Heavenly Doggies: Anthony Rubio’s Met Gala Tribute in Canine Couture

Raising the Woof

We’ve been watching “canine couturier” Anthony Rubio for some time, and this was just too good to keep to ourselves.

In Rubio’s tribute to Heavenly Bodies, the recent Met show (and the theme of the Met Gala earlier this month, expertly organized by the beautiful Eaddy Kiernan), Rubio creates some venerable vêtements around the theme, and it’s just a lot of fun to see in action.

Heavenly Doggies

[portfolio_slideshow id=57402 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Says Rubio: “Each year as soon as the announcements are made pertaining to the selected theme of the much-anticipated Met Gala, I begin researching and sketching … to decide how to execute my own renditions for dogs. Last year my designs were featured in world-renowned high fashion publications so, of course I went right to work on this year’s theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

“The subject matter offered a plethora of inspirations as done by some of the greatest fashion designers of our times. I spared no expense on materials I chose, including crystal-encrusted chainmail. I toiled and strategized for each design to produce my master pieces. I worked to recreate some features and reinvented others which were executed meticulously.

I spared no expense on materials I chose, including crystal-encrusted chainmail.

The end products are the following as modeled by my Chihuahua boys Bogie (tri-colored) and Kimba (blonde). I am proud to unveil these and hope that you will appreciate my works and all the work and imagination that went into these.”

Canine Couture Coffee Table Book

Rubio’s team says: “Anthony Rubio’s hard cover coffee table book Canine Couture will feature shelter pets in editorial outfits. The book will consist of grand editorial creations of high fashion, rock/pop stars, iconic red carpet looks, and other themed looks. The book will be a huge 9×12 coffee table book with 250 pages. We have gathered 5 amazing photographers, each with a unique point of view to shoot for the book. The book will consist of 90% new images.”

You can support the book (which also supports pet adoption) here.

Simply Super: Meet Florian Lemberger, Founder of Supercar Owners Circle

0

Super Man: Meet Florian Lemberger

Represented by Guitar PR.

Florian Lemberger is on speeding ahead of the pack. He founded the Supercar Owners Circle (SOC) in 2014 and currently holds the position of Chief Executive Officer.

Florian has a Masters in Law from University of St. Gallen, a Masters in Finance from London Business School and a MAS in Real Estate from University of Zurich.

But how did he come up with the idea for Supercar Owners Circle? And what makes it different? Read on.

Interview with Florian Lemberger

Q: How did you come up with the idea of SOC?

Florian Lemberger_Founder_(1) copyCars were always a passion of mine, and I wanted to share my interest with likeminded people. I organized the first event in Switzerland in 2014, which was neither a Rally nor a Concours, but a unique combination of the two, for both modern and historic supercars. The feedback was very positive, and I quickly realized that there is a demand for events like ours. It was in November 2015, at our first gathering in London, when some of our founding members expressed their wish to transform SOC into a network for car collectors. We really liked the idea, started to build new partnerships, and over the past two years have grown SOC into a global platform for automotive enthusiasts.

it was neither a Rally nor a Concours, but a unique combination of the two

Q: What is the mission of SOC?

Our mission is to establish SOC as the world’s most exclusive network of car collectors and to offer our members a truly unique and unforgettable supercar experience. Organizing events is just one of the many things we do. Thanks to our great partnerships in the industry we can give our members unique insights, provide access to a wide range of money-can’t-buy experiences, and build personal relationships between collectors and manufacturers.

we provide access to money-can’t-buy experiences

Q: What makes SOC different from other automotive clubs?

I think what differentiates us from other automotive clubs is the fact that we set our standards incredibly high from the very beginning. Our events are carefully curated, and we constantly strive to surpass expectations. Because we only admit limited production specials and rare historic cars at our events, we operate in a niche market without many competitors. When it comes to memberships, we are even more selective, and only invite people who have a collection of special cars.

we only admit limited production specials and rare historic cars

octo-tourbillon-saphir-socQ: This partnership with Bvlgari is showing your commitment to a broad lifestyle vision. What does lifestyle mean to you? And what projects do you plan next?

