Q: What prompted you to decide to become a stylist? Why did you get involved in the fashion business?

My family is in fashion. Pattern makers, costumers, dressmakers. I grew up constantly among their shops and fabrics, snatching silks or little scraps of velvet to make things.

At some point they had to decide whether to kick me out or teach me something, because I was obviously not going to leave.

Thank goodness the latter won.

Q: What is your favorite article of clothing or accessory?

My boss at Saks bought me my fav pair of Fendi boots.

Q: What is your typical day, or the most challenging part of the day for you?

My job is amazing. I get to inspire teams, put together ideas, and execute them to their best and fullest potential, making sure that everyone is achieving their best.

Q: Is there one look you styled that you would consider your signature “style”?

I always try to work with the situation; for example we would never dress Mrs. Obama the way we style an editorial for Vogue.

It’s about appropriateness.

Q: What’s the biggest “faux pas” when asked to style a celebrity?

Not understanding what their personal style / comfort zone is.

Q: Have you ever had a designer who refused to send you clothes? Or had a celebrity refuse to wear an outfit / or designer?

Absolutely; it’s part of it. Sometimes designers want to send items but have limited samples; or the celeb or project isn’t a priority for them. It’s business, not personal. Most celebrities know themselves, and if they’re refusing, it’s because they know something won’t look like “them,” or it’s simply outside their comfort zone.

Q: Who in your opinion has flawless style? Yesterday, today and tomorrow?

I love Kate Moss, Tom Ford, and who can deny Karl Lagerfeld.

Q: Name three of your favorite shops, and three items every woman should have in her closet in order to have GREAT style.

Shops: Any Old Iron, Assembly, Opening Ceremony.

Every women should have lingerie, up-to-date shoes, and a great bag, every season.

Q: What is your favorite trend right now? Which trend would you like to see pass?

I keep saying this. NO CROCS outside of the garden please, and no pleated khkai pants. My fav trend right now is the clutch. I love what designers are doing with it. Especially McQueen.

Q: Who would you allow to style YOU for an event?

Karl Templar.

Q: What are you wearing RIGHT now?

My absolutely fav, which I haven’t taken off all winter, is Oscar de La renta blue cashmere and silk cardigan with a hood. No buttons, with a tie. And cotton Prada slim-fit pants. Armani Exchange tank top.

New York Fashion Week has a certain allure that leads people to believe…

10 Tips to Keep Yourself in the Good Books for Fashion Week

By Amy Yew, Contributor

New York Fashion Week has a certain allure that leads people to believe somehow only the most classy and chic are in attendance. But when you strip away all that glamour, it’s really a room full of people, dedicated to fashion and (hopefully) inspired by a designer’s vision.

However, this doesn’t change the fact that some things violate the fashion week “code of conduct”. I’ve seen my fair share of what happens, from the good, the bad to the ugly. Here are some behaviors that will get you blacklisted with your fellow fashion peers.

1. Please don’t eat during the show. To be fair, most fashion shows start later than scheduled, but that doesn’t usually last more than 15 minutes. Crunching on chips or smelling your chicken Caesar sandwich while I’m trying to enjoy a show is not exactly what I have in mind when I think couture chic.

2. If you have a seat, SIT. Okay, I get it: Sitting behind someone who thinks big hair is au courant can get in the way of catching that perfect shot. But by standing, you’re blocking everyone around you, and are forcing your fellow show-goers to do the “lean in” for a view.

3. Don’t push to get in the door. If you have an invite, you’re in! During more than one show this season, I have experienced fear of being thrown to the ground and stilettos stepping on me. This is not a Barney’s warehouse sale. Just because you get in first doesn’t mean you get the best seat. There’s a reason why you were assigned a seat. Let’s just say I was lucky to have survived the Rebecca Minkoff show. It was a near fashion-death experience.

Let’s just say I was lucky to have survived the Rebecca Minkoff show. It was a near fashion-death experience.

