Well-Heeled: Aethon Ulyse’s FW17 Collection

Olympian Style

What better place to host a celebration of Aethon Ulyse’s FW17 collection than at the Aire Ancient Baths in TriBeCa? As guests enjoyed massages and the baths, they were greeted by four models wearing only gold body paint and a pair of the shoes from the collection. A harpist played poolside all evening, further heightening the feeling of being just a little deified for the evening.

Payden Sewell, founder and creative director of Aethon Ulyse, officially launched Aethon Ulyse in 2016. “Aethon” is an ancient Greek word meaning “blazing” or “shining” — which gives some idea of the effect Payden wants his footwear to have on the wearer’s psyche.

Aethon means “blazing” or “shining.”

Inspired by Greek myths and the beauty of different cultures, Aethon Ulyse is designed for the modern woman who’s fearless about where she’s going. Handcrafted with artistic sensitivity, each collection is made only from the highest quality materials sourced in Italy, with signature 24k hammered gold insoles.

Details like mink fur, mirror studs, bold suedes, and the brand’s standard hammered 24k gold insoles evoke seductive and strong notes in every pair of shoes. These shoes are clearly made for a woman of similar nature, dangerously beautiful with a hint of mystery.

The gothic-inspired pairs — like the Marie Antoinette-esque block heels, or heels adorned with black Swarovski jewels and a lace-up front — made a particular impression.

We have a feeling we’ll be seeing these at some of the season’s biggest events and cocktail parties.

And with a lifetime warranty behind every pair — including complimentary replacements for almost anything that breaks — these should appeal to the sensible goddess within, as well.

Miami Swim Week 2018 Is Coming This July 20-26

Miami Swim Week: Your Place in the Sun

It may not be summer quite yet — and we still haven’t even entered Bridal Fashion Week — but if you’re anything like us, you’ve already started daydreaming about sun, surf, and sand. (Or at least a trip to a pool somewhere.)

For us, resort and swim go hand-in-hand. And as much as we love the string bikini, there’s nothing quite so exciting as a good Ecuadorean hat and a little cubanismo for good measure. Maybe that’s why we got such a kick out of Hale Bob‘s very excellent Miami Swim Week show last season.

This year — following what we do best — FWO will be creating a calendar of Miami Swim Week 2018 events, where you can get an overview of what’s happening from the various producers of Miami Swim Week this July. We’ll also offer referrals to those wishing to register to attend Miami Fashion Week, or participate as a designer, model, or sponsor.

Most importantly (we hope), you’ll also be able to follow the excitement, there and on our own Miami channel.

Miami Swim & Resort is only a few weeks away. So stay tuned for a little much deserved fun in the fun.

Diva Maria: Christophe Guillarme | Paris Fashion Week Fall 2017

Diva Maria: Christophe Guillarme | Paris Fashion Week Fall 2017

Iit’s no small thing to take on the task of honoring legendary opera singer Maria Callas in the form of a collection.

Still, Christophe Guillarmé embarked the self-appointed mission for his Fall 2017 collection, “Diva Maria,” that looked to capture some of the passion of the controversial, groundbreaking singer and the roles she’s played, from Violetta in La Traviata to Bizet’s Carmen in Carmen. The show was held at L’Atelier Renault Paris Champs-Elysées.

Ave Maria

[portfolio_slideshow id=28471 align=center width=600 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Guillarmé is a young designer by any reckoning: a graduate of the College of Applied Arts Duperré whose works have already been shown in fashion weeks as far afield as Dubaï, Marrakech, Monaco, Bangkok, Moscow, South Korea, and Kazakhstan.

In seeking to blend traditional, romantic looks with modern glam rock, Guillarmé enters a fertile field (lately explored by Galliano’s Bill Gaytten, among others), where the romance of the past blends powerfully with the passions of youth.

Some of our favorites included look 25, a powder-pink, silk satin long dress with black top outlined with metal fringe, and look 27, an old pink Mikado silk long dress mix with lace adorned with crystals.

The recent season’s collection is a fine one, and we look forward to seeing more from this promising talent.

LGBTerrific: A Night of Fashion Love and Support with Jeffrey Fashion Cares

A Night of Fashion Love and Support with Jeffrey Fashion Cares

Certain issues and topics are more important than the narrower aspects of fashion — the latest trends, looking around for who’s best dressed in the room, and what he/she has on. Although fashion has always had a charitable streak, in recent years the industry has asserted itself as a concentrated voice for diversity, equality, and love.

