Christine’s Story

“As a kid I had a very nomadic lifestyle, having lived in several countries around the world, mostly due to my parents’ jobs. It’s an experience for which I’m eternally grateful. While it benefited me with a rich exposure to other cultures, it left cracks in my foundation that others could not see.

The emotional and psychological impact of uprooting and rerooting myself in five different countries before the age of 20 meant I had no sense of home or place in the outer world and my internal world felt incredibly malleable.

I had no sense of home or place

As a result, I struggled to establish myself in a career, a community, and an identity. Music was the one constant companion that’s managed to stick with me through the rapid series of tectonic life shifts I’d gotten used to. Playing music was something I loved since I was a small child, before all of the moving around began. After the globetrotting started, I clung to it like a life raft because it was the only thing I had that gave me a sense of personal foundation.

I moved to Los Angeles after school and spent three years struggling to break in to the industry. That was when I found myself in the worst job market in recent memory. During that time I had no friends, no money, no life really. The cumulative stress those years of struggle in LA took a debilitating toll on my health, which had a ripple-effect on my life for several years after. Saddled with student loan debt, and my health issues made finding work that would pay the bills and shrink my debt that much harder.

During that time I had no friends, no money, no life really

Things took a turn for the better when I finally landed my first entry-level position at an independent record label. The pay was low but I didn’t care. That year, everything started falling into place — I had an exciting job in the only world I felt I belonged, I found several great girlfriends, found a charming studio apartment in a neighborhood I loved and essentially laid the groundwork for a new life I could finally live on my own terms.

I found several great girlfriends, found a charming studio apartment

I also found love, ending up in a great relationship with a man whose presence in my life was a vital source of love and support. By 2018 I was feeling a lust for life I hadn’t felt since I was a teenager. I dove into a forgotten passion, dancing, and started planning trips. I finally felt like I was living and not just surviving.

I also found love, ending up in a great relationship

But that year things started changing too, starting with the breakup of my relationship. I spent that year readjusting to life as single me after six years with my now-ex boyfriend. One rift followed another, and by January of 2019 I learned that my closest friend and confidante was moving away to another country. I felt so alone with no support for what was to come.

Around that same time I remember when I felt the lump in my right breast. At the same time beloved cat Smokey had also become ill — vets were concerned he might have cancer. As we both went to a doctor for a diagnosis of a cyst on the same day I found out he was not sick but my news was not so good. I felt like a bomb about to explode from the shock, and explode I did. But the real knuckle on the gut punch was that I was finally feeling GOOD for the first time in my adult life, and now this.

Around that same time I felt the lump in my right breast

I was ultimately diagnosed with Stage IIIb breast cancer. Since then its been established that I’m going to have a year-long journey fighting this cancer. Treatment is 3-5 months of chemotherapy, followed by surgery, radiation and then five years of hormone therapy.

I’m blessed that I now have insurance, which is helping defray some of the cost, but even with that the medical bills have eaten away more than half of the savings I’ve managed to build, and I’m only two months into a year-long battle. Medical debt is a near-certainty.

I am grateful for the support of the Carol Galvin Foundation.

With your help I hope to avoid backsliding into the downward spiral that poor health and debt can find you in, that I worked long and hard to escape from in the past. I’ll be able to rebuild to a place of vitality once more so that I can give back to all who have given to me.”

With your help I’ll be able to rebuild to a place of vitality once more

Open to the Public

For the first time in Melange history, we will be producing our debut show during New York Fashion Week on September 6, 2019. Melange 2019 will take place at the historic St Mary’s Episcopal Church in Harlem. Founded in 1823, The “We Are Not Afraid!” Episcopal Church, has been a leader in inclusion and community support, including by providing HIV and refugee services.

Melange 2019 is proud to be partnering with 360Fashion Network to explore the intersection of diversity meets technology. 360Fashion Network will debut ROBOTIC DRESSES on the runway created with the 360Fash Tech “Robotic Dress” Kit. The designers selected in the Robotic Dress Hackathon are Clare Tattersall and Azreal.YM. Anina Net’s women’s wearables are paired with Melange Movement designers to create a spectacle of a diverse and tech-enabled future.