4. If you’re sitting in the front row, don’t leave during the show. This may be a no-brainer but I felt it had to be reiterated after the Mara Hoffman show. Please do not walk by the runway as the models are walking in the finale to get out 30 seconds before the show ends.

5. Keep the cursing out of fashion week. Being passionate about something is great, but a constant flow of f-bombs while you’re sitting in a show is distracting and not to mention a little un-classy. It’s fashion week, not a sorority.

6. If you have to cross your legs, keep your feet in. God forbid a model trips over your feet!

7. Don’t steal gift bags. If you have not been assigned a seat or the seat beside you is empty, there is no need to be a Greedy Nancy and steal more than the gift bag designated to you.

8. Don’t keep talking during the show. I’m all about getting to know someone, and a huge “people person,” but having to answer someone every two seconds during a show can get annoying and distracting. If you want to socialize, do it before or after the show.

9. If the director of the show is looking for a seat in the front row, it’s always nice to offer it up. I know that sounds insane. Why would you do that when you have the primo spot at a fashion show? If a director is looking for a spot in the front row, it’s probably important, and they will appreciate it if you offer up your spot. They will usually switch you to another spot that is comparable. A little kindness goes a long way.

10. Mind the freebees. It’s great to get free stuff, but do not take mass samples of freebees. It’s comparable to stealing samples off the hotel cart.

There’s nothing wrong with being eager about fashion, because I feel that way before every show. But bad behavior at shows will get you blacklisted by your fellow peers and may warrant a ban from next season’s show. Just remember: the show must go on — with or without you. But it sure is nice to be included.

John Galliano Returning to New York Fashion Week?

John Galliano Returning to New York Fashion Week?

by Pablo Avion

I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone wax as poetic about fashion as my girlfriend, on the announcement that John Galliano would be returning to fashion thanks to the patronage of Oscar de la Renta.

“It’s just when someone is that talented … it’s such a shame. John Galliano was bold, adventurous, humorous. Fashion takes itself so seriously sometimes, and he was the exact opposite of that. Playful, brilliant … he sort of had it all.”

If you’ve ever seen the video that got him into trouble in the first place, anyone can agree it’s not pretty.

The revelation that Galliano is treating himself for alcoholism sheds light on the situation to anyone familiar with the disease. Alcoholism has a funny way of bringing out the darkest parts of a person’s character, sabotaging the better parts with a ruthless efficiency.

Although the saying “in vino veritas” (“in wine, truth”) always applies to a degree, the active alcoholic seems to always be subject first to a punishing self-hate.

And it’s this self-hate that propels the alcoholic to try and dream up the most obnoxious words possible, as if to say: “Think you like me? Think again.”

I don’t claim to be an expert on this problem, or a practicing psychologist. Although I do have various family members in the ground as testimony.

To pepper you with some parting clichés (because everyone loves those): “Ask for mercy, not justice.” “An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind.”

Stuff That Interests Us This New York Fashion Week

WARNING: There are a lot of designers to see this New York Fashion Week. Like, a WHOLE lot. These were just the ones that popped out at us. So don’t be afraid to see all the shows, miss work, and get fired. Wait wait, don’t do that, please. Because then we’d feel sad, and want to bail you out, and take an extra job, then be too tired to go to work, and then get fired ourselves. And would that help the economy? Nooooo.

DEPESHA MAGAZINE: Russian Fashion Industry Presentation and Reception

We’re big fans of the burgeoning Russian fashion industry. That’s probably why we’re so excited about Russian Fashion Week, which will be live-streaming on March 29.

And that’s why we’re also excited about the Russian Fashion Industry Showcase and Reception, being held by DEPESHA magazine and the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in New York.

The showcase will feature original works by established and emerging Russian fashion designers, photographers and stylists. The event will take place on Wednesday, February 6th, 2013 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, inside the Consulate General of the Russian Federation on the Upper East Side in New York City.

FEBRUARY 07 – LIVE STREAMING, 6 PM

CONCEPT KOREA

How can we avoid a reference to “Gangnam Style” here? Well, very easily. And we ought to (avoid it, that is), because it’s so painfully predictable. But at the same time, how can anyone ignore the emergence of Korea onto the international style stage?