SOC was created for our members. They are the sole reason why our company exists. When negotiating new partnerships, we always put them first. Our new collaboration with Bvlgari and the creation of the Octo Tourbillon Sapphire SOC Watch is a good example. We love to join forces with best in class brands to offer our members something unique, they couldn’t get elsewhere. We have plenty of ideas and plans for the future. Our dream would be to create a limited car for our members, together with one of our automotive partners.

Our dream would be to create a limited car for our members

Q: What is your favorite classic-car?

My favorite classic car is a Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta SWB. It’s an extremely beautiful and very iconic car. On top of that, it’s probably one of the most important GT racers of its time.

Q: What is your favorite hypercar?

That’s a tough question, but I think my favorite hypercar is the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE. It’s basically a Formula 1 car for the road, with an extremely efficient engine. We have a very good relationship with Mercedes-AMG and supported this project from the very beginning. Now I can’t wait until the first cars are delivered and some of our members bring them to our events.

Bvlgari and the Supercars Owners Circle: Excellence and Exclusivity

0

Bvlgari and the Supercars Owners Circle

Represented by Guitar PR .

The Rome-based Maison and the world’s most exclusive network of car collectors share a number of core values: excellence, passion, performance and prestige.

The partnership kicked off on May 5th and 6th 2018 at the Bvlgari Hotel in Milan with the presentation of an equally exceptional watch.

Bvlgari and the Supercars Owners Circle

[portfolio_slideshow id=56821 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Two remarkable signatures in their respective fields of excellence are joining forces in a unique and exclusive relationship. BVLGARI and the Supercar Owners Circle (SOC) have chosen to express their shared values through this partnership signed for an initial three-year duration. The kick-off took place at the prestigious Bvlgari Hotel in Milan on May 5th and 6th 2018 with the presentation of the Octo Tourbillon Sapphire SOC: a watch issued exclusively for “the world’s most discerning car collectors.”

Excellence is the guiding thread uniting the Rome-based Maison and the SOC. While the former is one of the most prestigious luxury brands on the planet, the Supercar Owners Circle encompasses a select group of passionate international devotees and automotive enthusiasts. Their distinguishing feature lies in their ownership of the rarest cars on the market. The SOC philosophy is based on global experience in driving such high-end vehicles and an unrivalled level of service to its members around the world.

Achieving the best is also an integral part of the Bvlgari attitude, and this partnership with the SOC was a natural choice, sealed by the creation of a truly unique timepiece: the Octo Tourbillon Sapphire SOC.

Fired by the same spirit, this exclusive, contemporary, technological yet truly timeless watch reflects SOC members’ passion for standout cars. The sapphire case middle, rimmed by DLC- coated titanium, entirely reveals the movement equipped with a tourbillon. The time is displayed on hour-markers made of 18K yellow gold, as too are the lateral tubes visible through the sapphire crystal, the power-reserve indicator, and the crown adorned with the SOC logo. This creation was introduced at the May 5th Gala Dinner held at the Bvlgari Hotel. The next day, the supercars taking part in the event paraded through the Lombardian city in a police convoy before heading off to visit one of the largest existing private collections of exceptional cars, owned by an SOC member.

Bvlgari’s next rendezvous with the Supercar Owners Circle will take place in the United Kingdom on June 4th 2018 at the historic Goodwood Circuit, in Switzerland on September 1st 2018 and in Dubai on December 2nd 2018 to celebrate the UAE’s 47th National Day.

Four Roses Bourbon Derby Party

Four Roses Bourbon Derby Party

Represented by The Baddish Group.

Last weekend, FWO headed downtown to Mulberry Street to attend an exclusive Derby viewing party, hosted by one of our favorites, Four Roses Bourbon.

In between the bustling sidewalk café tables of Little Italy, we found a small elevator that would lead us up into the space occupied by The Kitchen Table. The Kitchen Table, we learned, can be reserved for private events, with an open concept kitchen and seating up to 26 people.

Four Roses Bourbon Derby Party

[portfolio_slideshow id=56967 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

We sauntered over to the bar to grab our first sip of summer – the mint julep – made with Four Roses Bourbon.

If you’ve never tried Four Roses Bourbon before, you need to. As much thought and science goes into make a batch of bourbon as it does wine, and that level of appreciation is palpable (in a good way!).

