Griselle NY Runway Show “Free Spirit” Pays Tribute To Family And The Art Growth

This past weekend Griselle NY, founded by Asia Purnell put on a runway show inspired by the many lives of Asia Purnell. The show was not only an accomplishment but a toast to creative forces joining together.

Griselle, the New York based brand, stems from the name Griselda Blanco who is deemed one of the biggest female bosses in the drug game. The name was chosen not based on her actions but
more of what she stood for. She was the biggest in a predominantly male field which is who Asia Purnell, founder and CEO of Griselle aspires to be in the fashion industry.

Through the passing of Asia’s father in 2020 and mother in 2021, Asia found it difficult to find balance and time dealing with the two biggest losses in her life, but through those hardships Asia pushed and put her all into the brand. Using the pain to explore her creativity, which is the core foundation of a passionate and creative artist.

I know that’s what they would want me to do and my parents were both inspirations for two of my recent pieces.” – Asia Purnell.

The Streetwear label put on a show that held a space showcasing every staple stitching piece along with visually expressing the meaning behind the aesthetic and garments. Purnell’s aim was to show range and versatility without branding each piece and instead focus on the structure and detail of every garment designed.

Accompanying the models was sounds by Violation and Mestizo playing the violin live. As the show progressed it seamlessly transitioned from dark to lighter colored pieces that represented a new chapter for Purnell with deeper meaning. “ I titled my show “Free Spirit “because when I was younger I remember the feeling of being free and doing things on my own terms and feeling boundless.” – Asia Purnell.

This collection was designed and created to honor signature pieces that incorporated Purnell’s late parents. The baseball stitching is a staple piece for the brand as it was her late fathers love of baseball and the flowers seen in the show represented her late mothers passion for nature. Purnell has poured her heart and soul into not only this collection but her drive to become greater every day, pushing barriers is what her late parents would have wanted.

The show was curated and directed by Asia Purnell and Morgan Parks.

The collection ranges from $100-$900 USD