Monday evening the fashion and beauty world came together for the 14th anniversary of Jeffrey Fashion Cares, which was founded by creator of the renowned store Jeffrey New York, with the purpose of raising awareness for those living with HIV/AIDS, and also LGBT rights.

At The Event

[portfolio_slideshow id=28413 align=center width=600 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Entering the Intrepid Air and Space Museum, anticipation for the evening filled the air. Everyone was there for a good cause, and came out in their best to show how important the night was to them.

The attendees were a veritable “who’s who,” with heavyweights such as Anna Wintour, Joseph Altuzarra, Jeffrey Kalinsky (creator of Jeffrey), Chris Salgardo (president of Kiehl’s), and celebrity stylist/tv personality Brad Goreski. They all came with the same purpose: to help raise money for Jeffrey Fashion Cares, which has raised some $15 million to date.

Jeffrey Fashion Cares has raised some $15 million to date.

As the cocktail hour continued before the main event of the runway show, there was a silent auction featuring some amazing rare pieces. As I drooled over some of items and talked with our social media director Chris Lavish about what we might expect for the evening, they announced, “Everyone make your way into the runway portion and please find your seats.”

While everyone was settling in and looking at the program on their seats, there was an opening video by who else but Sir Elton John, welcoming all attendees and thanking them for their continued support of Jeffrey Fashion Cares, his own foundation the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and the other two organizations involved, Hetrick-Martin Institute and Lambda Legal, the nation’s oldest and largest legal organization working for the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, and people with HIV/AIDS.

Directly following the video, the JFC honored Chris Salgardo, president of Kiehl’s, who has done extensive and amazing work to further the rights of the LGBT community and awareness of those living with HIV/AIDS.

the JFC honored Chris Salgardo, president of Kiehl’s.

Under Salgardo’s stewardship, Kiehl’s has created collaborations with top artists, fashion designers, celebrities, athletes, and universities to raise funds and awareness for non-profit organizations within Kiehl’s charitable pillars, which includes HIV/AIDS research. The most impressive charitable initiative created under Salgardo’s leadership is Kiehl’s LifeRide for amfAR, which has raised more than $1,600,000 for amfAR since 2010, funding eight cure-related research projects.

It was almost time for the show to begin when a familiar voice started becoming more distinct from backstage … out appeared Brad Goreski (known for Fashion Police and for being a celebrity stylist, though the true “fashion heads” may have first seen him in Rachel Zoe‘s show). Brad was accompanied by an auctioneer who started taking bids for five amazing experiences featured in our program. 8K here, 10K there … the energy of the auction was great and was accompanied by true bids to help a great cause.

8K here, 10K there … the energy of the auction was great.

Now it was time for the runway show featuring some of the world’s top models … how was that, you ask? We’ll let the images speak for themselves.

Thank you to Jeffrey Fashion Cares for having us and Purple PR for your great communication in materials we needed.

I urge every reader to please look up the charities mentioned in this piece … let’s each help out where we can.

Shark (Tote) Attack! Miami Swim Week, Please

0

Our Miami Swim Week Daydreams

Okay, we admit, summer isn’t even here yet. But we’re pretty stoked about Miami Swim Week anyway: possibly because we like to shop.

We dream of walking into the shows with something as amazing as this tote from Thom Browne. And our boyfriend — having recently been attacked by his own leather, shark-shaped tote — would be rolling up in these pants.

Comical? Yes, but who wants to be serious on the beach?

Thom Browne … gimme, gimme, gimme

Yes, Miami Swim Week won’t be here until July, but that can’t stop us from daydreaming about the annual swimsuit event that will showcase the best swimwear and resort looks for 2018. We’re working on a “Complete Guide on Miami Swim Week 2018” already, but meanwhile, here’s a short primer:

Funkshion

Funkshion will be returning for its 15th annual presentation. One of the largest Miami Swim Week producers, the events encompass a pop-up shop, lounge, and multiple runway areas. Last season’s shows included designers Aguaclara, Lee and Lani, The Scene, Maaji, For Love and Lemons, Sinesia Karol, Blue Life, Beach Riot, Kai Lani, Annna Kostuova, Luli Fama, Tori Praver, Vix Paula Hermanny, Kyboe!, Maaji, Acacia, Maxim Swimear, Robb & Lulu, and 6 Shore Road by Pooja.

Dive

Dive will return for its third year. Produced by Tiffany Norman, co-founder of MADE Fashion Week, Dive looks to be an artier version of Miami Swim Week (just as MADE is very much an artier version of IMG’s events). Not surprisingly, Dive’s shows are held in Wynwood, Miami’s art district, rather than in the hotels off Collins Avenue like most of the other events.

