Lina Cardona, An Inspiration for Aspiring Models

Lina Cardona, An Inspiration for Aspiring Models

It’s said a modeling career demands great persistence and determination. And while it’s true the main way to enter the industry is “good looks” (or a “good look”: style, attitude, etc.), to keep current in the business takes work hard. One personality who’s been “acing” the modeling industry with her excellent survival tactics and relentless dedication is Colombian model and actress Lina Cardona (@linacardona41).

Lina is an entity to look out for in the Colombian fashion industry, and has been the face of prestigious international brands including Renault, Telmex, Aguila Beer, Claro, Ego, 4-72, and many more. This kind-hearted individual was generous enough to spare some time from her busy schedule to answer some questions to inspire and guide others looking to create a similar career.

Q: How did you get started in the industry?

My journey as a model began when I signed up for “Señorita Bogota in 2013.” It was my first experience as a professional model, something I would cherish for the rest of my life. I did not win the competition, but successfully managed to secure the semifinalist position, which was a huge deal. As a newcomer, I was extremely satisfied with what I had achieved and was determined to perform better next time.

After my first public appearance in the show, many fashion houses, magazines, designers, and brand owners approached me to model for their brands. I enjoyed the new fame and attention I was getting but did not deviate from my goal. I had already planned my next move.

I had already planned my next move.

In 2014 I participated in “Colombia’s Next Top Model,” which is the Colombian version of “America’s Next Top Model.” The show is internationally recognized, and the stakes were high. I secured the position of the second finalist and was very happy with my gain.

Participating in this contest opened the doors to new opportunities. My confidence in my work had been boosted, which motivated me to appear in more TV shows like “La Reina del Flow” and “Operacion Pacifico.”

2014 was a good year for my professional life as I was selected to be one of the “Chica Aguila.”

Q: How would you describe your life as a model?

Life as a model is not as easy as it looks. I know the movies and the media always portray the glamourous and fun sides, but there’s a lot more no one knows about.

Being a model is not simple. My life underwent a drastic change when I transitioned to this field. My entire routine had to be changed; I had to give up many habits in order to keep myself fit and relevant for the field.

Waking up before sunrise, daily workouts, healthy eating habits, keeping up with the hectic schedule, taking out time for myself amidst the hustle and bustle, not giving in to temptations, keeping myself away from picking up bad habits, and most of all, keeping myself sane!

Waking up before sunrise, daily workouts, keeping up with the hectic schedule …

Q: How difficult do you think it is to survive in the fashion industry?

Oh, it’s not easy at all. But if you are determined to stay and make it to the top, then as they say, “when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it.”

Learn to grab every opportunity you are offered because offers in this industry come to only a few lucky ones. Adopt the right attitude for work.

Adopt the right attitude for work

Maintain a strong work ethic; although this industry does not follow one, ensure you do. It reflects your professional personality and makes you come off as a strong individual. Most importantly, give each project your best shot; you never know what the future holds for you, so make every move count.

Q: Tell us about your fitness regime. What’s the secret?

Balance is the key. It took me a long time to sort things in life and learn about maintaining a balance in everything. Everything needs to be done in proper proportions: from diet to exercise and work-life to leisure hours. Remember, excess of anything isn’t good, so refrain from such activities.

My routine includes a healthy diet, yoga sessions in the mornings, a simple gym workout, plenty of water, and sleep.

Never compromise on sleep. You don’t want to look exhausted the next day.

Q: What do you think about the growing Instagram fashion community? Is it affecting the career of ramp models?

Interesting question. I believe that the Instagram fashion community is a quickly emerging fashion portal. I see it as a great place to find opportunities. Although it is very different from the “real” fashion industry, it is, to some extent, similar to its practices.

The Instagram fashion community has proven itself to be the best place to introduce your unique fashion sense and create an online portfolio to keep update frequently.

Instagram is the best place to introduce your unique fashion sense

Walking hand in hand with technology is the need of the hour. Having a social presence is a must to survive in this technologically driven world. Recognizing its importance and need, I have an account on Instagram too and have recently gotten it verified.

Q: Do you have a piece of advice for aspiring models?

Nelson Mandala said, and I quote, “I never lose. I either win or learn.”

One thing I would like to tell all aspiring models is to never give up. The road maybe difficult and bumpy at times, but always keep doing your best. You will succeed; maybe not today, but tomorrow.

