Interview With VDM The Label

Represented by The Riviere Agency.

Fashion Palette Miami Swim Week opened with a ’90s-inspired collection by VDM the Label, complete with “Ice, Ice, Baby” beats in the background. Bright reds, blues, and blacks rocked the runway with Fila sneakers and scrunchies.

Having just launched over 6 months ago, VDM the Label is quickly making waves in the world of swimwear. Writer and fashion influencer Kyleigh McCollam of @cestlestyle_ gets the inside scoop about what separates them from the rest.

Q: What inspired you to create swimwear?

VDM THE LABEL, was founded on the grounds of wanting to create designer swimwear that was affordable and empowered woman of all body types and sizes to feel confident in their bodies while helping the environment at the same time. We have always loved swimwear and the summer memories that associated with your favorite bikinis. The fashion industry for a long time now has been having a negative impact of the environment and we therefore wanted to be part of the solution and not the problem.

We are now a team of passionate forward thinkers, who believe in quality, sustainability and ethical trade. We at VDM The Label are rethinking the way women are approaching the traditional swimsuit – existing to allow women to experience the beauty of wearing designer swimwear, at a fraction of the price

Allanah is the designer at VDM THE LABEL. She designs all the swimwear in house in Australia and oversees all technical processes involved in the end to end production.

Q: Being an eco-friendly swimwear brand is very unique and certainly puts you a step ahead. Do you see this being an upcoming trend in the market?

Sustainability and eco-fashion is not necessarily new concept, however we really hope that the awareness continues to grow, as together we can all help to make a difference. We think as a brand we need to be consciously aware of our role in global warming, pollution and landfill. We have made it our mission and objective before even starting to design tour first collection as we wanted to part change. The solutions are out there and we will continue to help drive this message.

We believe strongly that consumers want to make a change and the acceptance is defiantly growing as shoppers are becoming more aware of how their choices can impact the rest of the world, the environment and the oceans we love. We think the major factor that makes people choose to not be sustainable is that they pick the cheaper price. Fast fashion produces cheaper prices but the cost is a lot more than money. It often means poor quality, cheap labor and a huge negative impact long term on the environment. We think people want to change and be sustainable, it’s just a matter of showing them that there are alternative options.

Q: What inspires your collections and this one specifically?

As we only launched only 6 months ago, this is our first collection- it is a modern interpretation of the decades that have helped shape the swimwear industry into what it is today.

Much of our inspiration also comes from a mixture of street trend as well as couture. However, we also take much of our inspiration from the everyday woman, wanting to create styles that empower her to feel confident and feel her best. Our VDM girls are very important to us, and are always the main focus when creating new designs and collections.

Q: Which direction do you see VDM evolving in the near future?

In terms of design The new collection is taking inspiration from emerging influences from the late 1980-1990’s. Expect to see bright pops of color, and daring silhouettes. We will continue to research and develop new ways of sustainability and help to drive our message – #sustainablewithVDMthelabel

Interview With Free Bella | Miami Swim Week

Interview With Free Bella

Represented by The Riviere Agency.

Designed and manufactured in downtown Los Angeles, Free Bella creates kickass bikinis that won’t kick the planet. Free Bella is a new way of thinking about fashion – because they believe in making a difference while still looking fly at the same time. They source low-impact, sustainable materials, while implementing earth friendly practices throughout their supply chain to ensure minimal impact on Mother Nature.

Writer and fashion influencer Kyleigh McCollam of @cestlestyle_ was interested in learning more about Free Bella’s sustainability approach to design and production. I think we can all agree this practice is something that should be implemented into more brands going forward. After all, saving the planet is cool!

Free Bella: Miami Swim Week

[portfolio_slideshow id=61314 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Q: What makes Free Bella a sustainable brand?

