Designing the Modern Male Image: The Professional Philosophy of International Barber Sevan Nersisian

Few people still remember the days when the men’s segment of the beauty industry was limited to a neat haircut and basic grooming — even though that time was not so long ago.

“Designing a contemporary male image today is a carefully considered system in which the haircut plays a key role,” says Sevan Nersisian, a representative of the new generation of barbers who helped shape men’s grooming culture in Ukraine. As an expert in the visual culture of the male image, he is convinced that a hairstyle can emphasize a person’s status, reflect character, enhance charisma, and even become part of professional positioning. That is why, in today’s world, the work of an international hairstylist extends far beyond technical mastery.

The Initial Stage

Image design begins with an analysis of personality, just as the professional path of an international barber begins with foundational education. In Sevan Nersisian’s case, his higher education had nothing to do with his future professional calling, but it undeniably broadened his perspective. In 2006, he graduated from Kremenchuk State Polytechnic University with a specialist degree in Control Systems and Automation. At the same time, while studying at a technical university, Sevan was mastering the art of hairdressing. Beginning in 2001, the future expert in the barbershop industry started private training under the guidance of an experienced hairstylist. A little later, in August 2005, after completing advanced professional training courses at KP “Liana,” Sevan confirmed his high level of skill and obtained the qualification of a fifth-category universal hairstylist. He says that even then he was thinking in terms of a holistic image rather than an isolated service, and that very idea became the foundation of his professional philosophy.

Professional Formation

“I believe that a truly skilled barber should do more than simply fulfill a client’s request — he should be able to read the image of the person who comes to him and find a compelling visual form that truly suits them.” Sevan Nersisian is convinced that for a barber, not only facial features, hair texture, or head shape matter. He must also pay attention to the client’s lifestyle, professional sphere, habits, preferences, and inner sense of self. These were precisely the principles Sevan followed in 2005, when he began working at one of the oldest and most well-known hair salons in the city of Kremenchuk — “U Zhana.” And it was these principles that helped him build an impeccable professional reputation and establish himself as a master of the highest level.

At the beginning of 2009, Sevan Nersisian deepened his expertise in barbering by successfully completing the specialized course “Men’s Haircut from A to Z.” Five years later, in 2014, he founded his own barbershop, Barbarossa.

Under Sevan Nersisian’s leadership, Barbarossa quickly evolved into a center of professional excellence and creative development, becoming an example of high service standards in barbering. In 2022, this status was confirmed at the national level when the establishment received the prestigious Quality Mark Award, symbolizing and embodying the highest level of customer loyalty.

International Experience

In an approach to designing the contemporary male image that is rooted in personality analysis, international experience plays a significant role. To develop a broad professional vision, a barber must work with different cultures and types — and therefore with different aesthetic codes as well. In Sevan Nersisian’s view, a truly skilled barber combines practice, aesthetics, and analytical thinking: “It is important not only to think in terms of trends, but also to operate within contexts, asking yourself what will be appropriate and at the same time individual for this particular person.” Sevan Nersisian fully acquired this experience after moving to the United States, following an invitation to collaborate from the world-renowned international chain Champions Barbershops.

Since 2024, Sevan Nersisian has been working in Los Angeles. He obtained an official barber license in the United States and has continued his successful career there, but now in a fundamentally different format — an international one.

Get to the Root of the Matter

“A contemporary men’s hairstyle is an element of a holistic image that functions in connection with clothing, manner of behavior, and social role,” Sevan Nersisian notes. “That is why, in my personal opinion, the professional philosophy of an international barber lies not in creating a universal form, but in the subtle construction of an image.”

Sevan explains that this is not about a superficial view of the client, but a deeper one. And it is precisely this vision that has always distinguished him among his peers in international competitions. In 2021, he received the titles Top 10 Hair Stylist and Top Hair Trainer; in 2022, he was awarded Hair Transformation Master. In 2025, he won the American National Quality Mark Award 2025 in the category Excellence in Professional Barbering, Hairdressing Art & International Industry Leadership. The motivation of the organizing committee of this prestigious national award read: “…for an outstanding professional career, international competitive achievements, judging and educational activity, as well as leadership in the development of the industry.”

Sevan Nersisian’s journey is a story of how technical mastery, continuous professional growth, and respect for individuality, when united in one person, shape a new quality of the male image. An image that does not merely suit a person, but emphasizes character and presence. An image that is not decoration, but an embodiment of the inner self.
