymour continues to present conceptual collections that reflect the current political and social nature of our world, for S/S19 she specifies that she was “reflecting on the turmoil and heartbreak that continues to emerge in our country” and created a collection “centered around a movement towards collective inner peace.”

Collina Strada: NYFW FW19

[portfolio_slideshow id=67054 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

The relevance was clear given this seasons’ show is titled “Sound Bath.” Young children marched out at the start of the show taking their seats in a semi-circle of singing bowls in the middle of the presentation area.

As models walked out there was a clear message of spiritual journey, the kind taken on pilgrimage, with the silhouette of prayer beads painted on some model’s chests as if sunburnt in place intertwined with a color palette symbolized by all seven chakras. The first look rooted the collection with a white satin button down worn tied and falling back with a matching midi skirt.

Taymour’s use of organza continues from previous collections, here we see it in menswear button up shirts and flowy layering pieces. Tie dye bodysuits and dresses were paired with faux cow hide trenches and skirts giving off an aptly timed Burning Man festival-wear vibe. Elsewhere, biker shorts and hoodies pulled in the streetwear aesthetic that so proliferates the current influencer fashion obsession.

Conceptual fashion is sometimes hard to place in reality but Taymour’s take on visual messaging through fabric and color, combined with wearable pieces, provide believable wardrobe additions to her curated clientele.

REVEAL PROJECT was started by TATRAS designer Masanaka Sakao, who wanted to build upon his experience as a designer to pass on Japan’s history and tradition.

With REVEAL PROJECT he created an unprecedented brand concept that maximizes the value of Japanese culture from a creative perspective, aiming to position Japan’s unique techniques and tradition as a standard in the worldwide fashion industry.

Creating a true Kyo-Yuzen design and embellishment involves more than fourteen manufacturing processes including conceptualization, rough drawing, masking, brush dyeing and illustrations. Each of these steps are performed separately by artisans, who are skilled and specialized in each particular process. All of these artisans are based in Kyoto, in Kyo-Yuzen’s “Kyo”, which means the city of Kyoto.

The first collection came to fruition through the support of KIMURA SENSHOW, a renowned hand drawn Kyo-Yuzen kimono producer, who is based in Kyoto. The results were 7 silk jackets with hand drawn Kyo-Yuzen design, which mark REVEAL PROJECT’S first collection. The bomber jackets are all made of the purest Japanese silk and each garment displays its very own Kyo-Yuzen design. After the first presentation in Paris, on February 27th at the American Cathedral, an unveiling show in Japan was held in Kyoto Nijo Castle.

This new Spring-Summer collection displays ten spring coats, which will also deliver the traditional Japanese artisanship on a larger and bolder modern garment to the now, making the viewer and observer aware of the prestigious craftsmanship and the boldness of Japanese traditional design. This will be the real fusion of Japanese tradition and modern fashion.

Antonio Croce Spring 2019: Milan Fashion Week

Antonio Croce Milan Fashion Week FW19

Represented by Guitar Advertising & PR.

Taste, smell, touch, sight and sound: femininity passes through all the senses to outline a sensuality that feeds off of sensations.

Uncountable, omnipresent and ethereal: a woman’s story that speaks of taste and of elegance and is translated into the presentation of Mirabilia, the SS 2019 collection designed by Antonio Croce.

Antonio Croce: Milan FW19

[portfolio_slideshow id=66955 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Style

Mirabilia is a collection that was born from a strong connection to the Sicilian landscape and becomes its extremely striking sartorial and iconographic translation: the allure is strong and gritty, the mash-up of nature and art creates an evocative passion ready to be worn. Expression of a sensual and radiant femininity, determined and independent, with a strong and recognizable character, the line amplifies a new idea of elegance.

Fabrics

The natural elements are transfigured by a combination of reflections and references that centres around precious textures, from richly embellished fabrics to others characterized by an only seemingly simple appearance. The collection goes from glove leather paired with cotton gabardine and cotton and silk mikado; to viscose and silk crepe with lightweight chiffons; and 3D and printed lace, and tulle that is also printed and silk fil coupé.