Brent Elliott, who has a degree in Chemistry, is Four Roses’ Master Distiller. We caught him at the Derby party, veraciously sparking conversation with guests and explaining the joys he has in working for this company. Ensuring consistent quality goes into every bottle, he assured me he has mastered how to taste without actually drinking, “though sometimes it’s so good you just have to swallow the bourbon!” Showcased were three bourbons, Four Roses Single Barrel, Four Roses Small Batch, and Four Roses Bourbon. The beautiful gold color comes from the American oak barrels, which are used only once, for optimum taste and color. Also on display was Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch 2016. We were told this bourbon contained notes of sweet cherry and green apples, as well as sweetness reminiscent of pepper spices and crème brûlée, so naturally we had to try it… and we loved it.

If you thought bourbon could not be refreshing, think again, and try one of these amazing recipes next time you host this summer.

Mint Julep

2 oz Four Roses Bourbon
.25 oz Demerara syrup
8 mint leaves

Peach Punch

32 oz black tea
16 oz Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon
32 oz Four Roses Bourbon
4 oz Peach Brandy
16 oz Perfect Puree White Peach
2 oz Angostura bitters
Lemon Oleo (8 oz sugar, 8 oz lemon juice, peels of lemons)

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

She deserves the world; in fact, she gave you the world, your life, and anything you ever needed. She’s your mother.

It’s impossible to think of what you could give back to her! At FWO, we thought long and hard about the things moms not only want, but also what they might need (and yes, sometimes it feels like you need a face mask.)

Without further ado: a list that will help you give your mother an excellent gift or, at least, point you in the right direction:

For the soul…

1.) “The Female Persuasion” by Meg Wolitzer

Wolitzer’s ninth novel echoes the relationships between a lot of mothers and daughters. It highlights the disconnect between generations of feminism as their ideologies shift between the old guard and the new. It’s a tale of female mentorship, not unlike the kind between mother and daughter. And, at the end of the day, it’s another feminist novel that exists in a particular moment of the movement’s development. Help your mother shine at book club with this gem.

2.) Boy Smells Candle in June’s

Described as “the embodiment of ease and sophistication”, this particular candle has a bit of French sophisticate and a dash of summer nights. Notes of cassis, bergamot, anise, daffodil, and tonka make for a delightful layer of sweet and spice. It’s for the well-traveled mom who reminisces post-dinner, spinning tales by candlelight that you delight in hearing.

[portfolio_slideshow id=56763 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

3.) Lizzie Fortunato Earrings

We’ve chosen two gorgeous and classic pairs of earrings that while simple, add a whimsical beauty to your mom’s ensembles. With tortoiseshell hoops hanging from angelite trillion stone posts, the Sunset Hoops are as classic as the treasures in your mother’s closet. The Paper White Reflection earrings are delicate and feminine, for the mother that arranges flowers in the house and possesses impeccable taste.Yes they’re a bit luxurious, but you know she won’t buy them for herself, so somebody has to!

For skin…

1) Skin Owl Geranium Beauty Drops and Beauty Steam in Marigold Glow

Aging gracefully is no simple task, but this hydrating oil could help! With raw organic and unrefined Argania Spinosa Extract as well as Rose Geranium Oil, this is a facial oil your mom can feel good about. To treat your mom to a bit of extra luxury, throw in Skin Owl’s Beauty Steam and she can relax while opening her pores after a long day of being an amazing woman.

[portfolio_slideshow id=56783 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

2) Peter Thomas Roth Rose Stem Cell Bio-Repair Gel Mask

Using “cutting-edge plant biotechnology” this cooling and vitalizing mask is chock full of rose plant stem cells and rose extracts. It’s better than giving your mom an entire bouquet of roses, it’s the gift of a soft, glowing, and youthful face!

[portfolio_slideshow id=56766 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

3) Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Set

In this special Mother’s Day kit, Glow Recipe includes a full-sized Watermelon Glow Pink Juice Moisturizer with oil-free, non-clogging hydration and a mini Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask that’s gentle on your mom’s skin while she sleeps. It’s that extra bit of relaxation in the evening that results in some seriously soft and glowing skin in the morning.

4) Patyka Youthful Eye Cream

Ah, eye creams. We go through so many of them to find the right one. Your mother is probably tired of trying dozens, so give her the gift of non-toxic anti-aging skincare. This formula is light and brightening, not dense like other variations and it’s sure to stick around on her skincare shelf.

