Should John Galliano Return to Fashion?

John Galliano Returning to New York Fashion Week?

by Pablo Avion

I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone wax as poetic about fashion as my girlfriend, on the announcement that John Galliano would be returning to fashion thanks to the patronage of Oscar de la Renta.

“It’s just when someone is that talented … it’s such a shame. John Galliano was bold, adventurous, humorous. Fashion takes itself so seriously sometimes, and he was the exact opposite of that. Playful, brilliant … he sort of had it all.”

If you’ve ever seen the video that got him into trouble in the first place, anyone can agree it’s not pretty.

The revelation that Galliano is treating himself for alcoholism sheds light on the situation to anyone familiar with the disease. Alcoholism has a funny way of bringing out the darkest parts of a person’s character, sabotaging the better parts with a ruthless efficiency.

Although the saying “in vino veritas” (“in wine, truth”) always applies to a degree, the active alcoholic seems to always be subject first to a punishing self-hate.

And it’s this self-hate that propels the alcoholic to try and dream up the most obnoxious words possible, as if to say: “Think you like me? Think again.”

I don’t claim to be an expert on this problem, or a practicing psychologist. Although I do have various family members in the ground as testimony.

To pepper you with some parting clichés (because everyone loves those): “Ask for mercy, not justice.” “An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind.”

Melancolia was finally nominated at cannes … But we don’t need psychological reasons: everybody likes what he does so everybody wants him to come back. Did he apologizes publically ?

  3. Wendy Evens says:

The way I see it the fashion industry is very forgiving. I’ve been following (and blogging some) about this ordeal of his and in my opinion I think he should return to fashion and be welcomed back by his peers, clients, everyone. He has TALENT and the fashion world, at least, has had somewhat of a really *missing* with his absence. Making amends properly and instill truth and integrity for all — if he can demonstrate he can treats others with respect; forgive and forget — welcome back John! xx

I see the fashion industry as a medium for art and artistry, not a politic or humane field where any contrary in beliefs and morals are highly regarded as the foundation for the idea of fashion. So, why not? It was a blatant mistake that Galliano made and aroused unwanted publicity for his public image but observing and enjoying his talent in fashion artistry, of course he has to go back into it; it’s not an option.

Absolutely ! better then the movies…..

I think he dug his own grave, one can’t say what he did that night and get away with it,after all 86 percent of the clients are Jewish. It might be over 50 years since the war,but what happened should never have taken place on so many levels.I did feel he had talent as a designer, but he really should have thought about what came out of his mouth.I think the new designer of Dior leaves him for dead, his designs are incredible, and he has respect of women, and I feel John did not.I do believe everyone should get a second chance, but some lep can’t change their spots.

  7. What a wonderful news! Everybody makes mistakes and most people should get a second chance! Dear John, please return :) . Can’t wait!

Unfortunately “When the spirit goes in the devil comes out” but it is a decease that can be cured.
There would be a gigantic creative hole in fashion design if JG were not part of it!
Only once in a blue-moon we are lucky to have bestowed upon us a genius in their field.

    A huge fan

I think everyone should welcome him back with open arms. The man is iconic. Alcoholism is a disease and without the proper help it can be nearly impossible to overcome. So, as long as he is seeking help, why not? However, if being in the Fashion Industry is a part of his triggers than he shouldn’t be in an environment that’s not healthy for him; only he can decide.

  10. Elaine Lancaster says:

Absolutely he should to doing what he was born to do. He made a mistake & suffered greatly for it and ask for forgiveness. Time to Move On. We must be willing to forgive others in life. Can’t Wait for his Triumphant return to the catwalks, to the boutiques, the ballrooms. Viva Le Galliano

  11. Sure!!!he is an artist! We miss him on all fashion shows. He is the best fashion designer!! I am surprised how the media is so quit about him. No articles, nothing mentioning his name. Are they afraid about it??? He was drunk . Let’s bring he back as a very good designer!!

  12. No never! He’s a genius!

  13. Jim Donahue says:

    In a word…YES.

  14. Nimsy says:

Get over your pseudo politically correct selves. It’s about the work period the end. Whatever this guy does in his personal life is his business. I bet most people in any business are doing way worst things than just saying something probably are doing something atrocious. I can tell this man lives & breathes fashion he is the real deal not some wannabe that comes to NYC to goto FIT cuz they wannabe famous.

  15. Lucie K says:

I do not even understand, why there should be any doubts about his comeback! Fashion world is incomplete without him. He is incerdibly talenetd and there are not many designers out there, who could do what JG can do.
I was very sad about that quick action what Dior house took against JG. One day they were all lying by his feets and next day everyone was turning away from him.
So , please, he should get back without any discussions.

  16. Shannon says:

No he should not come back his comments perpetuate hatred for no reason hitler and his atrocities are never acceptable and it is not a joke innocent people being exterminated because insanity thinks it correct

  17. Nikele says:

Hell yes. The fashion scene is so boring without his lavish shows at Dior and his own line!! Missed him soooooo much!

  18. The Fashion World is empty without his talant.
    Welcome back John Galliano !

  19. A. says:

IN THE NAME OF FASHION, HE MUST RETURN!!!!

  20. Claire Clarke says:

John Galliano is a creative genius of our time. I don’t agree with what he did, but he is/was suffering with an addiction and addictions can bring out the worst in us. Everyone deserves a second chance, as we discover during Kate Mosses addiction issues and look at her now. Bring back Galliano the fashion worked is not the same without him.

  21. Jeff Le MAT says:

I don’t think so, this man is sick of himself, twisted mind and weird even if is a real bright creator. He was just a victim of fashion business.

  22. Victoria says:

No need to Apologize. This guy is a FIGURE.

  23. Rockwife says:

I was a huge fan and majorly inspired by Mr. Galliano. However, think about if this was an anti black/person of color slur? Would one forgive that? Tolerance is the word and if one is gay they should understand that maybe even more. Mr. Galliano has to live with his mistake as does a person who gets drunk and perhaps causes a car accident. It happened and though they may have remorse and regret the damage is already done. It takes only a second to make a wrong move and change our destiny.