Colours

The colours of nature inspire the colour palette of the collection: above all else, the gold of wheat stalks that, like a mantra, becomes embroidery on the outerwear and joins whites and blacks; the neutral shades of green and beige, which amplify the colours of the fields and the earth. And the poppy red of the all-over prints that bloom freely on dresses, shirts and trenches.

Shapes

Lightweight dresses in silk printed with floral motifs, garnished with ruffles and smocking, mix with carefully embellished leather jackets, Sahara jackets with defined waists and oversized coats with details typical of bikers.

GCDS Spring 2019: Milan Fashion Week

GCDS Milan Fashion Week FW19

Oh what fun! GCDS, aka ‘God Can’t Destroy Streetwear’ invited us to Futuro Beach. It’s a wake-up call to all fashionistas who don’t yet care about sustainability, and will find themselves looking back in awe of the quality of today’s clothes.

When I received the invite, I knew this show would be something else. A small paper box, not unlike an aspirin container you reach for everytime you’re hungover. Inside, 5 small pipettes containing some transparent, inexplicable liquid.

GCDS: Milan FW19

[portfolio_slideshow id=66843 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Two brothers, Giordano and Giuliano, the latter being the Creative Director of the streetwear brand founded in 2015, chose the Mall Firenze on September 21st as their SS19 showcase scene. The crowd, dressed up and accessorized with GCDS wear, was flocking to the venue like moths to a flame. Having no priority lane for celebs, Chiara Ferragni had to wait in her pink/red glitter outfit and high heels right in front of mere plebs like me. Following her from entrance to front row, we passed color bursting vending machines and neon signage until we reached the green plastic garbage bag wrapped stage.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to GCDS Futuro Beach spring/summer 19,” the Tokyo-based Insta-icon Naomi Watanabe sent greetings from a giant pixelated screen and also from across us in the front row.

The show kicked off with military looks in three different colours, worn by Chantelle Winnie and others, buckled up with bump bags and accessorized with G-C-D-S earrings. Silver jackets, matching with oriental, reflective coins on skirts, jackets and neck bags followed until pink neon hipsters with white fringe boots, orange rainwear and camouflage, pimped with pink glitter flowers also appeared.

For this collection GCDS collaborated with not only Onitsuka Tiger, one of the oldest shoe companies in Japan, but also with Pokemon, which gave the line a cartoonish touch. Crazy ponytails and oversized eyewear caught our attention until triple-breasted models, looking straight out of Blade Runner, popped up on the catwalk – supposed to give a look into what human bodies could look like in the future.

“A mixture of iconic pieces that might last till the end of time or maybe not” (according to the brothers) were not only fun to watch, but also sent a message about the current quality of fashion, and the value of Made in Italy, which hopefully will last forever.

The collection is based on a technique called Shadowfolds, an interesting cross between origami and pleating. This creates geometric patterns in the fabric and when held up to a light source, it reveals varying layers of shapes and light gradients in the manipulated textile. The designer will feature designs that use centric symmetry and emulate that in both the bodice design work and skirt styles. This technique was inspiring, because just like with anything in life, when you look at things in a different light, it can reveal a whole new level of depth, intricacy, and meaning. It’s always important to see thing from multiple perspectives.

Fashion Week Mexico Coming to NYFW: The Shows in February

Fashion Week Mexico NYFW FW19

Represented by The Riviere Agency.

New York Fashion Week closed out on a high note for the Latino and international community, with the announce-ment of Fashion Week Mexico launching MEXICANOS IN NEW YORK, “MX_NY” at New York Fashion Week this upcoming February, at IMG’s NYFW: The Shows.

The official announcement was made during a private party at ATLA, one of Manhattan’s buzziest Mexican restaurants, for the fashion set with editors from Elle, Shape, Buzzfeed, and Cosmopolitan in attendance.