Anina Net is the CEO and founder of 360Fashion Network, a network of fashion professionals using the latest technologies. Anina evolved from a model to a fashion industry pioneer and developed Intel Curie-powered smart gloves showcased on CCTV at Chinese New Year and shape-shifting robot dresses showcased on ABC7News. She is listed as #7 in Top 100 Women in Wearable and Consumer Tech. We are excited to be joining forces with 360Fashion Network for Melange 2019. The Robotic Dresses will be on display following the show in an exhibition at KNOTEL in NYC with a panel discussion on Diversity and Inclusion featuring Melange leaders on Sept 8th & 9th.

For Melange 2019, we will be partnering with Katiti Kironde, the first African American woman on the cover of any fashion publication (Glamour in 1968). Katiti has been on the Board of Advisors of Melange since 2011. The KIRONDE Education + Health Fund, Inc (KEHF), a 501(C)3 non-profit corporation is dedicated to promoting education, healthcare and nurture for orphaned and vulnerable children in Uganda, East Africa, one village at a time.

Madeline Stuart, the world’s most famous model with down syndrome, as seen in Vogue, Marie Claire and more (500,000+ followers on FB), will be attending and participating in the show. Other VIP guests include:

– Corey Woods: Celebrity Designer for Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, etc. Check out Beyonce wearing his glasses this past June.
– Katiti Kironde: First African American Woman on the cover of a Fashion Magazine (Glamour, 1968).
– Anina Net: Global leader in fashion and tech, as seen in ABCNews & PBS, and has worked with Intel and IBM.

This is an one of a kind event created to amplify diversity and inclusion in the fashion and technology industries in order to create a future where we are all represented.

Supermodels Unlimited Magazine Hosts New York Fashion Week Event for Shatterproof – Celebrities and Models Raise Awareness for Substance Use Disorder During National Recovery Month

Over the last two years, survivors, celebrities, and families affected by the opioid crisis have come forward to share their stories. As decades of medical neglect come to light, large pharmaceutical companies and government bodies are finally taking notice. The fashion industry is no stranger to addiction and in the true spirit of New York Fashion Week, Supermodels Unlimited Magazine will honor those lost to the disease of addiction and celebrate those living in recovery by showcasing a collection of little blue dresses on September 7, 2019. The LBD Movement is a celebrity fashion showcase held seasonally during New York Fashion Week that highlights national issues facing teens and young adults.

This year’s show will feature survivors of addiction, from all walks of life, who are giving back to their communities and inspiring a new generation to make healthy choices. Along with the survivors walking in The LBD Movement runway show are celebrated models and actresses: Isis King from Netflix’s Now They See Us, Jeana Turner from America’s Next Top Model (ANTM). Spinning beats for the models is celebrity DJ James Kennedy from Bravo-TV’s Vanderpump Rules.

The evening’s celebrity host will be Jordan Kimball of ABC-TV’s Bachelor in Paradise. Kimball is currently starring in the newest season of Bachelor in Paradise, where things are quickly heating up. Kimball is also a fan favorite from The Bachelorette. Kimball will be joined by current cast members walking in the show to support the cause. “What they’re doing cannot be applauded enough. Addiction effects everyone at some point in their life, whether it be a friend, family, or yourself. Shatterproof is working hard to aid in their recovery, save lives, and rebuild relationships. Shatterproof is a blessing, and we owe it to them to show our support!” says Jordan Kimball.

Supermodels Unlimited Magazine will conclude The LBD Movement runway event with a live music tribute by Wesley Stromberg from The X Factor, followed by a financial commitment to Shatterproof. Shatterproof is a national nonprofit organization focused on reversing the course of the addiction crisis in America by advocating for changes to federal and state policy, transforming addiction treatment, ending stigma and providing public education through family and workplace programs.

“One in three Americans is impacted by addiction, and with stigma as the leading killer in our country, our young people especially need to feel supported in openly discussing this disease and seeking treatment,” said Gary Mendell, Founder and CEO of Shatterproof. “It is imperative that industries do their part to lead the conversation around this public health crisis, and we are grateful to Supermodels Unlimited Magazine and the fashion industry for using their platform to do so.”

The event will feature a Bubbles with Benefits bar, sponsored by Vita Coco from 8-9PM, giving both guests and media the opportunity to spend time with the event participants, media, and the charity to speak about the important work being done to help those in need.