Soon after I started the brand, I realized it actually wasn’t an option for us to not be sustainable. We know way too much about the threats the fashion industry poses to the earth and there are just too many alternative resources available. We use a recycled polyester which is made from recycled PET bottles. So instead of all those plastic bottles being sent to the landfill to rot and release dangerous chemicals, we make them into cute swimsuits. We also use a regenerated nylon fiber from post-consumer materials like fishing nets and other waste materials found in our oceans. Our packaging is totally earth-friendly too. It’s made from 100% recycled materials and is also biodegradable. We’ve started to play around with Deadstock fabrics also as we explore the idea of expanding and creating coverups and resort wear. These are the surplus fabrics from other fashion brands that order in excess. Most of the time they just end up collecting dust on factory floors before headed to a landfill. So why not give them a second life?

Q: Does being a sustainable have its challenges over being non-sustainable and how do you overcome them?

It definitely does. You are limited in comparison to non-sustainable brands because we just don’t have access to the amount of resources that they do. If we like a fabric because of how it feels or functions, but it isn’t sustainable, then we’re not going to use it. End of story. So it requires us to think outside the box creatively to create items that still put us on the map with the competition, but are also easy on mother nature at the same time. Find you a brand that can do both ladies and gents.

Q: What inspired this collection?

With this collection, I was really inspired by vintage cuts and bold prints. There’s an element of ease and cool from the past that leaves a lot of room for modern interpretation. I looked back through a ton of magazine issues from Cosmo and Elle in the late 70s & 80s and drew a lot of inspiration from the swimwear spreads and the bold supermodels of that time. They were just so fearless. And I wanted that to set the mood for the collection.

Q: Who is the ultimate Free Bella woman and what does she stand for?

Straight to the point, the Free Bella woman gives a sh*t. She’s not cool with buying into trends if it means sacrificing the health of the planet. She’s empowered and she makes empowered decisions. But she’s also multifaceted. She’ll get her babes together for a boozy night of dancing, and she’ll also be the one to drag them out of bed the next day to a beach cleanup. That’s our girl.

[portfolio_slideshow id=61341 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Q: Your swimsuits are only solid colors. Do you plan on incorporating prints in the future?

We love working with block colours and textured fabrics, keeping it as minimal and luxe as possible. At this stage we don’t have plans to incorporate prints into our designs however who knows what the future will hold!

Q: As a new brand launching in 2015, what challenges have you faced?

The strong competition within the swimwear industry was initially a challenge for us as a new brand. Competing in such a saturated market has motivated us to differentiate ourself and stand out amongst the crowd. We’ve overcome this through focusing on our designs and the quality of our swimsuits as well as ensuring that the customer is the focus of all practices.

Q: Describe your creative process.

We gain a lot of our inspiration from 80s and 90s fashion and we combine this with contemporary trends and customer demands when creating new designs.

Q: How do you want women to feel when they wear your swimsuits?

Our suits are designed to empower women to feel confident in their own skin.

CENTRESTAGE ELITES Spotlights Asia’s Talented Designers

On 5 September, the glamorous opening gala show CENTRESTAGE ELITES will present SS19 collections from three celebrated designers in Asia, namely HiromichiOchiai of FACETASM (Japan), Cyrus Wong and Julio Ng of IDISM (Hong Kong) and Min Liu of Ms MIN (Chinese mainland).

HiromichiOchiai, designer for hot Japanese fashion label FACETASM, will present at Hong Kong’s runway. The name FACETASM comes from the word “facet”, implying that each piece has different sides or different meanings. The brand believes in discovering new perspectives and embracing new challenges while not sticking to the rules. Mr Ochiai was elected for the finalist at LVMH Prize in 2016 and finalist at ANDAM Prize in 2018.

Representing the cream of the crop of local design talent, Hong Kong-based Cyrus Wong and Julio Ng co-founded IDISM in 2016. With a hint of surprise juxtaposing the label’s elegantly minimal aesthetic, IDISM was created for the spontaneous lifestyle of the contemporary city woman. The label was selected as one of Vogue’s Talents in 2017, while also being named “The future of Asia” by China’s youthful media powerhouse, YOHO!, during the same year.