MEXICANOS IN NEW YORK is coming to New York Fashion Week this February

Guests such as Alfonso Sumano, Director of Tourism Promotion Council of Mexico in NY and Carlos Gerardo Izzo, Consul of Public Affairs at the General Consulate of Mexico in New York and the Mexican designer Claudio Limón, enjoyed signature cocktails made with Don Julio Tequila, created by Fatima de León, and nibbles from famed chef Enrique Olvera’s NoHo eatery.

Some of the fashion industry’s most prolific power players came out to lend support for the project, from fashion editors such as Estilo DF and RSVP from Excelsior, to buyers such as Bloomingdale´s. All of them signal that the American market and New York Fashion Week are ready for Mexican design talent to emerge.

the American market is ready for Mexican design talent to emerge

The group show at February’s NYFW will feature popular Mexican design houses of AnuarLayon, Lorena Saravia, and Yakampot.

COLOüRS, the company that produces Fashion Week Mexico and has cultivated and curated Mexican design talent for the past twelve years, is spearheading this project to familiarize the US market with, and promote, Mexican fashion. Labels are the first to jump on board with this initiative. Sponsored by Visit Mexico, the event introduced attendees to some of the rich talent of America’s Southern neighbor and demonstrated to the American fashion community that Mexico is poised to have a significant role in the marketplace.

COLOüRS has cultivated and curated Mexican design talent for the past twelve years

The timing of this project is fitting, with Mexicans making up over ten percent of the US population and retailers struggling to find ways to appeal to consumers by connecting with them through experiential activations that make more personal and emotional connections.

Cory Crespo, President of COLOüRS, is the mind behind this push for market share of Mexican designers. “The goal of the project is to transform the mindset, and push for the development of strong brands that can match the creativity of their artistic proposals with viable commercial offerings,” says Crespo.

Interview with Cory Crespo, President of COLOüRS

Q: What made you decide that this is the right moment to launch Fashion Week Mexico at New York Fashion Week?

I’ve been running Mexico Fashion Week for the past 12 years, and this is a great moment to present Fashion Week Mexico because Mexican fashion designers are ready, and I’m ready.

We are prepared on the creative side, and we are prepared on the business side — we are prepared to sell and to represent Mexico to the world. Something amazing is happening in the creative industries of Mexico. So it’s time for Mexican fashion, and it’s time for Mexican designers.

Our idea is to present a block of three designers in February. We would like to start the journey today, start to prepare for the presentation in February at New York Fashion Week, and just start making business here. Mexicans are also actively involved in the world. We wish to emphasize the Mexican talents that have already been seen worldwide, and show that we are ready to grow even more — all these designers have been in the industry for more than ten years, and we are ready to make a move.

Q: What are the brands you’re bringing to New York City? Who’s the target audience for each of the three brands you’re bringing here?

We are first introducing Anuar Layon, Lorena Saravia, and Yakampot. We have a good mix of designers here: these brands are very different from one another, so we’re going to be able to get to different targets and cover different types of consumers.

Fashion Week Mexico has 50 designers presenting every season, and out of these 50 designers, Anuar Layon, Lorena Saravia, and Yakampot are the ones that are more ready to be presented worldwide in terms of their maturity in creativity and business.

Q: Have you personally attended the New York Fashion Week? And How is it different from Fashion Week Mexico?

One thing I like about New York Fashion Week is that the entire city is involved, and if you are in the city, you are part of New York Fashion Week.

Another thing I admire about New York Fashion Week is the promotion and media coverage for it — it’s like a week of content explosion. And New York Fashion Week is very business oriented: it’s like a working week, not a social week. Fashion Week Mexico is more of a social event … as Mexicans, we like to celebrate. [Laughs.]

Q: Why did you choose New York city to be your first stop? What’s the next stop after New York City?

We wanted to start with the best. We want to start in the major leagues. And if it works in here, it works everywhere.

There is also a huge Mexican community here which could be very helpful for our growth. I think Europe would be the next market. There have already been a lot of Mexican designers in Europe, like in Paris and Berlin. But first, we need to be here, and we need to learn.

We’re willing to learn. We’re willing to follow the rules and to enjoy the journey.