5) French Girl Sea Polish

Mothers are quite busy. The last thing they need is a complicated beauty routine. The way of the French woman is as effortless and effective as it gets, so do your mom a solid and get her some French Girl Beauty goodies. The Sea Polish in Rose Verveine will add some opulence to her bath or shower. Trop facile!

For beauty…

1) Kosas Saturate + Illuminate Powder in Contrachromatic

This bronzing duo helps your mom get her summertime glow without the dangers that sun exposure brings with it. A peachy blush warms up her cheeks or defines her cheekbones, while the illuminating powder is the subtle and sophisticated highlight every woman needs. Plus it’s all made with safe ingredients fit for healthy skin.

2) Base Coat Nail Polish in Flora

8-free, organic, vegan, and cruelty-free, Base Coat polishes are safe for children, grandchildren, pets, family dinners, and more. In this springy and happy hue titled Flora, it’s likely to bring a smile to your mom’s face and everyone else’s too!

3) Lakur by Londontown Nail Polish in Bell Flower

For the mother with a more subdued palette and a love for clean sophistication, we recommend this dusty rose from Lakur by Londontown. It’s 9-free, cruelty-free, and vegan as well.

4) Milk & Sass Macaron for Hair

Perfectly sized for purses, this adorably shaped brush works for all hair types to quickly detangle and add shine. If this isn’t the cutest convenience ever, we don’t know what is, but we do know that your mom will greatly appreciate it.

Create a bundle for pampering or pick up some earrings for her next night out, with these picks your mother’s sure to feel appreciated.

Go With FWO: A Look at Napa Valley Wines

Time for Wine: A Visit to Napa Valley

In a 1976 wine tasting competition featuring notable French wines and Napa Valley wines, to everyone’s surprise, the Napa Valley wines came out on top.

This was the first time that New World wines had competed – and won – against Old World established wines. It was then that Napa Valley wines were put on the map.

Today, Napa’s wine culture is known around the world. Not only does Napa consistently make some of the most coveted wines, but it is also of interest to scientist. Napa’s climate resembles that of a Mediterranean climate, which only 2% of the world boasts, and is said to enable the highest production of quality wines.

Despite the heartbreaking forest fires that threatened Napa late last year, the region is filled with vibrant greens and rows of promising harvest. Very few wineries suffered damages, though charred trees are still visible off in the distance. Napa was beautiful and thriving and I’d like to share with you my favorite Napa wineries you may not have heard of. So grab a glass of wine and take notes!

SILVERADO VINEYARDS – Best Atmosphere and Hosts

http://www.silveradovineyards.com/

[portfolio_slideshow id=56435 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Founded by Diane Disney of the Walt Disney family, Silverado’s tasting room features a floor to ceiling window showcasing magnificent views of the Stags Leap district. No surprise as to why this winery was already bustling at 10:30 a.m., the tasting room boasts grandiose views of its vineyard and the rolling Napa Valley hills, while a veranda surrounded by a tiered flower wall greets you and offers fresh air. The winery is not only a beautiful oasis, but also home to art, both fine and fun (including prints of Disney characters, like Ratatouille holding a glass of red!). Every detail in this winery was well-thought out, from the fine Portugal cork to hand-picked upholstery in the great hall. Old New York City street cobblestones line the Wine Club terrace ground, and solar panels are used to conserve energy. Silverado wines are given just as much attention to detail, if not more. Comprised of six vineyards, Silverado is able to make a variety of wines each offering a different taste from wine country, including its impressive SOLO Cabernet, which is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The hosts and atmosphere at Silverado will leave you feeling energized and animated, as will its wine.

Must Try: Limited Release 2013 SOLO Cabernet Sav | 2016 Chardonnay

PINE RIDGE VINEYARDS – Best Private Experiences & Caves

https://www.pineridgevineyards.com/

[portfolio_slideshow id=56436 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

The Pine Ridge Estate is nestled between rolling hills right off of the Silverado Trail in the Stags Leap District. Considerate of its effect on the environment, Pine Ridge uses natural means of protecting its grapes and has implemented a drip irrigation system to control water use. If you visit Pine Ridge, do not limit yourself to the tasting room. Though cozy, Pine Ridge shines best in the darkness… of its caves, that is. Enter Cellar 47, a VIP tasting venue carved out of solid rock, complete with relaxing couches, dim-lit lighting, and art. The location is truly unparalleled. Enjoy a guided wine and food tasting with food prepared by their in-house chef and experience what it truly feels like when wine compliments food. As for wines, Pine Ridge creates Cabernet Sauvignon’s from its vineyards in Stags Leap, Howell Mountain, Oakville, and Rutherford, each one encapsulating a different wonder of the Napa Valley. Visiting Pine Ridge gives you the added bonus of trying one of their exclusive wines, which include Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Rosé.

