Études Studio Collection No.28—Résonances

Etudes Studio presents its Collection No.28—Résonances at the heart of Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music (IRCAM), a renowned Parisian center dedicated to the contemporary study of sound and creative practice.

Inspired by the figure of the soundmaker and artists who have shaped, captured, distorted or experimented with sound, Résonances unfolds as a sensitive map spanning eras and disciplines. A medley bringing into dialogue the minimalist experiments rooted in John Cage’s philosophy with the emergence of Intelligent Dance Music in the early 1990s.

This approach echoes the very DNA of Études Studio, whose name evokes the musical compositions thought of as fields of exploration, variation and repetition. Here, garments become a space for conceptual and formal investigation. The wardrobe is reinterpreted through this logic of reverberation: emblematic pieces infused with singular accents, tailoring structured by meticulous material choices and precise cuts. A versatile collared bomber in a cashmere and wool blend sits alongside a blazer and wide-leg trousers.

Precise yet functional workwear details fuel the collection with plays on volume and layering: pieces equipped with front and back zippers, a protective and removable hood contrasting with the coat that carries it. Textural reliefs ripple across garments through laced inserts on jackets, corduroy, ribbed second-skin pieces or jersey with visible inverted seams. A puffer jacket with a double button placket, generous and dense knitwear in camouflage patterns, as well as a set of homewear revisiting the utilitarian uniform have been designed to transpose domestic comfort into the outside world.

The chromatic palette carried by this sensory exploration delves into deep blacks, cool greys and muted browns, contrasted with psychedelic moiré effects as well as subtle violet nuances worked in modulations. A purple hue diffuses a felted, immersive atmosphere reminiscent of altered perception spaces such as Dream House, the sound installation imagined by artists La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela.

Material inserts further enhance certain silhouettes, culminating in a fully leather ensemble,
asserting itself as a strong manifesto of the collection. This statement is echoed by a pair of cracked Camargue-inspired boots and a messenger bag.

Études Studio’s first ever developed accessory comes in two sizes and interpretations, entirely crafted in leather or combined with canvas, in order to adapt to different uses and wardrobes. Worn across the body, this bag marries functionality with urban allure in a sober and elegant language, laying the foundations for a line intended to evolve.

With this collection, Études Studio continues its exploration of a wardrobe where disciplines respond to and enrich one another. Résonances is conceived as a contemporary study, where sound, garment and creative gesture engage in dialogue, forming a genuine sonic palette.

Collaboration

Extending this reflection on sound and its effects on the body and mind, Études Studio collaborates this season with Canadian artist Jeremy Shaw, based in Berlin. His work, at the crossroads of video, installation and research, explores altered states of consciousness, trance and the meditative dimensions induced by sound. Images drawn from his films are reinterpreted and integrated into a selection of pieces within the collection, visually translating these phenomena of vibration and diffraction.

IRCAM

Presented at IRCAM, a venue dedicated to musical experimentation and sonic research, Collection No.28—Résonances comes to life within the Espace de projection. Modular and acoustically variable, this space has been conceived as an immersive framework where sound becomes matter and experience. It hosts a musical performance by British artist Actress, conceived especially for the occasion. Moving between experimental electronic music and live composition, this original soundtrack fully embodies the figure of the contemporary soundmaker, nourished by multiple influences and intertwined resonances.