And speaking of cool (or corny, depending on your taste) K-Pop videos, what about “Poison” by K-Pop girl-group Secret? It’s as if Madonna got reincarnated in Seoul and woke up in Golden Earring’s “Twilight Zone”.

But we digress. Shame on us. Concept Korea is a collaborative presentation to promote Korean fashion designers and assist them in their attempts to break into the U.S. fashion market.

Here are a couple of looks (well technically, three looks) from just one of the collections, KYE by Kathleen Hanhee Kye. The others will be SON JUNG WAN by Son Jung Wan, CHOIBOKO by Choi Bo Ko, CRES. E DIM by Hongbum Kim and LIE SANG BONG by Lie Sang Bong.

There’s a bit of harajuku going on in here, we think. (You know, Japanese street fashion like cool people in Fruits wear, where they combine paisley knee-socks with a Tartan plaid skirt, and make it look easy?) But with a touch of Korean mafia tattoo chic, which is a little disturbing, unless we just keep it in the fashion arena, in which case hey, heh heh, we’re not afraid.

FEBRUARY 8 – LIVE STREAMING, 8 PM

ACADEMY OF ART UNIVERSITY

New talent. Since 2005, the School of Fashion has premiered the collections of recent graduates during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. (Sorry, we couldn’t think of anything funny.)

“Part of our commitment to the designers is to help launch their careers and have their collections seen by industry professionals,” said Dr. Elisa Stephens, President of Academy of Art University.

For the 2013 show, there will be eight women’s wear collections, two of which are collaborations between Fashion and Textile Design students, and one collaborative collection sponsored by UBIFRANCE, the French Trade Commission.

Jie Jessie Liu was born and raised in Penglai, in the Shandong Province of China, and earned her B.F.A. in Accounting from York University in Canada. At Academy of Art University, she has earned her M.F.A. in Fashion Design. Liu’s designs were also presented at the University’s Spring 2012 Fashion Show as part of the Italian Trade Commission Collection, and she earned second place in the Inspired by Vitamin Water design competition that was judged former Project Runway finalist Mondo Guerra. Liu collaborated with Textile Designer Tanja Milutinovic for her Spring 2013 collection. She was inspired by the artist Anish Kapoor, known for his geometric, streamlined sculptures and installations, which she interpreted in the garments’ sharp lines and angular silhouettes.

Tanja Milutinovic is originally from Belgrade, Serbia. She reinterpreted the silhouettes for women’s wear, maintaining an oversized look, and experimented with collar and lapel structures.

Liza Quiñones was born in the Bronx and grew up in Valley Stream, New York. Quiñones designed textiles for Jisun Lee’s Spring 2013 collection.

Iglika Vasileva Matthews is originally from Bulgaria. Hadid’s structures often create an illusion of movement in static objects, which Matthews sought to replicate in her collection.

Yanfei Fan was born and raised in Shijianhuang, in the Hebei province of China. Fan was inspired by the windows in modern buildings, including their repetitive patterns, angular shapes, and the transparency of the glass.

Ginie C. Y. Huang was born and raised in Taiwan. She was inspired by the work of Ninagawa Mika, one of Japan’s most popular photographers. Huang was inspired by the feeling that Mika’s images invoke – a feeling of being completely immersed in the colors.

Stephina Touch was raised in Bakersfield, California. Touch looked to traditional Asian architecture when designing her Spring 2013 collection, gleaning inspiration from the clean lines and tiled roofs.

Jarida Karnjanasirirat is from Bangkok, Thailand. Karnjanasirirat wanted to mimic the structure of relief sculptures – in which elements of the sculpture are raised from the background. She created three dimensional collars, lapels, and pleats, bringing her inspiration to life in her garments.