Must Try: 2014 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

DAVIS – Best Architecture

http://www.davisestates.com/

[portfolio_slideshow id=56437 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Located in Calistoga, this family-owned winery should not be undermined. Purchased in 2011 by Mike Davis, the vineyard farms grapes from its vines planted in Calistoga, Rutherford, Carneros, and Howell Mountain, each providing different landscapes and elements of grapes. Designed by Howard Backen, famed architect, Davis’ hospitality center is rustic and modern, with tall ceilings, a commercial kitchen, and outdoor terrace facing west across Napa Valley. If visiting on a rainy day, opt for a food and wine pairing near the fireplace with bites from the Executive Chef. The grounds also feature a completely renovated barn, with fireplaces, plush couches to rest, and large tables for group tastings. While every guest is treated like family, Davis Estate’s exclusive membership club gives you perks that will make you feel like royalty. Centered around the Phase V wines created in limited quantities, all members have access to the Phase V Cave Room, called the Cellarium, which is a cave accessible through state-of-the-art vein recognition and every member’s hand will grant them access. In the center is a glass enclosed room with a large round table and enormous modern chandelier. Davis Estate’s current releases include traditional selections, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but also includes a Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and dessert wines, including late harvest Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc.

Must Try: 2011 Petit Verdot

BRASSWOOD– Best Sensory Experience

https://brasswood.com/

[portfolio_slideshow id=56438 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

From its sensory room to its kitchen and bakery, Brasswoodhas something for all of your senses in one location. Brasswood’s tasting room is beautiful and sleek but if you’re wanting a more intimate setting, head to their cozy Den for a private tasting. While sipping on one of Brasswood’s Coombsville Bordeaux varietals, a roaring fireplace will welcome you and stained wood walls might convince you of a secluded cabin up north, rather than a winery in Napa. If you’re more of a hands-on learner, Brasswood is the place for you. It has its own sensory room, which allows you to smell, touch, and even taste the different complexities its wines offer. If you’re hungry, head to Brasswood’s on-site Bar + Kitchen, providing a rustic – yet welcoming environment, complete with bustlingvisitors and locals alike. If there’s too much to see and no time to sit down, head to Brasswood’s Bakery, also on-site, and try one of their famous chef’s pastries. Before you leave, do not forget to visit the caves, stretching out over 17,000 square feet and try some of their amazing wines. This winery really has it all.

Must Try: 2016 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc

CHIMNEY ROCK – Most Unique Wines

http://www.chimneyrock.com/

[portfolio_slideshow id=56439 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Nestled in a South African-inspired country house, Chimney Rock harvests from an impressive 119 acres of vineyards in Napa Valley. Focused on sustainable viticulture, Chimney Rock is also forward-looking in its unique tasting wines through experimenting all that Stags Leap District has to offer. Head through Chimney Rock’s tasting room to its patio, where you’ll sit between the beautiful stucco design and admire the Stags Leap Palisades hillside. For a more intimate setting, check out Chimney Rock’s barrel room, where they offer a number of different tastings and private events. Faithful to the Stags Leap District, Chimney Rock explores the immense characteristics that this one by four-mile-long area has to offer. If you’re looking for elevated Stags Leap wine with consistent, high-end production, Chimney Rock will surprise you and your taste buds.

Must Try: 2014 White Pebble Cabernet Sauvignon | 2013 Elevage

BLACK STALLION WINERY – Best Range of Wines

http://www.blackstallionwinery.com

[portfolio_slideshow id=56440 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Rather new to the Napa scene, Black Stallion’s grounds are rich with history. Previously home to Silverado Horseman’s Center, including riding trails, stables, and an arena, the grounds now strewn with grape varietals still pay homage to its equestrian roots. Black Stallion’s tasting room centers around a large circular bar, with fireplaces and plush chairs throughout. The tasting room offers an enormous selection of wines, some of which you will only get to try here. If interested in getting to know the grapes on a more personal level, Black Stallion offers a demonstration section, where guests can touch, smell, and taste the different grape varietals used in Black Stallion wines. A private tour will show you around the barrel aging cellar and the beautiful grounds of the vineyard. If you’re pallet appreciates a wide range of wines, a stop at Black Stallion is a must.

