Q: Could you please introduce the origin of Lost Pattern?
Yong: “Of course! Lost Pattern’s story is deeply rooted in the childhood memories of our founder and chief designer, Cata Cheng. Her earliest works were inspired by her memories of the snow-capped mountains of the majestic Himalayan mountain in her hometown. She translated these memories into intricate silk designs, starting with a piece she named ‘Himalaya,’ which symbolized the vibrant memories we should cherish.
As Lost Pattern evolved, Cata’s creations expanded to reflect both our travels and the personal stories we hold dear. One of my favorite pieces, for instance, captures my cherished moments with my beloved dog, Panda, and our favorite spot in New York City, Central Park. Last year, Cata and I embarked on a meaningful journey to Mexico, where we visited Frida Kahlo’s family. Our shared admiration for Frida’s boldness and vitality inspired us to create an officially authorized collaboration with the Kahlo family.
We’re also honored to have our brand embraced by esteemed partners like UC Davis, Rosewood, and Sephora. These collaborations have been incredibly meaningful to us, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to work with such distinguished organizations.”
Q: Can you tell us about the concept behind your Spring/Summer 2025 collection, La Isla?
Yong: “Absolutely! La Isla, which means ‘island’ in Spanish, is not just a place; it’s a concept. It represents a dreamy getaway that everyone needs at certain times in their lives. It’s a world filled with lush florals, refreshing breezes, and vibrant colors—elements vividly expressed in our runway collection. Essentially, La Isla is an escape, a vibe, a state of mind. It offers a sense of mental peace and tranquility, providing a stark contrast to the intense city vibes that surround us.
For us at Lost Pattern, La Isla symbolizes an emotional journey. Each design in the collection acts like a new island, offering a chance for discovery, inspiration, and a deep connection to nature. Our patterns tell stories and reflect the artistry at the heart of our brand. With La Isla, we’re committed to merging sustainable fashion with story-driven design. We aim to bring a touch of escapism into the urban environment, inviting wearers to embark on their own adventures and celebrate life’s beauty and imagination.”
Q: Tell us about the flash-mob-ish finale walk of the models going into the street.
Yong: “We are immensely grateful for the opportunity to showcase our collection at Poltrona Frau, located at 34th & Madison—an iconic and quintessentially New York City address. The finale walk, which faced the Empire State Building under the sunset on Madison Avenue, was our love letter to New York City.
La Isla is about infusing a sense of tropical escapism into the intense rhythm of city life. We aimed to create a moment where the bustling energy of NYC could momentarily pause and embrace a slice of serene paradise. It was truly heartwarming to see people stop for a few seconds as they passed by, captivated by our “little island” of tranquility. This brief yet impactful escape was our way of offering New Yorkers a moment of inner calm and beauty amidst their fast-paced lives, all set against the backdrop of their vibrant city.”
Q: What do you want to convey to your audience from the NYFW show?
Yong: “Our goal with this show is to celebrate togetherness and inclusivity. At Lost Pattern, we believe that fashion and storytelling should be accessible to everyone, transcending boundaries and connecting people. This event is a tribute to our vibrant community, including our loyal customers, supportive friends, esteemed industry partners, editors from distinguished media, CFDA mentors, representatives from the NYC mayor’s office, models, and creative content creators.
It’s much more than just a fashion showcase; it’s a celebration of unity and the incredible power of coming together through shared stories and creativity. We aim to highlight the beauty of diverse perspectives and the strength found in our collective experiences. This show is about honoring our community’s rich tapestry and fostering a sense of belonging, where everyone can see themselves reflected in the art of fashion.”
Q: What can you tell us about the latest developments at Lost Pattern?
Yong: “We’re thrilled to introduce our Ready-to-Wear line, which marks a significant milestone for us. This new venture represents a major step forward in our journey, allowing us to blend our signature silk craftsmanship with innovative designs that cater to everyday elegance. We’re also excited to continue our collaborations with like-minded communities who share our vision and values.
Storytelling is truly at the heart of our brand, and we’re eager to weave even more compelling narratives into our future collections. Each piece we create is not just about fashion; it’s about connecting with our audience through stories that resonate deeply and celebrate individuality. We look forward to exploring new themes and inspirations that will bring our brand’s rich heritage and creative spirit to life in new and exciting ways.”
