From Darkness, a Garden Finds the Light
For Spring/Summer 2027, Tadashi Shoji enters the garden after dark.
Presented as part of the CFDA’s New York Fashion Week schedule, the collection will be livestreamed at Rockefeller Center on Thursday, September 10 at 3:30 PM EST. The collection traces a garden’s transformation from midnight to daybreak and, finally, into the radiance of Golden Hour—a meditation on beauty, resilience, and the promise of light.
Known worldwide for his special occasion dresses, Shoji translates this passage from darkness to light into evening gowns and cocktail dresses rich with texture, movement, and intricate craftsmanship. Textured crepe lends sculptural dimension, embroidered tulle and lace trace the organic forms of vines and foliage, and floral prints come alive with handcrafted blooms and shimmering paillettes.

Collection Inspiration
At midnight, the garden is mysterious and alive. Moonlight drifts across quiet fountains as crimson; fuchsia, violet, and green blooms appear from the shadows. This nocturnal world takes shape in embroidered lace that winds like climbing vines and dimensional florals that bloom across the body. Against the darkness, color feels richer, texture more pronounced, and every detail is more unexpected. Even in the stillness of night, the garden continues to grow—a quiet reminder that life persists through darkness.
Daybreak arrives softly. The first light slips through the trees; shadows soften, and colors begin to awaken. Textured crepe brings depth and sculptural elegance, while embroidered tulle traces the intricate beauty of vines and foliage. Handcrafted flowers rise from the surface like blooms reaching toward the morning light. Fern green, soft pink, romantic rose, and misty blue emerge gradually, mirroring a landscape awakening a new day.
By Golden Hour, the garden is fully illuminated. Sunlight dances between flower-covered trellises, revealing the garden in all its colors and abundance. Airy cocktail dresses and sweeping evening gowns capture its sense of movement, while floral prints embellished with handcrafted flowers bring the garden into three-dimensional relief. Elsewhere, shimmering paillettes overlay printed blooms, catching the light with every movement.
Throughout the collection, Shoji plays with the tension between structure and softness, shadow and illumination, restraint and abundance. Textured crepe is juxtaposed with the delicacy of embroidered tulle and lace; sculptural silhouettes give way to fluid movement; flowers move from print to embroidery to three-dimensional form. The garden becomes more than a motif—it becomes a language of color, texture, and craft.
It is also a reflection of our time. In a world marked by turmoil, conflict, and division, Shoji turns toward the resilience of nature and its unwavering instinct to grow. Flowers bloom through darkness. Vines find their way toward the light. Beauty persists.
Spring/Summer 2027 is ultimately an expression of hope
“What began in darkness now blooms in the light—a reminder that even when the world feels at its darkest, hope remains, quietly taking root until the light returns.”