5 Modeling Hacks For A Perfect Runway Show

0

Fashion week is right along the corner. You’ve been hired as a model, and you’re expected to be at your best — which means you’ve got to be spotless, fit, glamorous, and ready for the runway.

But preparing for the job can be so stressful, and stress is exactly the counterproductive thing that could ruin your time on the catwalk. Thankfully, lots of models have shared their hot tips and tricks, hacks, and special recommendations for anybody who needs it, which makes preparing for the perfect runway show manageable and easy.

Model getting a touch up
Modeling 101: Strutting The Runway

Modeling isn’t always about the luxurious and glamorous lifestyle. The key is maintaining your strut and poise while making sure you remain on top of your game down every runway you walk on. In case you’re up for some new modeling hacks to try, here are some that might be of help:

1. Work With Your Body

A model’s glory is in their body’s beauty. After all, it’s what got them the job. Working with your body is a constant process all models have to deal with at every step of their careers. And nothing beats someone who fully understands their body.

Knowing your body means knowing where your best assets are. Inversely, it also means knowing where you need to pay extra attention to. Sometimes, designers would want to figure out how to work with your natural assets.

Hacks that deal with this exist in the form of special products that help most models. For example, models with big busts ought to have their minimizer bras ready (or, for the opposite case, push-up bras). You can also have your favorite shaving tool ready on the go. Or your staple nude underwear safely stashed in your favorite pouch.

2. Try 24K Masks

It’s not a secret of the trade that 24k masks are skin treatments models do a week or a day before the show. It is a long-standing trick that works ever since it gained popularity in the beauty industry.

24k masks offers anti-aging benefits that come with the desired opulent glow on the skin. It prepares the skin for a show by giving it a firm, supple texture, aiding in the brightening of your complexion. It’s what gives most models that clean, vibrant look that makeup can’t simply replicate.

There are tons of variations on the market that serves practical purposes (like peel-off masks and gels). But if you can spare the dollars, the traditional procedure is the best way to do it.

3. Snack Your Way Through The Runway

You’ve probably dieted your way to the night of the show already. But it’s no use keeping yourself thin by eating less (or worse, by starving yourself). You only need to know what to avoid eating before and during the show, to make sure you’re in the best shape.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not snacking that exclusively makes you gain the extra weight. Snacking is what makes the stressful backstage life bearable. When done right, it’d be at no cost to the glam and bam you exude on the ramp.

Carbohydrates and sodium are notorious for making anyone feel bloated, sometimes even lethargic. This is a definite a no-go, especially if you need to be wearing bikinis and lingerie for the show, may it be the New York Fashion Week or the London Fashion Week you’re strutting through. Instead, opt for sugar found in most fruits like apples and bananas.

Liquids also help fill your stomach. Keep yourself hydrated with water. But if you need that extra energy boost (aside from the healthy sugars from fruits), a nice thermos of black coffee could do. Just make sure you use your straws so the lipstick won’t smudge.

4. Natural Is The Way To Go

Given that makeup trends are always changing, it’s quite unarguably true that the natural, nude look will last for a long while. Renowned makeup artists have emphasized beauty in the natural look. They often work to compliment the pieces of clothes you’ll be wearing, or match makeup hues with the natural symmetry of your face. But one hack in the makeup aspect focuses on the importance of the eyes.

Eyes are tricky to color and fill in. But you only have to remember: if you’re interested in incorporating a default model look in your makeup, put the accent to the eyes, and less to the others. Whether it’s dazzling and glittery, smoky, or over-the-top, it’s guaranteed that a good and attentive eye makeup will do the trick.

5. Stick To Your Rituals

The typical regimen never fails. Get your manicure and pedicure done. Ensure you’ve taken care of every spot by doing hair removal treatments. Eat right and exercise so you feel fresh and healthy. Keep a careful track of fitting and dress rehearsal schedules. And practice your signature runway walk.

Every model has a unique way of preparing for runway shows. Appreciating and sticking with the routines that work best for you is probably the best hack anyone can give. This is because not everyone is the same, and there are simply quirky needs that demand specific kinds of attention.

Whatever it is, the perfect runway show will go on. After all, you wouldn’t have been walking down the ramp if you weren’t already capable and alluring.

Conclusion

Being a runway model is no easy feat. It’s definitely a career that a lot of women dream of in their lifetime. You’re already living the dream, so make the best out of it, and make sure you’re giving it your best in every performance. In addition, you can use these modeling hacks to ace your runway show every time.

