Wangda: Redefining Traditional Fashion with Unconventional Elegance

Wangda was founded by Wangada Chen, whose background and passion for fashion have fueled the creation of a unique and compelling brand ethos to embrace the unconventional.

In this exclusive interview, we delve into the inspirations, challenges, and innovative techniques that define Wangda. From a deep appreciation for traditional tailoring to groundbreaking design concepts, discover how this brand has evolved and continues to captivate the fashion world.

Q: What inspired you to create your own brand?

After graduating from university, I felt an undeniable urge to start my own brand. Throughout my life, various signs, including my sister’s love for fashion and the profound influence of clothing, have pointed me toward this path. I’ve always been experimenting with fashion and it was a culmination of these subtle cues throughout my life that finally made me pursue my dream.

Q: Tell us about how you utilize traditional tailoring techniques to make unconventional designs.

I use traditional designs, which people are familiar and comfortable with, and reimagine them in different ways to make them unconventional. I incorporate new ideas into the designs and work with the traditional aspects to find a middle ground between the two. I will also use a traditional fabric in a new way, which gives my garments a familiar feeling while adding something unique.

Q: Can you share any memorable moments or experiences that have influenced your design philosophy and approach to fashion?

As I mentioned, there have been many moments throughout my life that have impacted my design philosophy but it all began when I was in kindergarten. In China, I had to wear a uniform to school and I asked my grandmother to alter the side pockets of my pants. The result earned me compliments at school, and I continued to get her to do things like this for me. Now, I do a lot of deconstruction in my designs and I still get inspiration from my sister as well.

Q: If you could go back in time and intern with one of the great designers who would you choose?

I would definitely choose Coco Chanel. Her designs are timeless and traditional, and I find a lot of inspiration from them. It would be amazing to see her design process and learn more about traditional tailoring from someone as impactful in fashion as her. It would be interesting to be able to speak with her about womenswear and how it has evolved with women’s sexuality like Kristen Stewart being a Chanel ambassador as a lesbian woman. She has her own way of wearing the designs that give it an edge juxtaposing the common feminine archetype Chanel is known for.

Q: Can you walk us through your creative process from conceptualization to the finalization of a collection?

Sometimes, I sketch first, and sometimes, I’m inspired by the fabric, so the design comes naturally. I also get inspired by characters in movies or shows. When I get the visual image in my mind, it’s like a sequence, and I can visualize the design in my head. Strong emotions give me inspiration as well. Sometimes, you feel cheated and dark. I like to capture emotions in my designs as well.

Q: Your brand emphasizes amplifying individuality. How do you ensure that your designs cater to a diverse range of tastes and personalities while maintaining a cohesive brand identity?

Since its inception, my brand has evolved towards a more relaxed and casual aesthetic compared to my first collection. Initially focusing exclusively on womenswear, I have now expanded into menswear as well. My designs have become more comfortable and laid-back, yet they maintain a tailored appearance. I aim for my garments to let wearers feel relaxed while still looking polished.

As Wangda continues to push the boundaries of fashion, it remains a beacon of innovation and individuality in the fashion industry. The brand’s dedication to authenticity and craftsmanship sets it apart in a crowded market. The next chapter in this remarkable journey will continue to be filled with groundbreaking designs and bold statements.