FEBRUARY 8 – LIVE STREAMING, 9 PM

PARKCHOONMOO

We just love this. Enough said. On Model Mayhem (which is getting creepier and creepier … anyone else notice that?), they always tell you not to include “my work speaks for itself” in your bio. But this sort of does. Speak for itself. It just looks great. What more is there?

Now for the fluff:

Park has been at the forefront of Korean avant garde design since 1988, when she launched her label DEMOO. Subsequently, she launched her eponymous line, PARKCHOONMOO.

Underlying her edgy but wearable designs is an artistic sensibility and superb fit derived from couture roots translated into ready-to-wear. Park favors the striking impact of monotones such as black and white, punctuated by counterpoints of color, and layering to create new combinations that have become a signature of the PARKCHOONMOO aesthetic.

FEBRUARY 11 – UNCONFIRMED LIVE STREAMING, 9:30 AM

MATHIEU MIRANO

It’s a semi-little-known fact (or maybe just a semi-known fact) that Star Wars was based on legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa’s samurai film, The Hidden Fortress.

Some the these designs from Mathieu Mirano show how, properly imagined, the future might yet be a soothing combination of feudal Japanese simplicity and futuristic efficiency.

The thing is, when you’re trying to text your BFF (who lives on the next starship) and fight off a bunch of misbehaving humanoid robots, you want the freedom of motion a kimono provides, and to look your best.

We think these are really beautiful. Fashion forward, daring, with a hint of the traditional. The third one might be a bit much for our taste, but for a reception held among the stars, you need something to compete with the supernova happening outside the bay windows.

Born in New York, Mathieu Mirano attended the Huntington School of Fine Arts before studying at Parson’s School of Design in New York City. Mathieu launched his debut collection in 2011 through his inspired inventiveness and unique sense of fashion. He effectively utilized high levels of construction, craft and imagination.

VERA WANG

She had a line at Kohl’s, so you know she’s cool.

Vera Wang has created a unique aspirational world that alludes to sensuality and youthful sophistication. Exquisite details, intricate draping and a nonchalant sense of style characterize the Vera Wang aesthetic.

Vera Wang, a native New Yorker, understands women who embrace fashion. By age 23, Vera was the youngest ever Vogue fashion editor and stylist where she remained for 16 years before moving to Ralph Lauren as a design director. In 1990, Vera Wang opened her first flagship store on Manhattan’s famed Madison Avenue, introducing fashion to the bridal industry with revolutionary designs and refined detailing. Since then she has expanded her collections to include ready-to-wear, footwear, eyewear, fragrance, flowers, china and crystal, silver and gifts, bedding, fine papers and her first book, Vera Wang On Weddings.

In 2005, the Council of Fashion Designers of America awarded Vera “Womenswear Designer of the Year”. Vera further established herself as a style authority in 2007 by sharing her modern sensibility with millions of American women through her Simply Vera Vera Wang line available at Kohl’s department stores nationwide.

2010 marked Vera Wang’s 20th Anniversary as a brand, a celebration of two decades spent at the forefront of fashion.

FEBRUARY 12 – LIVE STREAMING, 1 PM

JENNY PACKHAM

We once met some guy with the last name “Kent,” and when we called him “Clark Kent” just to try and make him laugh, and asked if “anyone had ever told him that,” and he looked at us like we were total idiots, we realized we really were amazingly lame. So when we say “Jenny Packham really packs ‘em in,” as in like, “really packs fashion in,” you’ll realize we never learn from our mistakes and really are unconscionably dumb.

Maybe one day we’ll learn. Not today.

Anyway, we love this puzzle-tastic design:

Packham’s designs are regularly selected for stylistically acclaimed television and film productions. Most recently, cult US TV series Gossip Girl dedicated an episode to a Jenny Packham show presentation in New York modeled by the lead characters. Other high profile productions featuring Packham’s designs include James Bond’s Casino Royale and Sex and the City.

Red carpets the world over are graced with her sumptuous designs, from Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, Rhianna and Beyonce to Keira Knightley, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston and The Duchess of Cambridge.