Representative from the Chinese mainland is Ms Min by Min Liu, who is one of the brightest stars in China’s flourishing fashion scene. The word “Ms” combines “Mrs” and “Miss”, a modern salutation representing an independent woman. “Simplicity with a twist, romanticism with an edge, modernity with classicism” are the brand’s DNA. Ms Liu was shortlisted for the prestigious LVMH Prize in 2016, and Ms MIN has become a highly sought-after label with top-tier retailers such as Lane Crawford, Opening Ceremony and Saks Fifth Avenue stocking its collections.

A Salute to American Made Beauty

Beauty Products You Can Use All Year Round…And Support American Made Products While You’re At It

A
s America’s favorite month winds down, the enthusiasm for a particular patriotism wears off as we save up for the next time we have to muster that frantic pride. There is however, a way to keep up a certain consciousness for a kind of patriotism that actually does something beyond setting off explosions.

What’s more American than supporting American industry? Actually sending labor overseas might have been more of our vibe in recent decades, but everyone loves a good reboot. Presenting a guide to supporting American-made goods in the remainder of the year—for your reference.

for your nails…

Fortunately Tran Wills wondered the same when she went to get her last pedicure before giving birth to her fourth child and brought us a collection of nail polish as well as the first non-toxic nail salon in Denver.

Delight in the selection of hues that stretches from sea to shining sea and enjoy a manicure that you can know is USA-made, non-toxic, cruelty-free, vegan, and hand poured.

The Wave Spray is legendary among beauty enthusiasts. Especially for the volume-challenged, it’s worth the plunge.

for your skin…

Derma-E's Deluxe Peptides and Collagen Serum
Derma-E’s Deluxe Peptides and Collagen Serum

DERMA-E
Born in a health food store in Southern California, Derma-E has grown to be one of the largest natural and US made facial care brands around. Their products are all about straight-forward simplicity and efficacy, so you can rely on them for results instead of flowery jargon. 100% vegan, cruelty-free, free of parabens, mineral oil, gluten, soy, and GMOs; this brand is serious about its commitment to natural skincare.

Worried about the effects of summer sun on your skin, or all year round for that matter? The Advanced Peptide and Collagen Serum is the kind of product that will help smoothen the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. For those with notoriously dry skin, this is a double win.

for your vanity…

Humans of Fashion Foundation Launches App to Stop Sexual Harrassment

0

When Actions Speak Louder Than Words

The beauties and brains behind the Humans of Fashion Foundation, Antoniette Costa and Kristina Romanova, are making moves post-#MeToo movement.

Antoniette, a lawyer and Kristina, a model, have teamed up to create an app that will help individuals who so desperately need it. The Foundation understands that not just models, but stylists, photographers, interns, editors, and even executives, face discrimination, harassment, and assault everyday in the fashion and beauty industry.

Due to certain stigmas associated with speaking up, certain laws (that are slowly being overturned), and downright fear of being blackmailed in a professional capacity, many of these individuals feel they have no recourse when troubling situations arise during work.

Moreover, there are individuals who are unaware of just what constitutes illegal or unacceptable behavior at work, and have no unbiased third-party to turn to for clarification or advice.

A void that the entire world has shed light on in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, these women developed an app that seeks to address and remedy these problems. The app works like this: an individual who wishes to speak to someone regarding harassment or other issues can enter an alias name as well as whether they are seeking a therapist, a lawyer, or other professional.

the app seeks to address and remedy these problems

The individual will have to answer certain questions on the app related to their specific situation(s), including date of incident, a description of the event, and other confidential information. As such, the app will be subject to, and will follow, all current data privacy rules and regulations. With this information, the app should be able to vet an individual’s request and pair them with a professional apt to help them. Once that pairing occurs, however, the relationship remains off the app.

The app is a step toward making actual change in a whirlwind of talks to make change. Hopefully, once launched, the app will provide the source of help that many individuals in this industry need and have been asking for.

If interested in volunteering or helping out in any way, contact the Foundation at humans@humansoffashion.org.

Through engaging the local community in the creation of a work of art she builds on her previous experience as a youth arts producer at London’s iconic Roundhouse.
