University of Westminster Fall 2018: London Fashion Week

University of Westminster London Fashion Week FW18

University of Westminster graduates from the Fashion Design BA Honors course showed their graduate collections. The show was historic in two ways. It was the first time an undergraduate collection has featured on the official London Fashion Week schedule. The innovation has synchronized the course work and business calendar, explained course Director Andrew Groves. Secondly, it drew heavily on fashion history, especially the 1960s to 1980s.

Megan Williams literally launched the show, with her handsome collection of spacemen, all very Major Tom, a little warning of the David Bowie metallic look to come in this show with Lauren Audrey’s 1970s Glam Rock extravaganza, featuring glitter, sequins and bright colors. She captures the 60s morphing into 70s and beyond, with coats of many colors and thigh-high silver boots.

lso hitting on the 70s morphing into the 80s were Holly Priestley’s striped and floral cropped trousers. Manon Planche plunged into a multi-color array of metallic cropped jackets and mini dresses.

The glitter alternated with other looks. A pleasant contrast was Catriona Wilson’s silks and slips, using a nude palette and highlighting feminine beauty. These contrasted with the darker looks of designers like William Dill-Russell and his dramatic collection of full-length gowns and coats.

The show ended with Paolo Carzana’s wonderfully over-the-top collection using over-seize garments on coat hangers and easels adding a multi-dimensional dress look. The models had to negotiate their exit carefully, bringing to mind London Underground’s famous “mind the doors!”