FEBRUARY 13 – LIVE STREAMING, 5 PM

FALGUNI AND SHANE PEACOCK

We once saw a super-ornate Dolce & Gabbana shirt at a store in Beverly Hills, that would have cost two months’ rent to purchase. It had a picture of a golden cup with sunbeams coming out of it, and a lion on the back, and maybe even a series of Doric columns like the Parthenon.

We snickered at the D & G shirt, at first (“What is this, some sort of hideous Ed Hardy tragedy?”), and decided to try it on. Suddenly we had to admit, the fit was … nice. And it was sort of fun. If you were holding a party on a boat sailing the Greek islands, you would really want to wear this. People would feel a bit of relaxation, we thought. “Let’s not take ourselves too seriously,” it seemed to say. “Let’s just have fun today.”

We still couldn’t afford it. But we had to admit, it was something. We sort of feel that way about this, from Falguni & Shane Peacock. It’s loud. It’s fun. It’s sort of masterful.

Falguni & Shane Peacock have built a career in fashion by following their own set of rules. The secret of their success is the unique and unusual styling and attention to detail they give to each design to create “Luxury”.

“We love the idea of elegance and intricacy, whether it is in a scarf or an haute couture garment. Our sensibility, combined with a touch of high octane glamour and our devotion to rock and roll – the transition from chic to edgy, combined with a slightly wicked charm makes our clothes perfect for a rock and roll superstar.”

FEBRUARY 13 – LIVE STREAMING, 6 PM

ANNA SUI

Do you have a nerdy friend, completely out of touch with the world?

And yet, you find yourself envying their magical little universe, that doesn’t need anyone else? We have friends like that. But then, we once had a unicorn collection.

Anyway, that’s what we love about Anna Sui. She lives in Magic Land. We just get to visit there.

Anna Sui has a worldwide cult following who look to her each season for ironic mixes of romantic nostalgia and rock-and-roll glam. Born in Detroit, Sui came to New York to study at Parsons School of Design. Her first runway show premiered in 1991. The next year she opened her original retail location at 113 Greene Street in Soho; with its iconic lavender walls, red floors, antique black furniture, and signature dolly head mannequins. She won the CFDA Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent the same year, and in 2009 she received their prestigious Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. Anna Sui has 50 boutiques and is sold in over 300 stores worldwide. The Anna Sui line also includes very popular fragrance and cosmetic ranges, and 15 total licenses. Anna Sui designs and manufactures from her New York City headquarters.

Boy, we’re really tired after writing all this. No one told us we’d be doing any work.

Well, enjoy!

LiveRunway.com is very pleased to announce a new partnership with MB Fashion Week Russia. Tune-in March 29 at RussianFashionWeekLIVE.com.

Russian Fashion Week Now Celebrating 26th Season

Russian Fashion Week is now in its 26th season.

Mercedes-Benz recently signed a three-year deal for title sponsorship of Russian Fashion Week – the key event in the Russian fashion industry and the largest fashion week in Eastern Europe.

Russian Fashion Week had been held in Moscow for the last ten years in early April and mid-October.

During this period, RFW has discovered dozens of new designers and has presented over sixty international designers to the Russian market.

From the very first day, RFW was aimed at supporting and promoting Russian fashion and has increased interest in Russian designers both at home and abroad. Partnerships and joint projects between RFW and fashion weeks in Milan, London, Beijing, Athens, Lisbon and other cities have turned Moscow into a major European fashion center. In addition, Russian Fashion Week has become a central event for all former Soviet republics – the best designers from the Ukraine, Belarus and other countries showcase their collections at Russian Fashion Week in Moscow. The collaboration between RFW and Mercedes-Benz will make it possible to bring the young Russian fashion industry to an even higher level and wider audience.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia will occupy a special position in the international fashion calendar, not only due to the presence of Mercedes-Benz, but also, primarily, due to the fact that the German auto manufacturer supports the most influential fashion events in the world.

