Chinese Independent Designer Label i-am-chen Makes New York Fashion Week Debut

Following 3 successful seasons at London Fashion Week, Chinese independent designer label i-am-chen makes its debut at New York Fashion Week

Represented by Rep Agency.

Knits have been a predominant part of i-am-chen since its launch in 2017. Creative director Zhi Chen’s visual language is deep rooted in color perception. By mixing “bold colors, relaxed mood and pleasant delight” Zhi built a strong identity for i-am-chen resonating with independent, confident, intelligent, curious women who cultivate a childlike mind.

When creating its Spring/Summer 2020 collection, Chen looked at the work of photographer Kourtney Roy and her perspective on passion and freedom. While bold colors, delicate details and concise cuttings relate to a passionate approach to life, a new fresh color collision of rose and gray, combined with olive green and light iris purple shows a newly found freedom in “equilibrium”.

Zhi Chen and her team have always believed that the real innovation of fashion is intertwined with technology. While knitting has been i-am-chen’s favored tool of expression to date, and in the spirit of never stopping to challenge itself, i-am-chen introduces woven products for the first time. It paired silk knitting tops with tailored dresses, and enveloped colorful striped knitting dresses with concise woven coats.

i-am-chen finds elegance in past memories and empowers it with bright personalized colors. Kourtney Roy depicts that moment when women look at life with a fresh eye. Both capture that distinctive change modern women stand for. The brand’s narrative has been consistent since its launch, it strongly believes that life should be conducted with brightness and elegance.

The latest i-am-chen Spring/Summer 2020 collection showcases the originality of Chinese designers, and how the Chinese youth is looking at women’s issues from a contemporary perspective.

i-am-chen, Tmall and New York Fashion Week join forces to launch “CHINA COOL”. They express together their understanding of “CHINA COOL” around the theme “Cross Forward, Design Forward and Trend Forward”, and offer their own interpretation on being new, being pioneers and never stop marching forward. These three key ideas are also the driving forces of Tmall who is actively building its presence in the global fashion market by promoting a fashion incubation platform and seeking suitable partners among fashion brands. During New York Fashion Week, i-am-chen is simultaneously launching its SS2019 collection on Tmall. Open the Tmall APP and type in “LABELHOOD flagship store” to access pieces brought to you straight from the runway.

About i-am-chen

i-am-chen was founded in 2017 by Zhi Chen. Zhi graduated from the London College of Fashion with a master’s degree in fashion design and technology. She aims to challenge the definition of knitting by exploiting the potentials of advanced machines, apply state-of-art techniques and use unconventional yarns. In today’s fashion world, obsessed with imposing solemn concepts on clothing, designer Zhi Chen turns to the playfulness and cheerfulness often embodied by the art works of Alexander Calder and David Hockney.

Upon graduation, Zhi Chen was commissioned by the MoMA to create a pencil skirt for its special Fashion exhibition: . She is also the Fashion Scout SS19 Merit Award winner, the 2017 polish Łodź Young Fashion Award winner, the 2018 Shanghai Fashion Week Business Potential Award winner, and a 2018/2019 International Woolmark Prize finalist. The London Design Museum documented i-am-chen’s SS2019 collection. The i-am-chen can now be found in over 50 stores worldwide, including Browns Fashion, Lane Crawford, Farfetch, Shopbob and Machine-A.