Art Hearts Fashion

Led by Erik Rosete — who also produces shows in New York and Los Angeles — AHF‘s shows are held in conjunction with Funkshion, and this year are reported to be taking place at the W Hotel. Designers last season included Just Bones Boardwear, Du Aqua, Cirone Swim, Courtney Allegra, Hale Bob, Argyle Grant, L.A. M. B. By Gwen Stefani, Mister Triple X, Rocky Gathercole, Koco Blaq, Bella Mar Swimwear, Elie Madi, a kickin’ party at LIV, and more.

SwimMiami

SwimMiami is, in a sense, a newcomer, and also a familiar face, produced by the people who worked with IMG for the last 10+ years creating Mercedes Benz Swim Week, IMG’s now-defunct version of Swim Week. This year’s events are slated to include Hammock trade show. Full details are yet to be announced.

Swim Show

Oh, and in case you aren’t confused enough yet, we would be remiss to forget the Swim Show, held by the Swimwear Association of Florida. (Also, is it just us, or are there a whole lotta’ butts on that website?) Sort of the “Magic Las Vegas” of the swimwear industry, the convention hosts 7,500 brands and buyers from 60 countries across the world. And that’s a whole lotta’ colorful fabric, my friend.

Fashion Parties

Of course, every season of Miami Swim Week comes with its share of parties: kick-off parties, after-parties, parties at sunset … and some that maybe last until dawn. From Miami Magazine’s SPLASHION to the Lazy Sunday BBQ, you’re bound to find something to float your boat.

And speaking of boats. Somebody give me $2,700 for this tote?

Pretty please?

Arab Fashion Week is Coming May 16-20: From Resort to “Ready-Couture”

0

Dubai is Looking to be the “It” Fashion Week for Pre-Collections

It looks like the “Big 4” of New York, London, Milan and Paris will have to watch out. Dubai is jockeying hard to make a place for itself as a distinctive fashion capital, specializing in resort / pre-collections and “ready-couture:” custom-tailored garments that are more personalized than ready-to-wear.

According to the Arab Fashion Council, who organize Arab Fashion Week, the aim of its 4th Edition is simple: revolutionize the Fashion Week Calendar and — almost as an afterthought — amplify the “see-it-now, buy-it-now” model by setting up the world’s largest pop-up department store under the title of THE BOUTIQUES.

From May 16-20, 2017, Arab Fashion Week Ready-Couture & Resort 2018 will take place in Dubai, at the Meydan Hotel & Grandstands, attracting designers from all over the world to present their resort collections in a truly exotic destination and to address the appealing luxury consumer of ready-couture.

the only platform designed to showcase “ready-couture” and resort collections

H.E. Cavaliere Mario Boselli, and Honorary President of the National Chamber of Italian Fashion, organizers of Milan Fashion Week

This year the runways will also host “one of the most influent Italian designers in the world,” according to Arab Fashion Council Executive Honorary President H.E. Cavaliere Mario Boselli, who also sits as the Honorary President of the Camera Nazionale Della Moda Italiana, organizers of Milan Fashion Week.

While New York, London, Milan are the Landmark capital for ready-to-wear, and Paris for haute couture, Dubai is pioneering “ready-couture:” the platform introduced by the Arab Fashion Council to address the luxury client who is increasingly looking for privacy and exclusivity alongside with social responsibility and ecology-care.

the luxury client is increasingly looking for social responsibility and ecology-care

The mission of “ready-couture” is to re-establish a more privileged designer/client relationship, which has been lost with ready-to-wear. The model has found in Dubai its most suitable environment, as it addresses perfectly the needs of the Middle Eastern and Asian markets, where the most affluent clients ask for custom-tailored garments and fine personalization.

Arab Fashion Week is also a privileged destination for resort and pre-collections. The impressive infrastructure and the truly exotic flair of Dubai marks the city as the most appealing fashion capital for resort, which make up for the lion’s share of the designer-clothing revenue.

Arab Fashion Week is also a privileged destination for resort

Along with the focus on pre-collections comes the choice to organize the event in May, long after the fashion week calendar usually followed by other fashion capitals. Indeed, the main concern of Arab Fashion Week is to meet the requirements of the fashion industry, addressing buyers who spend 75% of their buying budget on the pre-collections. “[It’s] a new perspective which might be soon followed by other councils, leading to a revolution in the fashion week calendar,” says Boselli.

Ultimately, the essence of the 5-day Arab Fashion Week is to offer an industry platform that gathers buyers, UHNWI, and press from around the world.  This year, the fashion week will be kicked off on a special gala dinner setup under the title of Fashion Night Out, where designers will showcase a preview collection for the private invitees from the region’s most important individuals.