Fashion is the key communication platform for Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz cars are exhibited at fashion weeks in Milan, Paris and London, where the German brand is a strategic partner. Changing its name to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia, Russian Fashion Week elevates itself to sit alongside Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. “Russia is a fast-growing market for our cars, and Moscow – the next hot fashion destination. Our participation in fashion week is vivid proof of these two axioms, – CEO of Mercedes-Benz Russian Juergen Sauer says. – The signing of this agreement is a logical development of Mercedes-Benz’s global strategy to support the most important fashion weeks in the world. I’m confident that we can strengthen the potential of Russian Fashion Week, as we did, for example, in New York and Berlin”.

“The participation of Mercedes-Benz in RFW will give, in addition to the obvious benefits, an even more acute sense of fashion and style,” said Alexander Shumsky, CEO of Artefact Communications Agency, General Producer of Russian Fashion Week. For the national ‘fashion consciousness’ and development is it important to be on the same catwalk with the legends and trendy designers, such as participants of the previous RFW – Vivienne Westwood, Jeremy Scott, JC de Castelbajac. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia will affirm Moscow’s position on the world fashion map.”

The agreement between RFW and Mercedes-Benz was negotiated by IMG Fashion, which commercially represents the event.

Why so blue, FashionWeekOnline? Is it because some knuckleheads are saying Paris Fashion Week is “not for regular people”?

Scintillating pop-quiz question: Why do writers who don’t like fashion, write about fashion? (Answer below!)

Why do fools fall in love?

Many questions!

And why is this article called “Paris Fashion Week 2013 Blues”?

Oh, we guess it all started with this article by the good folks at the San Francisco Chronicle, who are the latest super-courageous souls who have dared to buck tradition and take up the lance versus the runways now happening in Paris, in what can only be described as the seasonal valiant charge, that comes as predictably as the rain and so isn’t so very exciting to begin with, we realize, now that this sentence is over.

But why, you ask? Why get annoyed by this?

For one thing, the shows referenced aren’t what most think of as “Paris Fashion Week” proper at all. No, as you the knowledgeable fashion reader knows, these are actually the “haute couture” shows.

Which means, yes, the noble San Franciscan scribes are correct that this is not the nice, familiar stuff we might see on the rack at JC Penney or Target. Not that there’s anything wrong with either of those stores. (Have you seen the Levis selection at JC Penney, lately? Pretty awesome, actually. And Target seems to have better stuff than Macy’s half the time. Editorial opinion.)

No, “haute couture” (which cleverly translates to “high fashion,” those being the French words for “high” and “fashion,” respectively), is more of designers creating a bit of fun visual art, for the very bold few who really want to have fun with it. Think if it more as “designers talking to designers.” Or “designers talking to those who like fashion, and — you know, maybe think it could actually be fun.”

But as we know, most writers online are trying to get ad clicks from enraged readers who want to gape and guffaw in between their other fixes of anger-tainment in the form of articles filled with pointless political bickering or the rage-a-halls of nightmarish sites like Jezebel or Gawker, and hey — there’s really nothing wrong with that, ultimately. Everyone has to make a buck, right?

Except that there seems to a trend of “dumbed down” writing out there that’s just a bit scary. We recently saw a “major motion picture” (yep, that major) with Christian Bale where a character said: “You seem to be something of a prodigal student.”

(“Prodigal” presumably meaning “prodigy” … as in “mad skills.”)

Except “prodigal” means “spendthrift” — as in “likin’ to spend mad money” — something else entirely.

But did anyone proofread, copy edit, or otherwise fact-check that basic bit of grammar, anywhere from conception to revision to production? Apparently, this sort of accuracy is (to borrow a term from fashion), somewhat out of vogue.

What’s the point, SFGate writers?

You are correct that no, haute couture isn’t for everyone. And no, it isn’t for “better” or “worse” people.

It’s for people who like fashion.

And if you don’t like fashion, you could always write about, say, nachos.

We love nachos!

##

p.s. We have to admit, the little Iris van Herpen raptor-on-the-shoulder is sort of funny. And please excuse all the typos in this article. See? We’re not so smart.