CUVAISON– Most Relaxing

http://www.cuvaison.com/

[portfolio_slideshow id=56441 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Established in 1969, Cuvaison is not your typical Napa Valley winery. Swap out the rich mahogany and fireplaces for a floor-to-ceiling modern camp placed right in the center of a robust vineyard and you’re at Cuvaison’s tasting room in Carneros. Cuvaison’s winemaker, Steven Rogstad, has produced high-quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for over 30 years and they seem to keep getting better. In the mood for something bolder? Cuvaison owns Brandlin Vineyard, an exceptional estate producing small-batch, but big flavor wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Zinfandel. This sleek tasting room will feel like a breath of fresh air and is definitely worth a stop (and a sip!).

Must Try: 2015 Pinot Noir | 2013 Brandlin Zinfandel

LEDE FAMILY WINES – Best Art & Music

https://www.ledefamilywines.com/

[portfolio_slideshow id=56442 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

What do Napa Valley, Rock & Roll, and Poetry all have in common? The Lede Family. Cliff Lede, owner of Lede Family wines and the Poetry Inn, combined his love of wine and music and created this one-of-a-kind winery right in the Stags Leap District. You might even say he was born to run this place. The winery sits at the foot of the Twin Peaks Ranch and has a tasting room and White Room for more intimate occasions. If you love classic rock, head “Backstage” to Lede’s VIP room, draped in eclectic art showcasing musicians and funky artwork, or just come hang out and enjoy the music. Backstage you’ll try Lede’s amazing wines from the Napa region, including Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Lede was able to expand its wine selection by purchasing acres in the Anderson Valley, which produces high-quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as part of the FEL wines. If you’re willing to take a walk on the wild side, try Lede Vineyard’s “Rock Block,” the annual mash-up of two of the best vineyard blocks from the vintage, each one appropriately named after titles of Lede’s favorite rock songs. Whatever your wine or music preference, Lede Family Wines is a great place to relax and come together.

Must Try: 2013 Songbook Cabernet Sauvignon

ALPHA OMEGA – Best Outdoor Scenery

https://www.aowinery.com/

[portfolio_slideshow id=56475 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]

Cascading fountains will greet you on your way into Alpha Omega and is a perfect entrance for this winery. Despite the cozy feel and greeting from its experts, Alpha Omega’s winery is grand in the most reserved sense. The tasting room boasts high ceilings, wood walls, and large windows allowing natural light and beautiful views of Napa. For a more private experience, Alpha Omega’s barrel loft homes both a rustic and elegant feel. The best view at this winery may have to be the Vineyard Terrance, where guests can enjoy Alpha Omega’s beautiful fountains and views of the Mayacamas Mountains. Alpha Omega’s winemaking mimics the elevated luxury you get from the winery. Blending the best Old World and New World wine making techniques, hand-harvested blocks are blended to perfection. Alpha Omega current signature wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Proprietary Red, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Consider yourself a sommelier? Visitors can also taste wines from the most famous winery in Napa, Beckstoffer To Kalon, planted in 1868 and which creates unparalleled Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Alpha Omega’s views, wines, and hospitality surely make it one of the best wineries to visit in the Napa Valley.

Fashion Week Online Goes to Bora Bora (and Beyond)

Island in the Sun: Where to Stay in Paradise

Believe it or not, fashion week is hard work. You may think that, as an intrepid fashion editor, I’m living it up at New York and Paris Fashion Weeks. But you’d be so wrong. Like, unspeakably wrong.

My typical day during fashion week consists of waking up around 5 AM, and opening up my phone and laptop, where a swam of emails, texts, Facebook and Instagram PMs — and other assorted bloops and bleeps — immediately fill the air. Beginning the day before New York Fashion Week, they will continue to come in nonstop, about 3 per minute, for the following 4 weeks of fashion month.

bloops will come in about 3 per minute for the following 4 weeks

But this isn’t the worst part. The worst part will be sitting in a hotel room while my team has fun. On most days, I’ll be posting stories (in HTML code, no less), editing photos, answering PR people, coordinating a team of 8 writers, updating the NYFW schedule, and monitoring social media accounts until around 1 AM.

