Adeam Spring/Summer 2020 Runway Show

For Spring/Summer 2020, designer Hanako Maeda transports us to Yokohama, one of the first seaports in Japan to open to foreign trade. In past collections, Maeda has always drawn inspiration from her two hometowns, Tokyo and New York, creating an East-meets-West aesthetic that has become the brand’s signature. So it’s no surprise that the next stop on ADEAM’s journey is the port city of Yokohama, where the Japanese first encountered Western culture. Yokohama also has a personal significance to Maeda—it is her parents’ hometown and a city she frequented in her youth for weekend getaways with her family.

With Yokohama and Tokyo Bay on her mind, Maeda developed a collection that exemplifies the relaxed ease of seaside, nautical dressing, and the beauty of cultural amalgamation. The knitwear and the tailoring are laced with classic maritime details such as stripes and sailor collars. The chunky sweaters in ADEAM’s signature Angel Hair Cotton yarn come in colors of the ocean such as oyster beige, aqua blue, navy, and terracotta. They are accented with nautical stripes and sleeves that unbutton to expose a touch of skin. Details such as the convertible sleeves, as well as the bold stripe shirting, demonstrate Maeda’s love for the kawaii aesthetic. These playful sweaters are paired with the structured tailoring of sailor jackets, resulting in polished, yet breezy looks.

The more delicate cocktail and evening pieces tell a more mythical story of the ocean. Dresses are embellished with pearls and crystals that look like droplets of water on skin. Seersucker appear in organic, whimsical ruffles of red and oyster beige. The peach beige organza float on the skin, and have an ethereal effect, evoking mythical sea creatures such as the mermaid. Bridging the two elements of Yokohama—the nautical and the natural—are the more structured cocktail pieces in navy Japanese crepe.

Seabound and ready for uncharted waters, the ADEAM Spring/Summer 2020 collection explores yet another dimension of East-meets-West.

Front row guests included Maggie Gyllenhaal, Suki Waterhouse, Zoe Chao, Calu Rivera, TK Wonder, Cipriana Quann, Brittany Xavier, and Samantha Angelo, all wearing ADEAM.