Shannon Thaler x RNWY

Shannon Thaler was discovered by Marilyn Agency in NYC and immediately booked her first shoot for Seventeen. At 20, she’s already worked with brands such as Tory Burch, Rebecca Minkoff, Stuart Weitzman, Reebok, Sally Hansen, Pat McGrath, and modeled in exciting and exotic locations from Miami to Tokyo.

She’s also the force behind The Cutie Foodie (@the_cutiefoodie), looking to inspire others to recover from digestive and gastrointestinal issues while pursuing a healthy diet, lifestyle, and positive attitude.

About Shannon Thaler

I have loved performing arts my entire life, beginning at age 3 in my local dance studio. In high school, I attended the Freehold Performing Arts Center at Howell High School where I studied dance, sang in chorus, and participated in the school musical.

I studied dance and sang in chorus

Outside of school, I was an apprentice on the New Jersey Tap Ensemble and by my junior year, was performing as a company member. I loved spending summers at Radio City where I auditioned, and was so fortunate to have been selected to participate in the Rockette Summer Intensive and perform the Christmas Spectacular.

While still in high school, I was approached to model and sign with Marilyn Agency in NYC, and about a month later I booked my first job and appeared in Seventeen Magazine!

I was approached to model and a month later I booked my first job in Seventeen Magazine

After graduating, I decided to take a gap year to pursue modeling full-time, starting with Miami Swim Week and NYFW, going on to work with brands such as Tory Burch, Rebecca Minkoff, Stuart Weitzman, Reebok, Sally Hansen, Pat McGrath, and more!

Most recently, I appeared on my first cover for Bridal Guide Magazine! I also received opportunities to travel within and outside of the U.S., even living and working in Tokyo, Japan, where a highlight thus far was definitely walking for Louis Vuitton.

I recently appeared on my first cover for Bridal Guide Magazine

Along with the jobs, modeling has also given me an unparalleled independence and work ethic, as well as amazing experiences and friendships I will cherish forever!

But it was also during my travels that I began to notice major problems with my digestion that not only bothered me on the inside, but showed on the outside. Upon returning to the U.S., I was diagnosed with SIBO, a bacterial overgrowth in the gut, which can be cured through a specific diet.

I began to notice major problems with my digestion

I was determined to heal from the inside out and make that diet a lifestyle. I became passionate about all things health and wellness, leading me to start The Cutie Foodie (@the_cutiefoodie) in 2018, a blog and Instagram page created to share my experience healing my gut through food, fitness, and a positive mind.

My passion for health and wellness led to The Cutie Foodie

As I continued to travel, it became a creative outlet that allowed me to not only share tips about maintaining a healthy lifestyle while traveling or just living life, but also to connect with others and create a positive space.

As someone who has always loved learning, I enrolled in Penn State’s World Campus a year after high school, where I continue to model while also obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Digital Journalism and Media.

I’m working toward my Bachelor’s in Digital Journalism and Media

Currently, I am still pursuing my degree, jumping rope to stay active, and cooking for my family in my free time! I truly could not have done anything without my second family at Marilyn, but especially not with my hero — my mom — or my brother, Ryan!

Josie Canseco x FTL Moda for FWO

Josie Canseco is a complex person. Brimming with enthusiasm, streams of information and ideas tumble effortlessly from a mind that seems capable of running quickly without breaking a sweat. Whether discussing sports, dance, the pluses and minuses of city life, the benefits and pitfalls of the entertainment industry, or her “dream life” caring for animals in Montana, her passion and intellect are palpable. She’s also refreshingly approachable. (“I’m a hugger,” she says.)

We had the pleasure of working with Josie as part of an exclusive shoot for FWO’s RNWY digital edition. The editorial was produced by FTL Moda (@ftlmoda), and shot by Hannah Khymych @hannahkhymych.

Interview by FTL Moda

Q: Josie is for Josephine, right? Tell us about your origins. We know you’re partially Cuban. Do you feel that heritage in your personality?

My birth certificate only says “Josie,” but growing up I was called “Josephina” by the Cuban side of my family.

My father’s family is Cuban, with a slight mix of Filipino. I’m definitely in touch with my Latin roots, whether it be through dance or my immediate connection with the Spanish language.