Now, in case you think this deserves the world’s tiniest violin, I accept that. But I’m telling you: it’s exhausting beyond anything I’ve ever done (and I’ve waited tables, landscaped, and taught in the slums of Africa, to name a few gigs).

it’s exhausting beyond anything I’ve ever done

All of which is why, when I need a vacation, I need a REAL vacation.

And that, my friends, is why this year, Christine (my brave and beautiful life partner) and I chose Bora Bora and Le Taha’a, with a little help from Pacific for Less.

You may have heard of Bora Bora (or, as it’s humorously and erroneously referred to in Orange is the New Black, Bora Bora Bora) spoken of in near-mythological terms. I decided on the location a couple of years back, after Googling extensively over a period of years for “world’s most beautiful island.” I read countless comparisons of Hawaii vs. the Caribbean, Seychelles vs. Zanzibar, Antigua vs. Anguilla, Cancún vs. Barbados … and on and on. But the one thing that seemed to come up in countless comparisons (from people who really had traveled the world), was Bora Bora.

I found it Googling “world’s most beautiful island”

One person described Bora Bora as “looking into nature’s soul.”

So, breaking in the noble tradition where I “go it alone” and book direct, I inquired with a number of travel agencies, finally contacting Pacific for Less, along with some other agencies. (I’d heard Pacific for Less mentioned over and over in TripAdvisor reviews, and thought it couldn’t hurt to give them a try along with the rest.)

Claudia Schnetz, the owner, contacted me quickly, and it was easy to see her rates were substantially lower than her competitors, with better amenities: free nights, excursions, etc. In fact, it almost seemed just a little too good to true. In my usual distrustful way, I even insisted on speaking to her by phone, and found a very charming person, eager to help and oblige. Now, make no mistake: “nature’s soul” or not, Bora Bora is well-nigh ungodly expensive. But chalking it up to a “bucket list” thing, I decided to plunk down the deposit.

After listening to me carefully, and hearing that Christine and I had been to Japan, the Caribbean, and some 20 countries between us, Claudia said she thought we might like something more “adventurous,” and recommended we split our trip equally between Bora Bora and Le Taha’a, another island across the way.

After giving it some thought, I decided to take her advice. And I’m thrilled that I did.

Le Taha’a Island Resort and Spa

When the day arrived, we flew from Los Angeles to Tahiti.

Really the magic begins the moment you land in Tahiti. We landed at 6 AM, and there was already a ukulele trio serenading disembarking passengers in the airport terminal. They looked sleepy but happy. The happy vibe is everywhere, and seems so authentic, it’s both touching and inspiring.

Next we met a representative from Pacific For Less who greeted us with leis, after which we took a plane to the island of Ra’iātea. From there, we caught a boat to Le Taha’a, also known as “Vanilla Island” (for the amount of raw vanilla that’s cultivated there). At first the water seemed disappointingly normal: like the kind of water you might see anywhere.

However, as we neared Le Taha’a Island Resort and Spa, the water changed, and I began to know what that person online meant by “nature’s soul.” The water looked like food coloring had been spilled from some undersea spigot. And it changed: blue to green, to incredible jewel-like shades in between. In a world where I often tend to get my hopes up, this was an experience that was actually exceeding my expectations.

As with much of this trip, the resort also exceeded my expectations. The manager Julien Bressolles knew who were were by name, our list of likes and dislikes, and immediately provided us with vanilla tea and a warm “sushi style” rag for our hands.

The resort base is structured a bit like a giant treehouse, making it a fun place to dine (it feels just a bit like you’re in Tarzan’s sanctuary). The staff is incredible, always greeting guests with a musical “ia orana” (“hello” in Tahitian), or “maururu” (thank you).

The only bad news was that the overwater bungalow were had been assigned was leaking, so we were upgraded to a beachfront villa with a outside bathtub, which was fine for us, as it was bigger and a bit nicer.

