Designer Walter Mendez Just Turned The Beverly Hills Hotel into a Couture Wonderland

The Golden Cage couture exhibition by Walter Mendez Atelier turned The Beverly Hills Hotel into an idyllic couture paradise with stunning fashions, floral installations, and of course flowing cocktails.

Known for extravagance and sparkle, Mendez did not disappoint in showcasing his new collection of red carpet worthy looks to press, celebrities, and some of his most beloved clientele. The designer described The Golden Cage as “where fashion and fantasy come to life”.

Guests were first greeted by mannequins dressed in past collections and looks from memorable celebrity moments like Beyoncé’s New Years Eve gown. They were then ushered into the big reveal, The Golden Cage, an exhibition with striking new designs, other-wordly florals, a live pianist and of course plenty of photo opps.

The inspiration behind The Golden Cage is a love letter to the younger me, who at the age of 8 made the journey from Guatemala to America. I felt caged and bound by circumstances. However, it was my dreams and aspirations with little bit of delusion that allowed me to imagine all of this. As I stripped down the layers of my core, I realized the beauty and love of my story.

This collection quickly evolved into designs where the structures are highlighted and featured. I wanted to play with the contrast of soft and structured fabrics as I believe true beauty happens when you are most vulnerable.” said Mendez.

On display was Mendez’s signature palette of black, white, gold, and all things sparkle. The Golden Cage message fused into each gown with details like piped corset bodices and cage-like structures surrounding slinky drapery.

Notable attendees included the fabulous Shangela, actor Eugene Lee Yang, Dr. Pimple Popper Sandra Lee, Mohamed Hadid and girlfriend Keni Silva, Bling Empire’s Mimi Morris, actress Priscilla Quintanna, The Valley’s Jesse Lally and girlfriend Lacy Nicole, actress Adeline Rudolph, Gretchen Rossi and Slade Smiley, Etienne Ortega, Michael and Janeen Damien, Max and Neysla Paltsev, and Lea Romero.

About the Designer

Walter Mendez was born in 1989 in a modest village in Guatemala. At the age of eight, his life took a dramatic turn when he moved to Los Angeles, armed with nothing more than a suitcase full of dreams and a mother’s unwavering love. The cultural adjustment was challenging and often tumultuous, but Walter’s determination for a better life fueled his imagination and ambition.

In 2009, the digital footprint of “Walter Collection” emerged. Walter balanced his mornings as a college student with his afternoons as an entrepreneur, sometimes merging both roles simultaneously.

By 2013, Walter graduated from California State University, Long Beach, with a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design. Shortly after graduation, he opened the first Walter Collection brick-and-mortar store in Los Angeles.

Walter’s talent quickly gained recognition from celebrities such as Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, and many others. He has created iconic moments that have elevated the luxury space.

Walter Mendez has been hailed as “LA’s King of Couture,” reviving the value of “made in America” craftsmanship and innovative design; but more importantly, Walter exemplifies the American Dream, showcasing the power of perseverance and creativity.