More than 25 fashion shows, VIP ladies Luncheon, THE BOUTIQUES — 50 temporary boutiques at the world’s largest pop-up department store — seminars, 5 days of designers workshops, after-parties along with a Royal Gala dinner, Red Carpets and AFC Industry Awards will follow. While last season registered more than 16,000 guests, “the upcoming Arab Fashion Week foresees an even greater result by adding value to the international fashion system,” said Jacob Abrian, CEO of the Arab Fashion Council.

last season registered more than 16,000 guests

The Arab Fashion Week is a creation of the Arab Fashion Council (AFC), the world’s largest non-profit fashion authority, representing the 22 Arab country members of the Arab League. It was established in London in 2014 with the license of an International Extraterritorial Authority to develop the Fashion infrastructure and creative economy in the Arab World.

Wolf & Badger Bringing Emerging Designers to New York

New “Emerging Designers” Store Comes to New York

“Emerging designers” are the much-fêted facet of the fashion industry that everyone loves to hear and think about, but few know how to truly support.

It’s indisputable that there’s a lot of talent out there: from the many productions of New York Fashion Week all the way through to Paris. The designers who can afford it may have runway shows, but it’s hard to know where to go to buy these designs after the walk throughs are done.

Yes, you can make a list of websites, but … isn’t there a place you can just go?

UK-based retailer Wolf & Badger has created a concept that addresses that very issue: an online and offline retail space dedicated to “discovering and nurturing best-in-class emerging talent.”

Basically, it’s the boutique concept on steroids, with 700 emerging brands from around the world, available at retail locations and on wolfandbadger.com.

The Face of Different

[portfolio_slideshow id=27990 align=center width=600 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Now Wolf & Badger is coming to New York.

The new 2,500 square foot, multi-level store will be located at 95 Grand St. in SoHo, just steps from Alexander Wang, Acne, Dior, and Saint Laurent.

As George Graham, co-founder and CEO of Wolf & Badger, explains, “Shoppers are bored of seeing the same designer brands on every street and in every mall around the world. Instead of bringing them more of the same, we are proud to introduce customers to the most unique, individual and exciting independent brands out there.”

Shoppers are bored of seeing the same designer brands on every street.

The new Grand Street store will introduce New York consumers to a highly curated selection of independent, exciting brands from around the world. These brands will be available for purchase in-store and online on a three-month, rotating basis.

The Grand Street location will also utilize Wolf & Badger’s pioneering “serviced retail” concept to launch, promote and support these new and emerging brands in the U.S.

Under this model, participating designers will have access to key business services: from creative and merchandising consultancy and retail advice, to press and marketing support.

Interested designers can apply here.

Interview with DROMe’s Marianna Rosati | Paris Fashion Week Fall 2017

0

(Video: Wappato Media House)

Interview with DROMe’s Marianna Rosati

Although we take it rather for granted, leather is perhaps fashion’s most intimate and sacred material. There are master leather workers out there — on the menswear front, names like Maurizio Amadei and Simone Cecchetto come to mind — as people who are able to give a naturally intransigent material an almost liquid life. In a more color-forward vein, another is Marianna Rosati, of DROMe: hailed by everyone from Vogue to Harper’s Bazaar.

With her father, Ferrero Rosati — who created leather products for Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, Jil Sander, and Céline — DROMe is doing new things with the medium, including blouses and summer shorts. (You can see some of the current selection at LuisaViaRoma and FarFetch.)

On a rainy day during Paris Fashion Week Fall 2017, Wappato Media House and FWO went backstage to interview Marianna and learn more about DROMe. Thanks to Eef Vicca of Factory PR for the bringing it together.

Q: What does “DROMe” mean, and why did you choose the name?

DROMe is a word that means many things, but mainly in the Scandinavian languages it means dream. In nomadic languages, it means a song nomads sing while they’re traveling. So for me, the dream and the journey together have quite a strong meaning.

the dream and the journey together have a strong meaning.

Q: What can we expect to see today? What was the inspiration?

This is about deconstruction; it’s about cutting and pasting simple dresses together to create a layered silhouette. I took elements from another dress, or elements from a skirt, or elements from a top to create a more constructed but deconstructed item.

I played with volumes and with fluidity, with silk that really melts together with very soft leather … contrasted with very strong material, to create this kind of contrast between a very feminine woman and a very determined, masculine woman, too.

A contrast between a very feminine woman and a very determined, masculine woman, too.