As you can see from the pictures above, what began as a windy day resolved into a day that was, simply, quite beyond belief. I can honestly say I have never seen water like that, or seen nature look so unfathomably amazing. (I would say the nearest I’ve come to this kind of beauty is on safari, at the Maasai Mara Reserve in Kenya.)

The stingray snorkerling experience was beautiful, and we even picnicked in the water on a table propped up in the warm shallows.

We ended our second night with an excellent fire dance, and I had a two-hour “vanilla scented” massage at the spa on our final, fourth day. We even happened upon a beach puppy, that we were dangerously close to taking home. (My cat would not have been amused.)

What makes Taha’a Island Resort and Spa special is the people, and the raw, natural beauty of this place. In a sense, it might have even topped Bora Bora, which is where we went next.

The main difference between Le Taha’a and Bora Bora is the sense of privacy. Le Taha’a feels like a little slice of heaven has been carved out and specially donated to you and the one you love.

The St. Regis Bora Bora

[portfolio_slideshow id=45325 align=center width=699 click=advance thumbnailsize=40 showcaps=false]
It’s also fair to say the St. Regis Bora Bora was even better than we could have expected from photos. Personal butlers (yep, you heard that right) Marisela and Sebastian were assigned to us. They unpacked our bags (something I never would have thought I’d allow someone to do, but “when in Rome”), and studiously took care of our every need. (Including delivering coffee promptly at 6:30 AM. God, you can get used to that.)

Apart from the service, the best part about the resort is the beauty of the grounds themselves (modern tiki, anyone?), and the restaurants: Lagoon By Jean-Georges, Sushi Taki, and the Far Niente Ristorante. We ate at a different restaurant each night, and all were world-class. (Our in-room dining was a bit less exciting for me: Christine still talks about the delicious in-room pomodoro she had two days in a row, though.)

All the St. Regis restaurants were world-class

You can ride around the grounds on bicycles, or hitch a ride with any of the golf carts constantly buzzing about.

The snorkeling experiences from here are nothing short of incredible. Again, you should probably have a look at the pictures, as the words really fail when trying to describe this kind of experience.

In summary? Wow. And not just any old “I found rockstar parking” wow. BIG, once-in-a-lifetime wow.

If you’re planning a trip like this yourself, all we can say is go for it. We can’t recommend Le Taha’a Island Resort and Spa or St. Regis Bora Bora any more.

And when it comes time to book, talk to Claudia at Pacific for Less (or any of the great people working there) .

If you’ve ever wanted to see how life can be — should be — i.e., nature at its most inspired, dazzling, pure, and good, go to Bora Bora and Le Taha’a.

Your 80-year-old self will thank you. (Although there’s really no reason to wait that long.)

CAT Footwear: The “Make a Scene” Tour Comes to NY

Ever since the entrance of the “trucker hat” into fashionable circles at least 10 years ago, there’s been a certain place in everyone’s heart for a few unapologetically, traditionally “blue-collar” wardrobe items.

Indeed, “couture” brands like DSquared2 have made an art of it, with perfectly distressed jeans, corduroy caps, and giant, enameled belt buckles.

So with the mix of “high and low” styles enjoying a level of unprecedented success — hopefully a sign of the further deterioration of classisim — it’s no surprise that CAT, most commonly known for construction vehicles, would be looking to conquer the fashion scene.

CAT is looking to conquer the fashion scene.

The result? A  line of durable, comfortable, trendy shoes … and a hip New York party to kick it off.

The dimly lit industrial space off Bowery was the launchpad for the current Fall/Winter 2016 collection, with a first look at the upcoming Spring/Summer 2017 line. The collection on view was composed of fashionable boots, sandals, and shoes for men and women alongside the caption, “Make a Scene.”

The shoes are perfect for the city-life — the line offers a lightweight shoe, and some are even waterproof. They’re perfect for changing climates, and even fashionable enough to wear to music festivals.

The  party featured a DIY cocktail bar hosted by master mixologist Pamela Wiznitzer, the Creative Director of Seamstress New York; a pop-up tattoo parlor featuring temporary ink by Tattly; a photo booth courtesy of @DrinkBai; tunes by DJ Jasper Stapleton; and a curation of great eats thanks to @TheBrotherBuoy, including cookies and brownies by @ovenly, charcuterie by @cherrypointnyc and mini pop tarts by @hailmarybk.