I am definitely in touch with my Latin roots, via dance and the Spanish language

I was raised in the United States, so I’m not as connected with my Latin side as I would like.

However, I plan to travel to Cuba with my family within the next year to learn more about our culture.

Josie Canseco BTS by Pablo Starr

Q: You’re the daughter of two artists, in terms of industries: your father being from the sports world and your mom from the modeling world. How have their backgrounds influenced your career?

Being raised in the industry has definitely taught me a lot about my communications skills and work ethic.

Having parents like them to look up to has done nothing but inspire me to be the best I can be, and to also be kind and patient with my success.

My parents have inspired me to be kind and patient

Whether it’s learning from their accomplishments, or failures, I am grateful to have been raised with them as my family.

Q: We’ve had the pleasure of working with you a few times already, and we’re always impressed by your easy-going attitude, and kind attention to the entire team. This should be natural for professionals in general (as well as for humans in general). Why do you think this is not always the case?

Everyone is going through their own issues that people aren’t aware of.

Everyone is going through issues people aren’t aware of

Sometimes you just are not in a good mood, and that’s okay, but it is extremely important to keep it as professional as possible when you are in your work environment.

I am no angel; I have definitely had my bad days, but I am so incredibly blessed to do what I do, and whenever I feel a bit frustrated or impatient, I remind myself of the opportunity I have in front of me, and it helps to refresh my perspective.

Q: You are with NEXT Management, one of the most recognized fashion agencies in the world. How has this affiliation choice impacted your career, and your approach to this industry?

I have been with NEXT since I was 17, and I have constantly grown closer and closer to them as an agency and as a family.

As much as it is business, your agents are there to protect you. It is impossible to not become as close as family when you have to be so vulnerable and honest about everything going on in your life.

I stand by loyalty, and NEXT has stood by me through SO many ups and downs, so I plan to stick by them as well.

They have taught me respect, patience, and most importantly, discipline.

NEXT has taught me respect, patience, and discipline

So I bring that to the table in my work life.

Q: Traveling is a big part of your career. How do you manage to keep balance between your schedule and your personal life?

I do travel quite a bit. I would say I’m on a plane at least once a week.

I’m on a plane at least once a week

It gets a bit tough to balance both. I have definitely seen a few friendships fizzle out because of lack of upkeep, but I do my best to keep my original core group of friends close at all times.

I hang around the people I’ve been around since I was 14, and our friendship is so strong that no matter how long we are apart for, whenever we’re reunited, it is like we never separated.

Those are the kinds of friendships I appreciate most in my life.

Q: Do you have a source of inspiration for your career? If so, may we ask which one?

I would say my main source of inspiration is stability, and being able to support my family one day.

It is extremely important to me that I am able to support myself and have control over my own life. I never want to depend on anyone else for what I need, and that keeps me hungry for work.

I never want to depend on anyone else

I also have dreams and goals that I am so passionate about, and if I want to reach them, I need to stay focused and motivated.

Q: Who is your favorite designer?

I am not a huge “fashion” girl, but if I had to say any designer I think it would be Alexander Wang.

I grew up playing sports and to me, nothing is better than comfort.

I grew up playing sports

Alexander Wang has a subtle mix of comfortable casual pieces that are also chic and sexy.

Q: Let’s get personal: What are you looking to achieve in the next couple of years, both professionally and personally?

So I just read The Alchemist, and it’s helped refresh my perspective on life a ton.

I am already a firm believer of fate and the Law of Attraction, but reading this book really put my mind back on track to focus on what I truly want in this world. It is very easy to get distracted and lose sight of what makes you happy, and this book was my way of getting back on track.

I am a firm believer in the Law of Attraction

I hope in next few years to start my own non-profit for neglected and abused animals, and hopefully by the time I am 30, I will own a ranch in Montana where I take care of animals.

I do not think I am cut out for this city life forever, so I plan to work as hard as possible and then find another environment that makes me happy.

I want to start a non-profit for neglected and abused animals

Q: If you were not a model, what is another career you feel would have been yours?

I would have either been an athlete or a dancer.

I did both sports and dance my entire life, competitively and passionately.

My dad always pushed me to play golf or tennis, but dancing was something I loved more.

Q: If you could close your eyes to a wish, what would you like to re-open them to?

More acts of kindness from people and no more animal cruelty.

“I like to read a lot and always something different. Favorites include Nassim Taleb. My dream is to write a book … which I am doing at the moment.
